Sabres Sign Winger

I know it’s been written about elsewhere, but I hadn’t heard anything official and was hesitant to post it. However, I just received the press release that states the Sabres have signed LW Mathieu Darche.

BUFFALO, NY (July 24, 2008) – Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier today announced the Sabres have signed unrestricted free agent LW Mathieu Darche.

Darche (11/26/1976, 6’1”, 217 lbs.) spent the 2007-08 season with Tampa Bay, recording a career-high 22 points (7+15) in 73 games. He also picked up 10 points (3+7) in four games with Norfolk (AHL). Darche has 24 points (8+16) in 101 career NHL games with Columbus, Nashville, San Jose and Tampa Bay.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, the 31-year-old Darche has 352 points (165+187) in 440 AHL games since signing as an undrafted free agent with Columbus on May 16, 2000. He has five AHL seasons of 20 or more goals, including two when he topped the 30-goal plateau. In 2006-07 with Worcester, Darche posted career-highs in goals (35), assists (45) and points (80).

Darche played four seasons (1996-2000) of Canadian university hockey with the McGill Redmen, scoring 130 points (60+70) in 90 games. He is one of just 98 players from the Canadian university system who have gone on to play in the NHL. Darche’s older brother, J.P., is a long snapper with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs

I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s a two-way contract meant to provide depth for the Portland organization.

I’m glad I waited to get one of the (no longer) new Sabres jerseys. As soon as the Sabres assign a number to him I’m ordering a custom Darchebag jersey on NHL.com – cuz I’m classy like that. I might even make a Darchebag sign for the first pre-season game. I wonder where my markers and glitter are…

It’s definitely a two way contract. I forgot where I read it first. I’m surprised that TB didn’t re-sign him, they’re low on forwards.

    Were Slaughter and Cinderella unavailable?

    zibby wins

  5. TheTick says:

289, the league only allows you to have a certain number of players under contract, so eventually they HAD to stop signing forwards.

  6. PA Pete says:

Knowing Tampa Bay, they’re likely to hold a news conference by the weekend announcing trades for 4-5 new forwards.

I dont think they’ve let a week go by this summer w/o some kind of a press conference.

  7. Eric says:

Speaking of Tampa Bay, Randy Cunneyworth is their new assistant coach.

  8. Eric says:

NM, it is to Atlanta. Still, too bad.

  9. jan says:

Darche will be eating lobster in Portland and hopefully teaching the young guys how to play hockey. I doubt you’ll see him in Buffalo unless the injury bug really hits — they’ll bring up their younger players before him if possible. I’m glad Cunneyworth got his chance at the NHL — he did a great job getting the current Sabres players ready for the NHL when they played in Rochester.

Does Atlanta really count as the NHL?

Winger could kick Cinderellas and Slaughters asses both at once.
