All too often I hear just how awful we Buffalo fans are, and how civilized most other cities fans are.
So it was nice to read an article about the friendly fan in Ottawa who decided to punch a female Sabres fan in the face. Four times.
Now, I’ve read my share of stories about the terrible Buffalo fans, but I don’t recall any that had us beating up the women-folk.
And didn’t the article make it sound like it was a Sens or arena employee?
Thanks to Brian in comments for the heads-up.

As an expatriate Buffalonian- I am always digusted when I hear how Buffalo fans act like jackasses. A year ago I was playing golf with an employee of the Charlotte Checkers who made a point of telling me how obnoxious Sabres fans were during the Carolina series. I told him how disappointed I was to hear that because as a Buffalo sports fan in Dixie I always try to be a good ambassador and have actually been successful in turning people’s attention to Buffalo sports and recently converted people into Sabres fans. I hope Sabres fans will be loud as hell on Saturday…but certainly not violent.
You say it was a Sens employee. Any word on whether or not Chris Neil was involved?
It’s funny, everyone thinks everyone else has bad fans.
Simple truth: Every city has fans that get drunk and act retarded. I don’t care if you live in Buffalo or Edmonton or Ottawa or the Vatican City. It happens, and they don’t represent the rest of us.
I know this isn’t exactly related, but no Zubrus for game 5, if you haven’t seen this already: http://www.wgr550.com/sabres/fullstory.php?id=2399
Bummer, I like him.
Staff or Paille?
jrr1911 – Nu, uh. I didn’t say it was a Sens employee.
I said the article made it sound like it was a Sens employee.
Ben-
I say Stafford…offense, offense, offense. The Sabres may need 15 goals to win on Saturday.
Johnny,
I agree. Staff can play strong on the forecheck also, which is what we need to beat the Sens right now.
Robie was saying on the radio this morning though he wouldn’t be surprised to see Paille come in.
I don’t like losing Zubrus, even if only for his size, but maybe it will actually help them if they all feel like they have to overcompensate for his loss.
And definitely Stafford. And Paetsch.
The sick and twisted side of me almost wants Peters to suit up…he doesn’t even need to step on the ice…I would just love to see Murray’s reaction just knowing he was there.
Paetsch might get the nod for Zubrus to help boost the PP.
There is nothing more messed up than punching a woman, especially one that didn’t instigate the conflict. Those Ottawa assholes should have their balls cut off. Johnny K, I too am a Buffalonian who lives in NC and must put up with crap from Canes fans. They’re always telling me how annoying we are. At least, that’s what they say when they come out of hiding. I haven’t heard from a ‘Cane-iac’ in months. They are so fair-weathered, it’s disgusting. Last year, every damn car in this town had either a hurricanes flag or magnet on it. This year, no flags. No magnets either. The point of this is, we may get annoying at times, but at least we’re loyal, and proud.
come on, there’s no such thing as ‘canes fans’ anymore – they didn’t even make the playoffs.
Can someone clear up to me what a jackass fan is? I went to game 5 in Carolina last year and screamed my f’n head off, respectfully. Does that make me a jackass fan? Cause when I’ve got a loud sens fan behind me i sure think he’s a jackass….. so i guess that makes me agree with Ben in #3. Violence though? christ
Robbie,
If all you’re doing is cheering on your own team, you’re good.
A jackass fan gets too drunk to stand up, picks fights with other people just because they’re rooting for the other team, hurls obscenities at the families in the building, gets kicked out, and trolls forums to post crap like “Teh senatorz are suckee!!1″.
Pretty much, Me.
But the senatorz are suckee!!1.
Just wanted to point out the Sabres have won 4 or more games in a row 5 times this year. It has already happened once this post-season as well.
Hey hey hey.
We only need to win 3 games in a row now. A past win doesn’t affect our chances for future wins, so once they’re in the bag we can cut that list down!
In that case they have 3 or more games in a row 8 times this season
honestly, i kind of like the idea that the sabres have this wild pack of obnoxious fans that patrol the east coast arenas. i know it’s not real PC, but come on…arent you at least secretly a little happy when you read people from columbus or washington or atlanta or florida or carolina or new york or wherever talking about how uncouth buffalo fans are…because we like to drink beer, talk trash, wear out-of-date jerseys and cheer our asses off. sell out your building or we will, ladies!
oh yeah, i say dress stafford. paille and paetsch are way too green for an elimination game, and at least stafford can throw the body around a bit and possibly score, unlike “hands of stone” paille (who i think is gonna be really good next year).
anyhow my theory after game three was this:
1.) win game four by any means neccessary (3-1)
2.) come back to buffalo and just hammer ottawa. i mean, win like 7-1 or 6-0 or something. loud fans, brutal score, maybe a nice-and-legal chris neil-style hit or something on alfie. (3-2)
3.) go back to ottawa, where the fans will already be smelling another meltdown, and let them boo the hell out of the home team when buffalo wins a nice 4-2 game (with an empty-netter to seal it). create the requisite atmosphere for the choke. (3-3)
4.) come back to buffalo, where the city will be INSANE and people will be looking at drury’s bench towels for signs of miracles, a la shroud of turin. roll the dice and see if we go to the finals.
sorry for this massive post but one more thought – what if the sabres do make it to game 7 and then get jobbed by the refs? hockey riot in the streets, anyone?
