Game Fifty-Four "All-Day" Open Thread: Bruins at Sabres

This is the one where Kevin is busy, so I leave it up to the readers to do my work, if you’re in the mood.

This one can move the Sabres into a tie for eight place in the Conference with the Bruins, and continue a fantastic run that has seen them earn 11 of the past 12 available points. In addition to gaining on Boston, they are also just three points behind the Rangers with four games in hand.

I think the crowd, along with the team, is going to be energized tonight. Now that the Sabres have sufficiently lowered our expectations I think the crowd noise and enthusiasm is going to go back up.

7:30 start tonight, on MSG and Sabres HD.

There is no doubt in my mind this game was fixed. No team can play that careless, mindless, and inept for an entire period at home and not be trying to lose. One stinking, weak shot on goal from 35 feet in the final period against the worst goalie in the NHL.

At least 4-5 times in the 3rd period players held the puck and passed up shots in the slot, and from the dots, for harmless shots from the goal line that had a 1% chance of scoring. That tells me they didn’t want to score or win.

No one, absolutely no one, in front of the net for the whole period to take a pass out of the corner. It seemed like they played the whole period with 2 forwards — one in the corner and the other hiding (as always) behind the net.
Where was the other forward? He wasn’t at the blue line to keep the puck in; not at center ice, retreating with our cowardly D.

But the biggest suspect was Campbell, or should I say maitre d’ Campbell, the way he politely let Savard go by him with not so much as a swish of his purse. Oh, he had one hit and one flashy rush that, as usual, amounted to nothing. Otherwise he gave the puck away like it was a free sample. Please, Darcy, put him on the first bus out of town. He’s not worth 60 cents, much less $6 million. Did everyone see that fancy move when Kobasew came around the back of the net? Campbell turned AWAY from him with some half-assed sweep-check. Where was the big hit then, when it would have done some good?

I’m sorry, but I don’t accept the excuse that they were tired. These guys are in the prime of their lives and they’re supposed to be in top condition. Playing hockey is their job, it’s what they’re paid to do. Saying they’re tired is not an option. As far as I’m concerned, this game was thrown, plain and simple. There is no other rational, logical explanation. They dumped this game.
