There really is nothing that quite compares to listening to the “three stars” of a hockey game in Montreal, especially when they introduce “le troisième etolie – de turd star” (say it with a heavy French accent, it’s quite funny). So in honor honour of our new frenchie, I thought I would pay Steve Bernier his due in the title of the post.
What can you say about a game that has Andrew Peters as the hero? Orifices were tightening when Nashville cut what was a 3-0 Buffalo lead to 3-2 just minutes in to the second period. Then Andrew Peters – yes, that Andrew Peters – took a pass from behind the net from The Kaleta! and one-timed it home to give the Sabres some breathing room and relax a team that was still reeling from a Philadelphia comeback win just a couple nights ago.
I think Dave summed up Buffalo’s collective feeling on Steve Bernier’s debut below, as he continued a solid tradition of guys who impress in their debuts as Sabres. Let’s hope it continues.
As someone who was impressed with what Nashville had done in overcoming adversity to contend in the West, I thought they played like a bunch of pussies last night. Cheap shots and bullshit abounded and, Adam Mair getting pounded aside, the Sabres answered and then some. Scott Nichol is still a cheapshotting douchebag, but karma caught up to him and his Predators last night. It certainly made for an intense and fun night at the Arena, and I was pleased by the number of people who stuck around (yes, I stayed) just to see Bernier introduced as the first star. Welcome to Hockeytown, Steve. It may be a bit more intense than in San Jose, but then again just imagine Nashville coming out onto the ice last night and seeing actual people in the stands instead of empty seats.
It’s a big night for scoreboard watchers tonight, as Pittsburgh is in Boston, the Rangers are in Carolina, Philly hosts Ottawa, and the Islanders are in Atlanta. Next up for our boys are the Canadiens on Friday night in HSBC.
And light a candle for poor Drew Stafford, who may never get his spot back on Roy and Vanek’s line after last night.

Danny Briere had 2 goals in his debut w/the Flyers, including the game winner on the road
just sayin …
“There really is nothing that quite compares to listening to the “three stars†of a hockey game in Montreal”
Other than the game itself. I went to the “Centre Bell” last season for a game…..absolutely incredible, the whole experience.
Did Danny Briere stick up for Riley Cote in his debut and level a cheap-shot prick?
One of the most enjoyable games I’ve attended. Bernier potting 2 goals in the first? Magic.
Loved how he basically gave himself an assist on his 2nd goal by strong arming his way to the puck and kicking it out to the boards for Lydman to set him up.

Yeah, but he’s also making $10 million dollars this year- he better freaking score some goals. We got this kid of for the low low price of one can of soup. Granted, it was pretty good soup, but still.
Steve should be equally energized tomorrow night playing against division foe, Les Habitants. No doubt he grew up watching, emulating and idolizing some of them. Every game in a division that includes the Habs, Sens, Leafs and Bruins should be enough to light the competitive fire in him. Bienvenue to the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference, Stephane!
Allez, Beau Fleuve!
Steve said he was a Nordiques fan growing up, I’m sure he’s got some hatred for Montreal.
Wasn’t sure if the Nordiques were still around when he was a young ‘un. He must have hated us then too! (or liked us, since we always folded in the playoffs to Les Nordiques).
Anyone else notice that campbell is featured prominently in the Bflo News Sabres pin promos?
Do they intend to keep it that way?
(no biggie to me, we can’t get ‘em down here)
Drew might not get his first line spot back, but he’ll make the 2nd line that much stronger!
Looking for Steve’s nickname…how about “baby bear”?
Listening to last night’s game and thinking of who and who’s not there. I suddenly feel we’re very deep at forward again. Not experienced but deep.
Another trade pays off for Regier!
Jochen Hecht skated by himself for about 30 minutes and attempted to practice with his teammates before leaving about 15 minutes into today’s workout with the Buffalo Sabres. Hecht has been battling a pulled groin muscle that will prevent him from playing Friday against the Montreal Canadiens.
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said wingers Maxim Afinogenov and Drew Stafford have been cleared to play against the Habs, but that didn’t mean they would. Ruff was leaning toward sticking with the same lineup that carried the Sabres to an 8-4 victory over the Nashville Predators on Wednesday.
“You go to war like that and play the game the way you did, it’s not easy taking anybody out,” Ruff said. “I don’t believe it’s sending the right message.”

A-fucking-men on the bottom quote. How can you change this lineup right now?
Although I would like to see MacArthur ride the pine pony. He’s been next to useless and somehow still seeing regular PP time.
Yeah, and even with a goal last night (and an important, momentum shifting goal at that) I still have no use for Peters in the lineup. Especially since Kaleta has now demonstrated an ability (but not necessarily a propensity) to drop the gloves.
baby bear? oh lord. how about steve mothereffing bernier? i dont think bernier fits the “cute snd cuddly” image of some of our sabres.
The puck bunnies out in San Jose called him Big Bear. I just like Bernie. Reminds me of the guy down the street who’ll fix anything for you, a low-key do it all guy.
I don’t know Seth. I like Peters on the fourth line. That Mair-Peters-Kaleta combo is like a buzz saw out there – hitting everything that moves.
I say let the top-3 lines do the scoring, and let that 4 line punish the opposition in to submission. I mean, christ!, did you see that ass kickin’ Mair handed out last night.
Seriously, though, Peters serves a purpose out there sometimes. Even though, he’s dumb and clumsy with the puck, he adds a lot of energy and can provide one of those momentum shifting shifts that we saw last night.
To twoeightnine:
>> The puck bunnies out in San Jose called him Big Bear.
So did his teammates. You calling them puck bunnies, too?
Sure, why not.
He was on a team that wore teal. Tell me that doesn’t affect your mind. So yes, they were all puck bunnies out there.
I found myself naturally saying ‘Bernie’ last night so that’s my vote. It sounds like the hockey progression of his name.
When is the last time we had a Steve on the team anyway?
Steve Shields?
Steve Begin was on the team during training camp a few years ago, but MTL plucked him off waivers.
And wasn’t Steve Reinprecht involved in some kind of Sabres’ trade? Was he acquired, got hurt, and then traded away? I could just be imagining this…
Aha! Reinprecht was traded for Drury and Begin in the summer of 2003. Buffalo got Reinprecht from Colorado for Keith Ballard. It must have been that same summer, b/c I don’t think Reinprecht ever played a game for BUF.
Reinprecht was traded with Rhett Warrener for Drury and Begin. Looks like it was essentially a 3-way trade with COL, as everything went down on the same day.
I’m sorry, I think it’s a big mistake to play Andrew Peters EVER, especially when you have Stafford, or to a lesser extent, Max available.
All those boners we still have from Wednesday will be gone in big hurry if Mo-ray-all puts up two in the first ten minutes.
Let’s be happy there’s a lot of chemistry minue alter boy Brian Campbell and at least put our best friggin’ skaters out there.
Wow. Trever is psychic.
