Ted Rogers Dies

Ted Rogers, the founder of Rogers Communications and one of the driving forces behind the “Bills in Toronto” series passed away yesterday.

Known around these parts as a nickname that was less kind than should be used to reference a dead guy, I hope it’s standing room only out to Queen Street for his funeral.

Just to be clear, the Bills only “home” game that isn’t sold out this year is the one this Sunday against Miami. In Toronto. Rumor is, there’s one more seat available now.

How much do you think they’d want for that seat? $30? $40 thousand?

I’m sorry for his family and they have my respects.

Inevitably, and unless he is blessed by unnatural long life, Mr. Wilson will be generating similar headlines all too soon.

When he does, it will be a double funeral: one for Mr. Wilson, and one for the NFL in Buffalo.

Be it Toronto or LA the team will be sold to the highest bidder. Mr. Wilson and other owners decry the lack of loyalty from players in this age of free agency. They bolt for the team that offers the richest contract. Well, from a fan’s standpoint, Mr. Wilson’s own behavior over the years makes him a hypocrite.

He could sell to an ownership group from this area committed to keeping the Bills here. But, he’d be taking less money than he’d be offered from Toronto or maybe LA. No loyalty from owners to their fans I guess.

Instead, we get the Bills in Toronto series. If the NFL wants football in Toronto, I’ve one word: Expansion! Then everyone wins, with a new NFL rivalry between Buffalo and T.O. I can assure you, that based on conversations I’ve had with other fans, and from my own opinion, if the Bills move permanently to Toronto, the NFL will lose it’s rabid NFL fan base. I won’t watch the NFL, I’ll stick to college ball. So, stop dreaming that we in WNY will be fooled into following the T.O. Bills. Also, the fan base there will be non-existent every October once the NHL starts. Canada is hockey crazy, not fanatic for NFL football. Those few that are already make the trip to the Ralph.

Mr. Wilson and the League are making a big mistake if their ultimate goal is to move this franchise!

  3. So add another name to the list of people who died waiting for Ralph Wilson to sell the team…

  4. jan says:

my condolences to his family. he couldn’t hang on long enough to see the game?

  5. Chris Smith says:

The NFL will never put a team in LA. The people there don’t really care, ownership prospects are tenuous and most importantly, the city serves as a convenient bogeyman whenever a team needs to hold their municipality hostage. Would the Bengals have a new stadium if there wasn’t a threatened move to LA?

  6. Ryan says:

I’m sure the wake will have some good seats available, but once the funeral starts sales will pick right up…

  7. twoeightnine says:

    +78 million Ryan.

  8. LA would get a franchise if there was a municipality or private entity willing to put up the dough to build a stadium. Through the years, there have probably been as many Socal NFL stadium plans as Buffalo waterfront plans. Similarity being that none have ever come to fruition.

Sure seems to be a bitch to get an NFL palace built in California…just look at the old school venues of Oakland, San Fran, and San Diego…all 60’s era buildings with no real plans to be replaced anytime soon.

  9. twoeightnine says:

San Diego or Oakland will be in LA well before the Bills.

  10. Ben says:

    Avery suspended (yay!)

    Anyone get the actual quote?

  11. Chris Smith says:

    @Ben:

“I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada,” Avery said on camera this morning in Calgary. “I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. Enjoy the game tonight.”

  12. Ben says:

Okay, he called her ’sloppy seconds’. That’s just awesome.

I hated the suspension originally (and I think Avery is the scum of the NHL) but after seeing that I’m fine with it. I didn’t realize he asked for a camera and came out saying it like he was this bad ass mofo who is the king of comedy. I thought someone asked him a question.

  14. janice says:

You people should all be ashamed of yourselves. someone has loss a love one and all you care about is a football team. look at the players. the Bills number one player can get drunk and run someone over and leave them to die. wake up people!

  15. PA Pete says:

Check out this AM’s Deadspin posting on Derek Roy

No wonder the Sabs are losing

WTF is going on in that dressing room??!!!???

  16. Brian says:

    From TBN:
…Ruff also weighed in on the suspension of Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery, who was banished by the NHL for his inappropriate comments about his ex-girlfriends Tuesday morning in Calgary.

“Just looking at it from the outside, that was embarrassing for the league and I thought the league did the right thing in dealing with it,” Ruff said. “We always talk to our players about how much pride they have to take in representing the Buffalo Sabres, the organization and themselves. I do it every year at the start of training camp … We’re in a unique situation here in that we’re a lot closer to our fans than in a lot of cities. I want our fans and our young followers to be proud of the way our players handle themselves.”

I somehow doubt that Lindy saw the Deadspin photo before making the above statement. Those photos show exactly how our players “handle themselves”. See what I did there?

  17. Matt S. says:

    In worse news….

“Lydman, who was struck by a shot in Monday’s loss to Nashville, was unable to take part in practice today in HSBC Arena before the team flew to Fort Lauderdale. Captain Craig Rivet remains questionable with an upper-body ailment suffered Saturday in Montreal.”

Okay, so that means Weber!!! Oh, wait…..

“Mike Weber would be first in line to get called up but Ruff said he’s been having unspecified medical issues there as well.”

    Kill me now.

  18. Jonathan says:

Technically Derek isn’t handling himself, Clarke is handling him. So thats ok.
