Higgins Reports: VA Inspector General Review of Buffalo VA Underway
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) confirmed that the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Inspector General has initiated a review of the circumstances surrounding the reuse of insulin pens at the VA Western New York Health Center in Buffalo.
The action comes following the Congressman’s request for an investigation in a letter
to VA Inspector General George Opfer sent on January 15, 2013.
The review is in response to the recent discovery that the Buffalo VA has been reusing multi-dose insulin pens, intended for individual patient use, on multiple patients risking cross contamination and potential exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
“It is critical that we get to the bottom of this so we can work urgently to correct the flaws in the system that led to this situation and make changes to ensure nothing like this ever happens again,” said Higgins. “We appreciate the Inspector General’s serious and swift attention to this matter and await the results of his review.”
