A Grand Island school bus full of elementary-aged students slammed into a tree head-on yesterday afternoon on Whitehaven Road. Investigators say a second vehicle ran a red light and collided with the bus, sending it into the tree. The driver of the school bus, 54-year-old Nancy Heftka, suffered a leg injury and was taken to Kenmore Mercy. The driver of the car, 81-year-old Fay Avarello, was taken by Mercy Flight to ECMC with head and chest injuries. One boy was taken to his doctor for treatment. There were no serious injuries among the children.
