Pat Kane: Something doesn’t feel quite right…

Something about Pat Kane beating up a 62-year-old man doesn’t feel quite right.

But regardless of the “feel,” and irrespective of what comes to light that led to the instance, there is no changing the fact that it happened and that what happened is pretty much indefensible in the court of public opinion.

I’ll be the first guy to say that anytime you, or someone you are with, comes to blows with an old man driving a cab you don’t get much of a break.  Yet most of us can understand how it can happen without condoning it:

  • He’s 20
  • He was drunk
  • If you’re 20 and boozing, you’re probably not very good at it (please, keep the “South Buffalo Irish” jokes to a minimum).
  • He’s rich
  • He’s likely been pampered all his life, or at least since he was 14
  • He’s probably a prick and has no idea what this guy driving a cab goes through on a nightly basis

So the guy says or does something to piss Kane off (rumor has it he locked them in the cab and wouldn’t unlock the doors until he got paid, which set the little kid off with a “do you know who I am” rant).  Kane and his cousin are feeling strong, and things get bad.  But I doubt they got as bad as they were originally portrayed.

I guess what makes me leery is that the cabbie’s attorney said this:

“There was a dispute over the fee and it just kind of escalated from there.  It was not really a robbery. That is probably a large distortion of what happened.”

I am not a lawyer, y’all, but those are the words that are supposed to be spoken by the defense attorney, not the counsel for the plaintiff.  Something tells me there is a level of culpability on both sides, and that’s why the attorney is downplaying things.

Still…62-years-old?  Even if he is found innocent in court, it stays with him for a long, long time.

As far as the cabbie’s attorney goes, it’s all about the settlement now. If he’s downplaying the incident it’s probably because he thinks that’s the path to the most money.

If his sisters need someone to get them through this hard time I’m here for them.

If Kane is squeaky clean why did he hire Cambria (other than the fact that he’s an excellent lawyer)? Why does the cabbie have a lawyer? In a regular case the DA would be representing his interests. Then again, maybe Kane’s people wanted to talk to the cab driver’s people…work something out…or vice versa…

(yes, I wrote this on Facebook first)

  4. NOT THAT I’M CONDONING ANYTHING, BUT:
At least he took a cab instead of thinking he could drive home.

That said he’s still dumb for what he did. And I too was shocked to hear those comments from the cabbie’s attorney.

Becky, I don’t think there’s anyone in the world short of Mama Kane who thinks the kid is “squeaky clean.” I mean, he threw fists with a 62-yr-old.

But I’ll tell you what, if I was ever arrested my first call would be to a lawyer even if I was 100% innocent, and if I could afford him it would be to Cambria.

What’s the difference between Patrick Kane and a canoe?

    The canoe tips.

In spite of all the to and fro…

    STUPID KID!
And by 20, there’s no more free pass for being a stupid kid. That’s the voice of 1980-something (Chippewa St.) indiscretion experience. Some of us learn in a truly shitty way…