Holy Crap!
Awesomeness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaM-igPvhbs
Sabres fans aren’t nearly as bad as some would have you believe. How come you never hear Leafs or Habs fans complain about us? They have been to our arena plenty of times so they have a good idea what we are like. Let’s face it some fanbases are just way too uptight. Hockey fans are supposed to be loud. They are not supposed to throw punches and I rarely hear about Sabres fans going that far.
I’m with BK.
I love the fact we have a loud obnoxious following in other peoples buildings. It adds an element to the game I think pro sports for the most part lacks. I mean, I hate loud, obnoxious Leafs fans coming to Buffalo as much as the next guy, but I also secretly like the fact they exist. It adds energy to the crowd and gives me more reasons to hate different fan bases.
And really as bad any fans are painted in America it doesn’t hold a candle to what goes on around the rest of the world in regards to football hooliganism. Alot of that stuff borderlines on gang warfare so when people get all bent out of shape about rowdy hockey fans I can’t help but laugh.
That being said punching a chick in the face is very not cool and I hope the dude who did it pays the proper legal price.
DGT,
Haha people that think Sabres fans are bad have NEVER been to Europe I guess.
My favorite story is of Sevilla-Betis, which are two football teams in Sevilla where I used to live. I saw one guy wearing Betis colors get the shit beat out of him so bad while about 40 Sevilla fans looked on and cheered. And that happens at least twice a year when they play.
You’ve never seen fan violence until you’ve been to a European Football match.
Or how about the soccer player who was shot and killed in his home country for fucking up? That’s passion. And dedication.
You guys sure this wasn’t Joe Corvo?
Incidents like the sens fan-punching-woman are probably isolated occurrences.
Last year, there was a lot of “talk” about some boisterous rude and violent Sabres fans at the RBC Center for the ECF. I myself had very pleasant experiences with some Buffalonians last May, but others had some not so pleasant dealings. Some (stress SOME) Sabres fans damaged cars in the parking lot. Some others made a deliberate mess of the parking lot. Some others broke the pint glass give-away on the steps of the building, or against cars, etc. For every one of those stories, there’s one about a visiting Sabres fan who got harassed or cussed or punched.
Two things to remember:
(1) Stories about the rudeness and violence of the home team fans toward visiting fans are often exaggerated. That said:
BEveryone from the coaches to the players to the fans to the peanut vendors hates everything about the other team during the playoffs. For most people, it’s a good healthy hate, and they have it in the right frame of reference. Unfortunately, some people forget that this is “fake” hate and they use it as an excuse to be jackasses.
Okay, so here’s a third thing.
Jackasses exist in every neck of the woods.
I’m surprised it took 26 posts to mention Corvo. Pled guilty to misdemeanor assault (punching a woman) and felony assault (kicking the same woman). Lost a 100K judgement in a civil suit last year.
no offense, redandblack, but who the hell thought it was a good idea to give pint glasses — heavy, breakable and easily thrown objects — to hockey fans?
they use plastic bottles for beer, but give out 18,000 potential glass bombs?
hey, i’m not in charge of promos. i’m just a fan. i agree that it was a terrible promo, and it was given out after the game, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s not a good idea.
I hope you got more out of my comment than that.
no, i did. dumb things happen anywhere and is not specific to a fan base or region of the country. i’m just a little surprised anyone would give out pint glasses.
I was at game 1 of the ECF last year and I’m bummed because I never even knew they were handing out pint glasses. I definitely would have tried to snag one of those. I didn’t see anyone breaking them either although I’m sure that happened.
I was at a AC Fiorentina / Lazio match the last year the original ACF existed. It was the last home game of the season and the tifosi were not letting anyone into the stadium. Some how my friends and I got in and were greeted by an empty except for maybe 100 fans and a packed Lazio section. We were still forced to sit in our assigned seats which happened to be 2 sections over from the Lazio cage.
Not even 5 minutes into the game I had a flare land 10 feet in front of me. 10 minutes later, another. Then a few rocks. Some empty beer bottles. More flares. And then the best. A seat. They actually tore the seat off the concrete and then threw it over a 20 foot glass and steel barrier.
Oh yeah, could you imagine having this as the background for your team photo?

I’m jealous you guys got to go see a match live in Europe. I’m stuck settling for Toronto FC but from what I’ve heard, things have gotten pretty crazy in the first 2 home games and TFC supporters are getting a reputation as ‘the crazy MLS fans’ so I guess if I’m stuck with American soccer at least I’ve got that going for me.
Hopefully next year I can save up some coin to go to England and catch a West Ham match (unless they get sued into relegation)
buffalo soccer fans, dont forget to support queen city fc this season…NPSL soccer at the old rockpile on best street. starts june 15. there’s a good article on buffalo rising.
“Buffalo soccer fans.” I wish I would have thought of that example when I was teaching my fourth graders about oxymorons back in the day.
All I came up with was handing them tubes of zit cream and pointing at them and laughing.
hey, they dont need to sell 10,000 tickets a game to be a success. if they can get 800, 900, 1000 people a game at the JBW stadium, i think that would be a pretty nice little building block.
If you come down to Rochester you can watch with 10,000 fans.
Anyone going to the Party in the Plaza?
