Preparations are well under way at HSBC Arena for this weekend’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament . The hardwood court is already down and additional seats are being installed. Four games are on tap Friday and two on Sunday. The eight teams will take part in open practices on Thursday. Over 100 volunteers will be serving as hospitality ambassadors, as thousands of out-of-towners descend on the area. It’s the fourth time the tournament has come to Buffalo since 2000.
Police are investigating thefts of valuables from about ten vehicles over the weekend in Amherst. The break-ins took place in the Millersport-Sweet Home area. The vehicles had been parked on Rosemont Drive, Empress Avenue and Monarch Drive.
Meanwhile, the Amherst Town Board has put together an Eggertsville Task Force to respond to concerns of residents about economic development and safety. The Task Force will address small business development and job creation as well as going after problems with neglected properties. Supervisor Barry Weinstein says the group will focus on programs for seniors and youths.
An 18-year-old man wanted for a shooting in Niagara Falls has turned himself in. Howard Welch was wanted for allegedly shooting a 20-year-old man in the buttocks during a fight Saturday morning on Pine Avenue. The incident may be part of a recent uptick in gang-related violence. Police say the fight broke out just before 11:30 a.m. in a store near 30th Street and then spilled outside into an alley. Welch has pleaded not guilty and is being held on 100-thousand dollars bail.
A Buffalo man has been convicted of raping a college student before leading police on a high speed chase. 24-year-old Paul Imes was found guilty of attacking the woman under a loading dock on Perry Street October 13th, 2008. The judge decided the case in the non-jury trial. Imes contended that he had consensual sex with the victim, who testified that Imes offered her a ride to a friend’s house but attacked her under the loading dock. The woman flagged down a police car after the incident, kicking off a 15 mile chase on the Niagara Thruway that reached speeds reached over 100-miles-per hour before Imes crashed into a police car. Imes faces up to 32 years behind bars.
State police released dogs and a helicopter to track down an alleged can-fare cheat who is also wanted on out-of-state warrants.. 48-year-old Kevin Holt of California hailed a cab in Dunkirk Monday morning, wanting to go to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Police say the cab driver called in a credit card number, and discovered it was denied. The cabbie pulled over at a service area on the Thruway in Angola and called police. Holt claimed he would get cash inside, but took off. The chopper located Holt entering a garage on Gowans Road in Evans. Holt’s estranged wife lives in Dunkirk and he is wanted on warrants from California and Idaho for burglary and domestic assault.
A former Lancaster police officer has been hit with additional punishment for violating probation orders. 52-year-old Dale Horn will spend two years behind bars for possessing police gear that a judge had barred him from owning. Probation officers found the contraband during an unannounced visit to his home last month. Horn initially got in trouble last April for violating orders of protection filed by his ex-wife.
A Buffalo man faces charges of driving drunk with his seven-year-old son in the car. 53-year-old Thomas Jackson was arrested Sunday night following a one-car crash on Hemstreet Road in Elma. He now faces a felony DWI charge along with endangering the welfare of a child. Jackson is being held in the Erie County Holding Center in a previous drug possession case.
A man and woman are recovering at Erie County Medical Center after allegedly trying to kill themselves in an East Aurora park over the weekend. Police say the two are admitted heroin users who cut their arms in a bathroom in Emery Park Saturday morning
