USRT heading to the Big Apple

We are at it again!

This President’s Day weekend we are making the trek down to New York City and back, and the marquee event for this excursion will be the Sabres/Rangers game Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. This will be our first visit to the Garden as media folk, so it will be a great opportunity to enjoy this experience from the behind the scenes perspective.

Sandwiching that game are visits to two AHL venues – Friday night it’s the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza in downtown Wilkes Barre, and on Saturday night we head over to Bridgeport, Connecticut to see the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Arena at Harbor Yard. We have been quietly knocking off all the AHL arenas with USRT visits as well – after this weekend all that remain are Norfolk and the four venues in the midwest – Chicago, Rockford, Iowa and Quad Cities.

Things get underway on Thursday night over in First Arena in downtown Elmira. The Elmira Jackals have a HUGE showdown game against the ECHL’s top team, the Texas Wildcatters so we’re sure the whole city will be abuzz for that game. We have not seen the Jackals play since they moved from the UHL to the ECHL, and Elmira is right up there in the league standings.

We’ll be filing daily reports from the road as best we can, so check back and follow along!

I saw my first line brawl at Norfolk Scope (when it was still the Hampton Roads Admirals of the ECHL) – the legend John Brophy had a feud of some kind with the opposing coach, who hired some goons off the street to start a fight at opening faceoff. Brophy put his tough guys out and they went at it.
