According to WGRZ Channel 2, a source has informed them that the Sabres have made a contract offer to Daniel Briere, and that there have been further discussions with Chris Drury.
That’s all we know…have at it!

However this goes, a negative editorial is ready to go at The Buffalo News.
I agree with Jonathan… no matter who goes and who stays, that sniveling (sp?) little worm, Jerry Sullivan will bitch about how something else should have happened instead. If Darcy lets Briere and/or Drury go, Sullivan will bitch about how he didn’t try hard enough to keep them. If Darcy keeps them both, Sullivan will bitch about how much Darcy paid them and how they aren’t worth it. I swear to God, The Sabres could straight up trade Peters for Martin St. Louis tomorrow, and Sullivan would question why they couldn’t get Lecavalier too.
Wrong order, but I suspect Regier knows Drury is looking to move on.
Sullivan may be a sniveling little worm, but he has valid points. A little honesty on the part of the Sabres would be nice here. There is absolutely no reason they had to wait until 3 days before UFA season to make an offer. It appears that they never had any intention of signing these guys, and these offers are pro forma.
How many valuable players in their prime are we going to lose because of this reckless, idiotic, stupid, moronic, imbecilic, retarded and indefensible policy of not negotiating with players before they become free agents?
Then again, I’m sure Darcy knows Briere’s terms as a result of last year’s talks. Maybe he’s given him their best offer knowing Briere will walk and will now concentrate on doing what he can to keep Drury.
That was way too optimistic for a Trevor post, so I’m going to go ahead and stick to my assumption that they’re both gone!
I would hope he realizes he needs to blow Drury away, which isn’t his style at all.
As for Briere, it strikes me that a reasonable offer may just be enough. Of course, reasonable is likely to be five years at $6 million per, but we all have our own definition of reasonable.
Trevor-
I truly can’t believe I’m writing this but I AGREE with your post about Regier knowing Briere’s terms…Thereby giving him some room to negotiate with Drury…or at least let’s hope.
It also could be that there has been some type of negotiating going on all along.
It is so close to the deadline that now is the time to put the pressure on from various camps via leaks, unfounded gossip, posturing, etc.
Take, for instance, a quote from the agent of Zubrus:
“Certainly these things can be done if both sides are motivated. But at this point, we’re anticipating that Dainius will ht the market.”
People – once and for all, Briere and Drury are GONE! If they had any intention of keeping them, they would have been negotiating with them weeks ago, or in January even.
Crap -
When I went to moderate comments I knocked out a couple by mistake. Sorry people, my fault entirely.
I am comfortable with both leaving, to be honest. This team is going to be expensive to keep together.
I do not know who in the administration is involved with these negotiations (any ideas?), but I believe that both Lindy and Darcy are involved and since they both only recently were signed to contract themselves, perhaps their ability to negotiate was restricted until they themselves were signed. Either way, change can be good folks, no doom and gloom necessary yet.
My mom just called to say she heard on the radio that we have reached a Deal with Drury…
SabreMark, it isn’t Darcy’s style to negotiate during the season, thats just the way it is
lulu, you can’t F with mt emotions like that..I’m fairly fragile and unstable.
Is that true? Can we verify this somewhere. I can find no news online about this yet. If thats true that would be awesome.
On the other hand, if we did (or will) indeed retain the services of Drury, I would like to point Darcy to my piece at Sabre Rattling for specifics on how to proceed henceforth.
Not trying to fuck with you Trevor. It is true that my mom called me and said that, and I too am refreshing tsn.com every 2 minutes. I feel a buzz going through my body in anticipation and excitement, but that may just be the four huge cups of coffee I’ve had on an empty stomach this morning.
On wgr550’s web page it says that they’re trying to work out a deal with Drury and offered a contract to Briere yesterday. Nothing about whether either one has been signed.
I have heard nothing to substantiate a Drury signing beyond “they’re talking”
i think there’s a way better shot of briere staying, which i am completely OK with. i think drury is excellent, and would love to have him around, but a six-year, mega-millions deal for a 32-yr old player doesnt seem to fit in here.
