So, Now What?

Sometimes it is very difficult to be a fan of the Buffalo Bills.

Actually, make that “for the last decade, it has been hard to be a fan of the Buffalo Bills.”

It could be the beer talking, or the bitter chill from 32-degree temperatures and freezing rain, or just the frustration of watching a complete abortion of an offense, but right now I could not care less if I ever attend another Buffalo Bills game.

Oh, sure, I’ll keep my tickets. Someone has to provide the numbers for when they attempt to move the team to LA – it’s a cross I will choose to bear. But honest to God, I can’t think of one redeeming reason to attend a game on a day like today. I can handle losing when it’s 75 and sunny, but 34 and wet? No, screw that.

I’ve had seasons for nine straight years now, working my way towards the sweet seats after starting in the end zone. In all those years, the Bills haven’t sniffed the playoffs, and now I have to ask why the hell I do this year after year. Am I turning into the fair-weather fan I mocked for the last decade? Is there any hope this team will ever again make it worth the effort, the time away from family, the bone-chilling cold, and the thrill of waiting 20 minutes to piss?

Of course they will. Or maybe they won’t. All I know is I’ve got two available for the Patriots game.

    Kevin,

I’ll take those two tickets. My nephew is old enough to see an NFL game, and I’d like him to experience it once before “our” team leaves for Toronto or LA (see what kind of fans you get there).

I’ve had seasons off and on since the glory days…actually, the first time was 1989…remember Art Still and Rob Riddick (not the chronicles of).

The last game I attended was that freezing rain, sleet, raian wind-tunnel of a game vs. the Giants last season.

Have been there in good times and in bad, and gotten sun-burned, and frozen cold…(ok, yes, and a bit buzzed too). I feel qualified in my opinion that you aren’t a fair weather fan.

Consider, the last time we saw playoff football was a game that ended with the infamous (since it was an illegal forward pass) “home run throw back”.

So, if you’ve had it, you are justified!

OK, now one more rant: Ralph Wilson is a selfish MF. Consider, that owners always lament the lack of any loyalty in this age of free agency. A player making 3 or 4 million a year leaves his adoring fans since some other organization offers a bit more cash….that has been his complaint, his excuse for planned mediocrity (remember “cash to cap”…they don’t talk about it, but it is still the plan).

So, why hasn’t our beloved owner made plans for the inevitable? Why not sell to Golisano, or Kelly’s group..or talk to Senator Schumer or the governor?? Well, I’ll tell you why! He’s the biggest freaking free agent of them all (and a hypocrite too)….he could sell to people that would guarantee the Bills remain here, but he can make more money for his inbred progeny having his estate sell to the highest bidder once he kicks off.

The heck with one bad game, or a bad season, or a decade of futility. The owner of this team is a selfish bastard.

My friend called me a pussy last night for not wanting to go today. He spent 5 hours on a bus getting back from the abortion. I cooked myself a pizza, enjoyed a microbrew and got some work done.

Yeah, Kevin, I’m done. The game itself isn’t even much fun for me anymore; I don’t even enjoy watching good games between other (better) teams that much these days. But the Bills are just depressing. I can accept that they had to rebuild after the disaster that was the Donahoe era, but in today’s NFL, there’s NO reason why “rebuilding” still has to take four or five years, like it did pre-free agency. The Bills are looking up at a team that went 1-15 a year ago. In the span of years since the Bills last made the playoffs, compare their results with the New York Giants: a Super Bowl appearance in 2000, then a playoff appearance in 2002 followed by TWO years (not eight) of rebuilding, leading to more playoff appearances starting in 2006 and culminating in a Super Bowl title. Our team? The best they could muster was a single 9-7 year in that entire span.

I don’t really want to think anymore as to what’s gone wrong — poor personnel decisions (some of which aren’t always avoidable), sloppy decisions by the coaching staff, a general cheap approach by Mr. Wilson, a general hex on the entire Buffalo sporting world, who knows. I just want to enjoy Sunday afternoons, and if that means watching a movie or going out with the kid instead of watching this damn game anymore, hey, great.

    Thanks for the memories, Bills.

This is one of my favorite sites, first of all.

Being an old, fair weather fan from erie, pa, I’ve learned to taking an interest in the bills mainly because they always seemed to have a fair amount of quality players and some sense of toughness, whether it was in the offensive linemen or the QB, someone who stood out as a leader.

If you have enough people like that (OLD SCHOOL MENTALITY&TOUGHNESS), one can justify watching and rooting.

I firmly believe that this era is gone. If an NFL team plays their games outdoors, they should consider building a dome. Furthermore, the NFL should require domes in all Northern Cities’ teams.

When I heard one of the announcers say that the Bills practice indoors and they don’t have the advantage of bad weather on game day, I rest my case.

I feel the same way Kevin. I love my Bills more than anything else. But it is becoming physically painful to see them piss away every opportunity for the playoffs. Where you and I differ is I live too far away to attend in person and have to get the NFL package to even see them on tv. Thankfully, the dedication and determination to sit in the freezing rain hasn’t been asked of me yet. Until they decide that winning is a good thing and they want to try it, then I might offer my physical dedication.

I’ve found that I can’t even watch an NFL game if the Bills aren’t involved. And now this. I hadn’t read the Sunday paper yet, so I was reading it while the game was going on ready to rewind the DVR if something happened. Nothing happened. I spent the first half reading the paper and the second half wishing I had something better to do.

I think I’m going to try harder to find something better to do on Sunday afternoons.
