Sabres Hypothetical

Imagine this: The Sabres, with the best team in the NHL in 2005-06, win game 7 against the Carolina Hurricanes and go on to beat the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Question: Do the Sabres replace the Angry Goat Head with the Slug? OR do we keep the AGH in perpetuity?

  1. Matt S. says:

Of course they go to the Slug.

You’d really think this management would pass up a money-making oppotunity? Hell, they’d make even MORE money doing so under this hypothetical.

  2. Nicole M says:

they might make money then again they might not make money.

  3. Ed says:

I actually liked the goat head. The original logo is the best… of course, but the goat wasn’t that bad. The colors were good too. The slug DEFINITELY has to go bye-bye!!!

  4. Caps says:

Didn’t mind the goathead, but hated the red and white. But winning makes anything look good.

I think if we win, we still switch. Big marketing changes like a new brand identity are planned and tested in advance and probably grind on regardless of wins and losses, I bet.

  5. Drew says:

    That post was cruel.

  6. Becky says:

The AGH had to go in the minds of new ownership – it’s a symbol of the Rigas reign.

  7. Chris says:

@1 – I can’t fault our organization for trying to make more money. But your cynicism is frightening to me. Buy a puppy or something.

@6 – Perhaps. But the power of the first Buffalo title in 40 years is a pretty compelling reason to keep the AGH alive. I liked the font in particular. Finally, it’s the most successful jersey we’ve ever had in our franchise history – a Cup final and a conference final…plus a division championship or two. Our best player ever wore and won 2 MVPs and 5 Vezinas in the AGH.

It also would still allow me to let my friends borrow and wear sweet jerseys like this one:

That photo was actually taken at game 1 of the aforementioned Sabres/Canes series.

  8. Milina says:

@8 that guy in the Pommers jersey looks like somone I had a one night stand with in the DC area a couple years back. Is that you Chris?

  9. PA Pete says:

I didn’t know Adam Sandler was a Sabres fan??!

  10. vtTom says:

    I dunno – sounds a little off…
Didn’t Ty Conklin finish out the finals that year, after Rollie The Goalie got hurt?
I don’t ever recall any bflo hockey club, irrespective of logo or colors, being able to beat America’s goalie.

  11. Tara says:

I hooked up with the dude in the Pommers jersey, too. I think. He’s your friend? I got preggers. He was a polite guy, though. Is there a way I can get in touch with him? I like for him to see his baby girl. Maybe more?

  12. Jen says:

    Tramps

  13. aceface says:

You have to give a year’s notice to the league if you are switching jerseys so the decision was set in stone way before the loss to Carolina.

  14. Milina says:

@14 If you got it, why not work it? That dude I was with was good! Scary good!

@15 Is it a year notice or a season notice. That is a big difference.

  15. Chris says:

You people are a trip. It’s clear that for all of us, October 12th can’t come soon enough.

  16. Matt S. says:

aceface – don’t let facts get in the way of our cynicism!

@10 – I think it was Markkanen? I know Conklin was on the roster, but I’m not sure which one was starting after the Roloson injury.

  17. Matt S. says:

    http://www.hockey-reference.com/playoffs/NHL_2006_goalies.html

Yeah, Markkanen was the primary goalie. Conklin got into one game, played six minutes and took the loss.

  18. Steve says:

Roloson got injured in game 1, then Conklin came in and did this, and Markkanen started game 2.

  19. Matt S. says:

That’s right. I remember Conklin’s boner – just forgot that was Game 1.

  20. Matt S. says:

    @ 8, 12, 13, 19, 23, 24, 25…

I guess we can tell school’s out for the summer.

  21. trevor says:

I’m not saying the AGH was necessarily the best uni of alltime, but it’s a fuckload better than what we have now. There’s a certain intimidation value in wearing all black – of course, with all the pantywaists we have now, who the hell knows?

I have no idea where to start looking in comment history, but I thoroughly predicted that abandoning the black and red after a run to the ECF would come back to bite the team in its jinx-ridden ass.

    Check. And mate.

  22. trevor says:

    @25-
I’m game for some insight. Got a question for you: Do the sabres re-sign Andrew Peters?

    a) No.
    b) Jesus Fuck, No!
    c) Are you fucking high?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

  23. Keller says:

7/10/2009 the day I quit being a Sabres fan…not even as my second team. I
refuse to root for a pussy franchise, with pussy players and pussy management. Fuck Off Buffalo Sabres…good fucking riddance PUSSY.

