Pembroke Basketball Team Rebounds For Breast Cancer
In 2012, the Pembroke High School Girls Basketball Team approached their coach, Mike Wilson, with a request to do what they do best—play basketball. Their idea was to organize a fundraising game to benefit Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s (RPCI) breast cancer center. Ultimately, with the support of Wilson, Pembroke High School Officials and a number of generous Western New York (WNY) merchants, the rural high school girls’ team played a special Shooting For A Cure game that raised $4000 for their selfless cause Thursday, January 24 at 7 pm, Coach Wilson and his Pembroke Girls Team will once again take to the court for a second, Shooting for A Cure/ RPCI benefit. The game will be played at Pembroke High School against the Holley High School Girls Team. According to Wilson, his team has a new goal with a continued purpose.
“We hope to raise $5,000 this year and we plan on continuing Shooting For A Cure to raise more money in the future,” Wilson said. “So many people in our school and within the Pembroke Community have been touched by breast cancer, it’s become overwhelming. That’s why it’s become important to our team to get involved and make a difference. We are definitely dedicated to helping Roswell find a cure.”
As with the first Shooting For A Cure fundraiser, a lineup of WNY merchants and individuals are generously supporting the cause. Donors include: The Buffalo Bisons (Buster Bison), Impressive Marks (pink team uniforms shirts, laces, socks and wristbands), Matt Steinberg (design game posters and programs) D & D Printing (posters and programs), Michael Moran/ACCO Brand Products (raffle donation), Toshiba International Corporation (), Alleghany Landscaping (), Next Generation Vending (water refreshments), Pizza Pantry (pizza), Kelsey Fenton (game night photography), aBc Consulting and Services (PR/Media Relations) and Jennifer Wilson (refreshments).
A special half time raffle will also take place with grand prizes generously donated by Bryan Wittman (four pack of Disney Theme Park passes), S&S Limousine (pink limousine rental) and Buttercrumbs Bakery ($100 gift certificate.)
RPCI has officially sanctioned “Shooting For A Cure”. Christopher Musial, Special Events Coordinator at the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, acknowledges the significance of this continuing fundraising effort.
“Roswell Park is excited to once again partner with the Pembroke girls basketball team as they raise critically needed funds for breast cancer research,” Musial said. “Under the leadership of Coach Mike Wilson, and with the tremendous support from the Pembroke Community, Shooting for a Cure provides hope to so many in our community currently in the fight of their lives. We are truly appreciative of Mike and his team for their dedicated efforts supporting our mission: to understand, prevent, and cure cancer.”
Admission to the game is $1 for adults, fifty cents for children and students under the age of 18.