…and lets be honest, people, drury doesnt seem like the warmest and most nuturing fellow in the world. Maybe – MAYBE – his style wore thin among the sabres young players. i know we all get gooshy thinking of drury making the locker room man up in the tough times, but that isn’t always the best way to deal with people. as well as drury played in the playoffs, it didnt exactly carry over to the rest of the team…
if we keep briere and drury goes his own way, it could be positive in the long run. you take away drury and maybe that allows briere and some of the younger guys to express more of a leadership role and blossom into mature players, rather than relying on drury to be the headmaster.
that being said, if drury resigns, i will be elated.
I guess I’d rather have Briere if Drury leaves, but I’d almost prefer losing Briere too if we lose Drury – as long as Regier goes out and signs a couple power forwards in the mold of Dustin Penner and a blueliner like Hannan or Weber.
I just don’t want to keep both, because then we all might as well just move to Tampa Bay where the weather’s nicer after we’ve gutted the team to keep two centers.
Andrew, it is a statement of fact that Darcy doesn’t negotiate during the season, but it’s not a justification. Why wait until you have to pay a premium for a player? Players are always weary of a career threatening injury, and if they like where they’re playing, they are usually willing to play for less for a long term contract. Darcy has never figured this out.
bk, that’s an interesting point about Drury’s leadership style maybe not being right for this particular bunch of guys. I don’t really have anything to add to it but there was clearly some kind of disconnect in getting everyone on the same page during the postseason. Maybe his more abrasive, no b.s. style ended up putting more pressure on the younguns than they were already feeling? I dunno.
My deepest apologies to Trevor and all for my pre-mature suggestion regarding Drury signing. After crazed internet and radio surfing I have come to realize that my mom misinterpretted the radio announcement. Grrrr. If there is ever an appropriate time to curse your mother, that time has come. Again, so sorry!
lulu, no worries..given that there were no supporting reports, I suspect we all just assumed your mom heard what she wanted to hear. Happens to the best of us!
That said, let’s not go getting our hopes up here. Obviously WGR is going to report the Sabres are “trying to sign Drury” if they’ve made an offer. But that means little. Though I’d like to see them keep him, I still believe he thinks his on-ice attitude does not jive with Buffalo’s and will look for a change of scenery.
something happened to drury during the last round of the playoffs. he looked tired and beaten during interviews. i think he’s done in b-lo. he can’t carry this team alone and that’s what he did for the majority of the time in the playoffs. i’ll miss him but, the new age nhl.
Briere just rejected the offer

If you’ve crunched the numbers, you have to know that there’s no way that they can resign both of these guys and still have money for Vanek, Mair, Stafford, Miller, Gaustad over the next two years.
It appears that the cap will be about 49 mil. Given that figure, I would like to see a total payroll of about 46.5 or 47. That would keep the team profitable, flexible, and strongly competitive in 2007-2008 (even if not dominant, as we would all like it to be). It would also help guarantee the long-term viability of keeping this roster relatively intact. It would make it rather difficult to resign all of the above players, however.
So: pick a player, either player. Give him 6 or 6.5 and four/five years, and take your chances. Extend Mair and Gaustad, consider extending Miller now, and let Rochester’s recent callups grow into the system.
while HSBC burned, back into the cobblestone district – Darcy played his fiddle
Briere can lick my chocolate salty nuts. Sign Drury and go after Zubaz! Briere got kicked around like a white man at a Digital Underground concert during the playoffs. 15 points during the playoffs. Even I can get my ass kicked and still manage to touch the puck and earn an assist See ya Danny………….5 million a year for the next five years. Hometown discount? What a f ck ng pud.
Worst case scenario someone has to step up. Goose might be ready for a leadership role. Stafford is ready to play full time. We won with alot of guys from Rochester in the lineup last year. Have faith in Darcy. Losing these guys sucks because they said all the right things and made us all believe they were all about team. I would never hold back a person from making the cash, but if winning a cup is as important as they say, don’t you sacrifice a “couple” dollars to make the team around you stronger? This time of the year sucks but brace for a shitty Sabres weekend. At this rate, if we lose these guys, you might as well trade away some dead weight to make more cap room. Sabres fans, The Tums and Pepto are on the top shelf. Have a good weekend! What about Conklin?
Darcy waits until 3 days before UFA season to offer him $5 million/yr!?!?
