Doctor On Everett: “We may be witnessing a minor miracle.”

Thanks to some commenters, we note this bit of good news from an MSNBC article:

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Kevin Everett voluntarily moved his arms and legs on Tuesday when partially awakened, prompting a neurosurgeon to say the Buffalo Bills’ tight end would walk again — contrary to the grim prognosis given a day before.

“Based on our experience, the fact that he’s moving so well, so early after such a catastrophic injury means he will walk again,” said Dr. Barth Green, chairman of the department of neurological surgery at the University of Miami school of medicine.

“It’s totally spectacular, totally unexpected,” Green told The Associated Press by telephone from Miami.

That’s awesome news!! Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

  2. TreyPutt says:

This oddly feels like an episode of “House”

  3. Dave S. says:

“Green said the key was the quick action taken by Cappuccino to run an ice-cold saline solution through Everett’s system that put the player in a hypothermic state. Doctors at the Miami Project have demonstrated in their laboratories that such action significantly decreases the damage to the spinal cord due to swelling and movement.”

Tell me again how we should adopt the health-care systems of Canada and Europe?

Not that it’s important in the big scheme, but the Pittsburgh game is looking much more hopeful now.

  4. Adam says:

Looks like some of our prayers have been answered…thank God.

  5. Kate says:

Wait. They don’t have ice-cold saline solution in Canada and Europe?

    This is such wonderful news.

  6. SabreMark says:

Not to get too far off the beaten path, but exactly how many medical or pharmaceutical innovations are done in Canada or Europe these days?

Finally some positive news about Everett.

  7. Dave S. says:

“Wait. They don’t have ice-cold saline solution in Canada and Europe?”

Yes, and now we’ve shown them how to use it to prevent paralysis. It’s not just a refreshing contact lens rinser anymore, Pierre!

  8. twoeightnine says:

They don’t have ice-cold saline solution in Canada and Europe?

They do but it’s called Saline Ice and packs twice the alcohol content.

  9. Kate says:

Even the most fabulous medical innovations are useless if you don’t have access to them. It sounds like Everett was extremely fortunate to have received such stellar medical care in the immediate aftermath of his injury. I doubt that the average American, Canadian, or European would be so “lucky” as to have top notch medical professionals standing by at the scene of an accident. Let’s just be thankful Everett got the care he needed.

Oh, and in Canada, the legal age for Saline Ice is 19.

  10. Dave S. says:

You’re right. If only 85% of the population has private access to the best medical care in the world, and another whatever-percent is covered by Medicaid, the only fair thing is to give 100% of the population access to lesser care. Of course, that will pose a problem to Canadian comedians who need their diseased nuts lopped off in Atlanta, or Canadian mothers who have to fly 300 miles to a podunk American border town to drop her quints, but omelettes & eggs, right?

To paraphrase Winston Churchill on Communism, “The chief virtue of socialized medicine is the equitable distribution of misery.” But that’s the last I’ll post on it, since it seems to be inevitable, so most of us will live long enough to be killed by it.

  11. Seth says:

Holy shit, do we need to politicize this amazing news?

Take your freakin’ agenda to the anti-Michael Moore blog and enjoy this miracle.

  12. Kate says:

You’re totally right, Seth. Thank you!

  13. LC Scotty says:

    “Barth Green”?!?!

I find your lack of faith…disturbing.

  14. If you really want to get into a social medicine argument, I’d start by questioning if Kevin Everett got the same level of care as someone who suffers that kind of injury without insurance. Is an NFL player going to get the same level of care as a poor, uninsured high school football player? Somehow I’m betting recovery rates from something like this is a hell of a lot higher among the rich then the poor.

But hey, trying to make a political point by using a guy who may never walk again before he’s even left the hospital….classy. It’s absolutely fantastic to hear this news and I hope Everett has a complete recovery but to give the credit to the US health system and imply those ‘commies’ who have the nerve to want health coverage would have caused a different result is absolutely insane.

  15. Kevin says:

Er, I think we have proven this point many times before:

BfloBlog and politics do not mix. Except for ragging on Hillary, but that goes without saying…

  16. Mark M. says:

Actually, I believe that Europe is far ahead of the U.S. in terms of medical advances. Most times, the U.S. healthcare industry will adopt the practices of European countries several years later.

    The U.S. needs socialized medicine.

What about gay, I mean “straight” politicians? Someone’s wide stance keeps on encroaching on my posts.

  18. chris says:

    that’s awesome news…

  19. FC says:

As a drunken Canadian who was at the game and couldn’t believe what he was seeing let me just say who gives a fuck wether Kevin’s medical care was socialized or not. It’s the freakin doctors I want to give the big up’s to. Whatever, or whoever is paying them, well man it ain’t enough. All of them, from the onfield guys who saved his life to the nurses changing his IV, deserve a medal. The more I read about them the more I am blown away. They can come drink at my tailgate for free any time.

  20. SabreMark says:

You leftists are awesome. You criticize making a political point about Everett, while making a political point about Everett. Wow.

The US needs socialized medicine? You think healthcare is expensive now? Wait until it is free!

  21. Jack says:

SabreMark, this is not Freerepublic.com. If you want to engage in name calling and blanket statements, please direct them towards the cheating Patriots, the child-molesting Dolphins, or that traitorous bastard Chris Drury. Otherwise, give it a rest.

  22. SabreMark says:

I wasn’t namecalling. Would these people here who are clamoring for socialism deny that they are leftists?

  23. ranger1100ky says:

    Well hot damn!!

This is simply great news! Down here in Bengal-land I’ve been watching for news on Kevin Everett, and am tickled to death that things seem to be looking up for him.

I don’t give a damn about politics at this point… that’s a war to be taken up in the polls via our votes… (y’all remember how to VOTE right?)

The simple fact is… a guy who might have been 50/50 to even LIVE, now seems to have a chance to exit football and be able to WALK into the stadium in his retirement, rather than being wheeled in, or worse, being honored posthumously.

Here’s wishing Kevin Everett the greatest possible recovery, and God’s strength and comfort to him and his family, in what are sure to be some very trying days ahead.
