New Era Cap is shutting down two of its three production facilities, which could put its plant in Derby into jeopardy. The company has already decided to close its manufacturing facility in Jackson, Alabama. That leaves only the Derby plant and a Demopolis, Alabama plant, one of which could close in the second-quarter of next year. Company President Pete Augustine says the recession is primarily to blame. The Derby plant currently has about 300 employees. Three years ago, New Era moved its headquarters to downtown Buffalo. That facility is unaffected.
The Niagara County teen who died of H1N1 has been identified. Fourteen-year-old Paul Nichiporuk died a little over two weeks after being hospitalized. He’d been in the ICU at Womens and Childrens Hospital with a temperature of 102. The Niagara-Wheatfield High School tenth grader also had MERSA, a strain of staph infection which is resistant to many of the commonly-used methods of treatment.
After months of weighing his options, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani may not be running for governor of New York. The “New York Times” cites anonymous sources in reporting that Giuliani has decided not to enter the 2010 gubernatorial race. The paper says it is unclear if Giuliani has other plans such as running for US Senate against Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed to Hillary Clinton’s seat. Erie County Executive Chris Collins is rumored to be pondering a possible run for governor.
