A year ago Rick DiPietro and the New York Islanders were skewered when a 15-year, $67.5 million deal was announced.
Are we prepared to call Islanders owner Charles Wang a pioneer?
Um, no.

What? Only 15 years?! Only $68 million?! DiPietro got SCREWED! Sucker.
Did I miss when we all decided these crazy ass long contracts were a good idea?
Ironically, it started with the guy he just bought out, Yashin.
He said wang Beavis…hhhhuuhehehhehuhhehe…
not a pioneer, but 24 at the time of the contract, it would carry dipietro through his age 39 year. im not a huge miller fan, but if the sabres could lock him up now (at 27 next year) with a front-loaded contract for the next decade, i wouldnt feel terrible about it. and im not a huge miller fan.
figure dipietro’s contract is front-loaded (not sure if it is), but it is probably easy to buyout around age 34-35. that is a decade with a goalie who posted a 2.58 GAA last year. dipietro may not be a star, but he could be, and he is locked in at a reasonable rate considering the increasing cap. briere got 52 mil in half the years. i dont agree with the length, but it isnt a terrible idea especially considering a team mainly utilizes only one goalie, in comparison to 3-4 centers.
