Looks like Adam Mair will be likely heading to Portland as he has cleared waivers.
I have to admit to being a bit surprised he made it through, but then again most teams have their fourth-line-guy-who-tries-really-hard-and-makes-750K-per-year-and-likes-to-fight. So, he’s off to Portland.
On thing that waiving Mair accomplished that I failed to consider yesterday was giving the Sabres some flexibility in case of injury. With Mair on the roster an injury to someone on the top-two lines may have led to a lot of line-juggling, with Mair moving to the fourth line, Gaustad moving to the third, and someone else (perhaps Kennedy) moving up. Or, you could stick Mair on the top line (bad idea).
Now, you just call up Gerbe (or whomever – likely Gerbe) and plug him in where he would be able to best utilize his skills, which would be on one of the top forward lines. And you don’t have to risk losing anyone to waivers because Gerbe doesn’t need to clear.
A minor point, to be sure, but one worth noting.
And don’t worry, Mair fans (and I consider myself to be one). We can always check him out on Thursday night when Portland is at the Arena.

Acording to Darcy, Mair may not be sent down. It may be status quo. If Darcy’s comments yesterday can be taken at face value, this looks like it truly was just an attempt to give Mair a shot at more playing time with another team.
Ta-da….

If he’s not going to Portland and it doesn’t give them cap relief, what does this really accomplish? I guess it shows Mair that the team tried to give him an opportunity. Can he ask for his release? He’s not going to get any/much playing time in Buffalo and the rest of the league said “No thanks at that price”… I think there is still more to the story.
My Favorite Mair Moment:
Year: 2007.
April 16th
Playoffs
Game 3 vs. The Islanders
2nd Period, scoreless game.
At this point, the series can still tip back in The Islander’s favor. Buffalo has not looked good early in the playoffs, and they need to keep the pressure on.
Drury streaks down the wing with the puck, puts a perfect pass to the center of the ice. Mair stuck with him the whole time and was right in front of the goalie when the puck came to his stick.
Tip in. The first of what would be three goals in the next seven minutes.