You are such a fucking snake, Darcy. This is your “Well, we really tried to sign him, but, uh, you know, the, uh, player has a say in where he is going, to, uh, play, so, it didn’t work out…” You knew damn well these guys weren’t coming back all along. You are too much of a snake in the grass to admit it. I have a great idea, Darcy. Why don’t you offer Drury $4 million per year?
for a number of years the sabres were a garage sale team, operating on a garage sale budget. their garage sale GM (hired during those bad days) has shown his true colors – he got his contract extended, he’s set for a few years. mediocre will break even – why roll the dice for better than average? coward!!!!!!!
expect anybody w/ arbitration rights to take the one year deal and catch the 1st thing smokin at the end of next season
F Briere..I definitely believe Darcy knew neither were going to re-sign, but I’d still look for him to put 6m on the table for Drury (which he’ll reject).
It’s pointless to speculate why Regier waits so long, doesn’t negotiate mid-season, etc. But there’s a reason for everything, and I’m sure it’s much more complex than any of us will ever know. So I’ll let him off the hook for the captains. Shit just wasn’t jiving this year even with Briere and Drury on the team.
Darcy’s worth will be proven if he realizes he has to go out and improve the team immediately so we can contend for the next two years with the core intact. That means making moves to get O’Donnell or Hannan and Penner (even if he sends an RFA offer sheet). That means signing Vanek tomorrow to four years. It does not mean waiting for rookies from Roch to fill holes and expect to be a contender. There will be plenty of opps for them to play – some will make the team out of camp – but relying on them from the get-go will be suicide.
Face it, we were screwed when we abandoned the black and red. That’s just the way shit works. You don’t F with that shit when you’re one period from the finals with half your team out. Time for Big D to work the deals and restructure this team to play with some physicality, and for Ruff to start reworking the team philosophy to incorporate desperation and intensity into the game plan every night. He failed in that capacity from the second half of the season on last year.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because I’ve been saying it since January. If Ruff and Regier fail to do make fairly bold changes, we can all expect the same outcomes for the foreseeable future – good teams but no Cup. The good thing is, we can win it all if they recognize what almost everyone else already knows.
And will you fucking sign Mair already!
Easy boys, easy…
You guys are starting to sound like WGR callers.
Trevor, I actually love the way you’re thinking. But we only need one or two character guys – Stafford for a full year will be one of them. I believe in him that much.
And you’re right on with Mair. Just send him a deal for $750,000 this year and $800,000 next year and be done with it.
seems as though Briere would rather make 7 million dollars a year and not make the playoffs playing for the flyers. real character guy…
Yeah Trevor!
By the way, how much of a role do agents play in this? After all, they get a cut, right?
O’Donnell resigned with the Ducks. But, if wishes could come true my feelings wouldn’t be hurt at all if the Sabres added Gomez. I bring up his name based on a recent article by Scott Burnside that suggested he would be interested in going into a more open offensive system. Maybe Darcy can still pull a rabbit from his hat.
It’s outstanding that O’Donnell re-signed with the Ducks because Regier can now go out and trade for him. We wouldn’t have been able to pick him up as a UFA. Whether O’Donnell or someone like Hannan, I think Regier needs to shake up the D and add some size and grit. Soon.
And seriously, don’t be hating on Briere..he will get his 7m somewhere and you and we all would take that. As happy as I was when we got him from Puh-ho-nix, I’m just as happy to see him leave. My hopes all along were to wave bye-bye to little Dan and sign Dru – we’ll most likely lose him too, but all’s not lost as long as Darcy doesn’t sit on his hands and hope the kids from Roch can bail him out.
I’m much more worried about Darcy making the necessary changes to turn the team into a Cup winner than I am two guys signing. We’ll still have the talent without Briere and Drury as long as he makes the right moves in the offseason.
And Becky, agent compensation varies but I’m pretty sure the average is somewhere around 10 percent. So yes, they have a strong interest in ensuring their clients get the highest salary possible – the difference between Briere signing for 5 and 7 million might seem mundane to those of us who can’t even fathom making 100k, but to an agent that’s a difference of at least 200k on one contract.
Trevor-
As far a size on D, which I whole-heartedly agree with – I think that Luke Richardson, Daryl Sydor, and Martin Skoula are some other names that might be out there for the taking. The view has to expand beyond Anaheim.
