Rick Martin Open Thread: Panthers at Sabres

Too bad, Key Lime.  But we couldn’t wait around forever.  Paille will likely join the ranks of Steve Bernier, Dainius Zubrus, Mika Noronen, Erik Rasmussen and Taylor Pyatt as players Sabres fans love to trot out as “bad moves” whenever one of those players appears in an NHL highlight, but actually don’t amount to jack shit in the league.

I like the guy, but what I liked more was that Darcy Regier finally made a move.  Heck, I know it was under duress – that he had to find a way to get Adam Mair back onto the roster.  But at least he made a deal instead of juggling players on IR all year.  Paille will fill a short-term gap for the Bruins at left wing, will probably come out all fired up and pile points up like crazy, and will then go back to being Daniel Paille.  An inconsistent winger who fails to play up to his size on many nights.  When he feels like playing, he’s a fine NHL player, and there’s still a chance he could choose to do so and save his career.  So best of luck, Key Lime.  No hard feelings.

The Panthers are tonights opponent, and they have been having a tough go of it early in the year with a 2-4 start.  Granted, it is early, but look at some of the starts these guys have had:

  • Remember when trading Jokinen was no big deal because they had Nathan Horton?  Two goals, no assists, and a minus-six rating.
  • Didn’t LW David Booth sign a big deal for $25.5 million?  One goal, no assists, and a minus-five rating.
  • They signed Dominic Moore.  Watch him bust out with two goals tonight.
  • Also, Bryan McCabe.  Yep, that’s all I need to write.  But I’ll just add he is making $5.75 million per year for the next two years.

Sorry for the brevity, but I’ve been travelling the last three days so that’s why we have the combined preview and open thread.  Hopefully, I’ll be home in time for tonight’s game.  Feel free to help out in comments with the line combinations and any other breaking news.

  1. Key Lime —> Boston Creme. He’s just a different flavor now.

The biggest thing I took out of this is the fact that yesterday was probably the best day ever for Tim Kennedy. He won’t be riding buses around New England anytime soon. Hopefully he was able to get himself some fine South Florida tail to celebrate.

3-1 Sabres. Hecht, Vanek and Rivet (PP).

  2. Wolf says:

The Paille move was a solid one. I’ve got no complaints. I like the way this team is shaping up for the year. Sabres win tonight!

  3. Ben says:

I’m appreciative of any move this organization makes. Securing two draft picks for a guy that spends 20% of the season on the bench works for me!

  4. ToonTom says:

I think it also sends a message to other players: don’t perform and we’ll ship you out. Too bad Darcy hadn’t thought of doing it last year and the year before.

  5. vtTom says:

I hope Danny P gets his game together. We’ve seen him throw his body around, he can impact a game, he just seemed to give up every so often.

  6. Ryan says:

Weak goal and a weak backcheck. Awful penalty. Great start.

  7. Ryan says:

And Pominville decides he can hit the net. Florida actually is as awful as the early record shows. Great pass from Timmy.

  8. Seth says:

    Now that’s a fast start…

  9. Seth says:

Just as the Florida announcers bring up Drury and Briere, Ellis pots it. Note to other opposing announcers – find a new storyline! That’s 3 years old now.

  10. Becky says:

I only went into the other room for 10 minutes and they scored 3 times! Leave again and they score again. Maybe I’ll stay in the other room.

  11. John says:

I don’t mind the 3 year old lines if I can see the opposing feed in HD like this. MSG needs to get their act together with the HD feeds. I have the double whammy of the versus and MSG nonsense.

  12. Ryan says:

    Well that’s an odd goal…

  13. twoeightnine says:

Well people are actively trying to get the Sabres off MSG.

  14. John (JDInVegas) says:

That would be great news 289. First I have heard of that. Thanks for the info.

  15. Sharpie says:

From the score it looks like a great start.

  16. Seth says:

I have the double whammy too John. But even if MSG HD feeds were available, the Sabres still aren’t doing road games in HD. It’s all a friggin’ fiasco. But, the best part of watching the FLA feed is that I thought the intermission host was going to burst into tears at any point during his hosting duties. He seemed just that disappointed in the Panthers’ play.

  17. twoeightnine says:

Not really. It’s isles and bloody rags fans doing it because they’re sick of the Sabres

  18. It all seems like corporate greed to me, which I’m pretty sick of in any context. I actually enjoy the different perspective of the road feeds and am not a big fan of the entire Sabres broadcast crew anyways. But I do love a crystal clear picture.

  19. Cryptkicker says:

Just tuned in, was watching Roy Schieder in 2010 The Year We Make Contact. It was recorded but if there is a movie with him or Sean Connery in it, I’m watching that over anything else. Don’t want to advertise my weirdness but I have a custom made Brass “Monolith” paperweight on my desk.

Florida can’t get any power play going can they?

  20. Ben says:

So, has anyone else noticed our upcoming schedule includes the Lightning, Islanders, and Leafs.

This could turn into one of the best Octobers in Sabres’ recent history…Got to love teeing up the rest of the season like this.

  21. Jack says:

I was very impress on how Tyler Myers played. A rookie at defense and already has 2 goals, and a few assist. If this keeps up he’ll be one of the top defense. I would also like to see how he dose when we play the Boston Bruins. Him and Chara, playing at the same time on ice, like to see how it would turn out.