  24. Kevin says:

Not sure where to go with that one…

  25. aceface says:

@23 Big words but if everyone magically matures at once a-la 2005 you’ll come crawling back.

  26. PA Pete says:

    TJ/

Jay McKee inks one=year deal w/Penguins

    /TJ

  27. Milina says:

I think we all agree with the following: @23 has issues and Darcy John Regier dropped the ball not signing Jay McKee.

  28. Becky says:

Ever think that after leaving here with a sky-high contract from the Blues that maybe McKee didn’t relish the thought of crawling back to Buffalo with a has-been contract? The fans would have welcomed him back though.

  29. Becky says:

Besides the fact that the AGH is still being used on the handwritten season ticket deposit receipts, weren’t the masses demanding a return to the blue & gold? Okay, not the slug, but still. The new jersey was a top seller too, so most weren’t that unhappy with it.

Maybe the Sabres could cycle in a nostalgia night with the AGH jersey…never happen.

  30. lulu says:

I am glad we didn’t sign McKee. I am not nearly as disenchanted as Keller. I am interested in learning more about DiPenta. I think Ellis was a good move. I am continuing to support my team with shared season tickets. I still don’t know anything about moving Max, but welcome the change.

Note: this comment is in reference to all the hockey related posts I have read here recently. Cheers!

  31. vtTom says:

Keller @23 – please stop sugar coating the posts, I open the page and it’s all sticky…. ewwwww!

Open up man – tell us how you REALLY feel about the hand-wringing management of the Sabres and their garage sale, coupon clipping, buy one dinner get the second free, coffee club card punching, penny-saver reading mentality.

  32. lulu says:

    Except this one! Ha!

I don’t like the slug or the Angry Goat Head. While the mere fact that we all refer to it as the Angry Goat Head is reason enough to dislike it, as a lifelong fan I am insulted at the league wide attempt to increase jersey sales by capitalizing on the inner city ghetto fashion trends and using only red and black color schemes. I’ll always love the blue and gold.

  33. vtTom says:

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=284470

Free agent swede D-man signed – HOLY SMOKES a signing nearly an hour ago…

Joe Dipenta, former 3rd rounder in FLA – coudn’t crack the panthers ALL STAR line up, maybe I can make it in Bflo

  34. aceface says:

@33 Dude played two full seasons with the Ducks, won the stanley cup and the calder cup. Good depth signing.

  35. Seth says:

@23 Jesus. Of all the shit that has gone down in the past few seasons, not signing McKee is the straw that broke the camel’s back? Enjoy the Blues.

  36. Keller says:

Life is too short to root for hockey teams run by Larry Quinn.

The Jay McKee signing had nothing to do with my outburst…christ, I had enough of his leadfootness last year.

The lack of any positive roster developments with the 2009-10 Buffalo Sabres is heartbreaking. Anyone paying attention would hardly need a recap of the Sabres relative weakening within the Eastern Conference. And Jesus…enough with the Tyler Myers cock worship…he may be the next Chris Pronger, but let’s see how he does against players who are old enough to drink….OK?

The 2009-10 team is not capable of winning a playoff series…even if proven wrong, I can’t see Derek Roy, Pommadoodle, Tim Connolly and our second rate, EuroDisney, backliners grinding out 16 playoff wins. Hope is not a strategy…getting some balls and signing/trading for Chris Pronger or Marian Hossa is.

So the apparent 2009-10 strategy from Mayor Quinnby and Darcy is to look to the future…unfortunatley, we’ve seen this movie before and know how it ends. In 2005 Buffalo had its best chance to win the Cup and they sat on their hands…Darcy froze…made no big trade and the Sabres were left behind the Carolina fucking Hurricanes…who showed some balls and made deals that year.

I’m trying to envision a scenario where Buffalo has a great team in 2011 or 2012 and I either see them getting handled by the Penguins or getting out maneuvered at the trade deadline by another contender…am I wrong? Paging Bob Corkum…paging damaged goods Moore and Zubrus…

I hope and wrong and you Mutts back in Buffalo get to have the biggest, happiest, most passionate Cup parade ever…but this asshole is moving on…life is too short to root for pussy teams.

  37. Matt S. says:

    Bucky, is that you?

  38. PA Pete says:

I see C McArthur is up for arbitration.

    Any predix??

  39. trevor says:

He gets 1.2 mil more a year than he’s worth

  40. Chris says:

What, is he working for Goldman Sachs now?
