Random hockey thoughts that can’t wait until tomorrow

Clarke MacArthur is a good guy.  He’s a clean player, and has no reputation as the type who would deliberately try to injure someone.  And his concern for Liam Reddox was evident in the replay.  All that being said, MacArthur should be and will face a fine and suspension for his hit last night, and anyone who suggests differently is a huge homer.  I can’t in good conscience rail against hits like this when one team makes them and ignore them when it’s “my” guy.  Yes, it was a quick play and Reddox turned his back, but you’ve got to be able to pull up there.  Hopefully, MacArthur’s reputation and obvious concern will allow for some leniency.

- All that being said, Pat Quinn is still a douche for saying this:  “Watching it on tape, (MacArthur) knew exactly what he was doing.”  Guess it’s tough to see straight through your vodka-stained tears, eh Pat?  Have another martini, you fat pig.

- That aside, I thought the Sabres played a disinterested game last night, and I sure didn’t want to see that after the two losses over the weekend.  I remain unconvinced.

- If Mike Grier is out for any amount of time I guess keeping Adam Mair in Buffalo was the right call.

- Derek Roy?  Still my least-favorite Sabre.

- I know it’s fun to call the Sabres “cheap” despite the fact they are again spending close to the cap, but the team valuations from Forbes show what a difference small changes in payroll can have on a team’s profitability.  If Buffalo had spent like Carolina or Edmonton last year, they would have made money.  That being said, if they had made the playoffs the loss would likely have been cut by millions.

Thanks for posting the hit, as I didn’t get a chance to see it. No question… MacArthur should be suspended for that hit. That said, I agree, he clearly showed concern for Reddox, and he’s not that kind of player.

And Pat Quinn… what can I say. Clearly, it’s his job to defend his players, but he’s a douchebag who is constantly whining about something. He’s like the Sidney Crosby of coaches. It’s pretty clear that there was no intent to injure on that play. He doesn’t need to fan the flames. (Or, in this case, the Oilers. Get it? Laugh, boy! I made, I said, I made a funny there.)

  2. Clarke? Yeah, he should get a couple games for it. No question.

I see it differently. I think they looked at the schedule, saw that they’re playing two clearly tougher teams this weekend, saw that they were facing a team playing their 3rd in 4, and treated the game accordingly: do enough to win. Would it have been nice to get an easy, dominating 4-1 win? Sure, but I would fear that it would go to their heads had that happened. Plus I have to give a ton of credit to the Oil. They were very quick on their feet and did not look like they played the night before at all.

Hmm….not sure I agree – I think I have seen way more blatant boarding hits. MacArthuer did push him a bit, but to me it looked as if Reddox was already starting to go down. I think of :”head” shots and other boarding hits I’ve seen that were a lot worse. Clarke and Lindy will graciously accept whatever suspension is meted out, but I really do not think there was any intention to hurt this player.

I don’t even see a minor penalty. Reddox lost his edge and fell; MacArthur barely touched him.
