This is why I wrote I just didn’t need any of the associated headaches with the Kelley article, and that is one of the nicer articles you will find.
In other news, Jim Kelley defends himself here.
I’ll be the first to admit that over the last two years I have grown to dislike Kelley’s writing. I’ve clearly had issues (I compare him to Stan Fischler about a third of the way down the post) with a couple of his articles in the last year-or-so. But I don’t think anyone would deny that Golisano has been sniffing around, and even Bucky Gleason hinted at it last year. But as some commenters pointed out, he clearly is using an inflammatory subject to draw attention to his new magazine at the most opportune time for him. Wrong? No. Douchey? Yes, at least to this Buffalonian. But then again, it’s not Kelley’s job to make me happy.
Wheres Dominik Hasek when you need him most. He’d take care of Kelley for us.
New magazine? Hasn’t WNY Hockey Magazine been around a while?

Kelley’s logic appears simple…the famous guy “somebody” says something about the Sabres playing in Hamilton. Unfortunately, “somebody” isn’t with the NHL or Sabres. Probably, the “somebody” was some asshole watching the Bills game who made an off-handed comment about “I think the Sabres should play a game in Hamilton.”
Seriously, fearmongers need to rot in hell. Kelley does not identify a source of the Hamilton comments. Kelley is a pathetic, pathetic man.
I, for one, enjoy reading Kelley. Take it for it is.
Don’t kill the messenger. His post-script was nicely done:
“Now as any student or even observer of journalism knows when the media is behind on a story — in this case reacting to the story that the team is for sale — the first rule of thumb is to get an affirmation or a denial. People who deal with the media regularly know this and if the story is untrue they offer up a flat-out denial and usually from the highest source possible. They also tend to tack on a repudiation of the story or the person who wrote it.
However, if the story is true but must be denied, you get what happened Monday, an adamant statement — in this case a denial that the team would be moved — to something that was never alleged and a carefully crafted response referring to negotiations, which, by definition, only take place when parties are actually negotiating. Since Quinn was playing golf at the time the story broke and not with the prospective new owner, it was accurate to say “we are not in negotiations.”
Dave, from what I understand this is a new venture with Kelley running the show
I don’t how old it can be Dave if they just registered their website in May: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/wnyhockeymag.com
and if they were hawking their “NHL Preview Issue” at an event in mid-November. That says to me that they’ve only produced one issue.
Maybe it’s a different venture, but I remember seeing WNY Hockey Magazines around in recent years. That NHL Preview issue couldn’t have been their first one. And like the USRT guys said in that post, they seem to have known Steve Manson a while (heck, his name even sounded familiar to me when I read it).
PA Pete: sorry but Kelley concedes the sale issue but remained committed to the possibility of games being played in Hamilton – which he and everyone knows is the back door for him to play on fears Buffalo sports fans have with the relocation of our sports teams. Plus HE IS his own source – he is the “someone” raising the possibility of playing games in Hamilton.
Kevin,
It’s obvious that Kelley has a big beef with Larry Quinn, and I don’t think he likes Golisano all that much either. He’s taken every opportunity to take a shot at the Sabres since the lockout and he ‘left town’ to work for Rogers Sportsnet.ca.
To each his own. Let’s see what Quinn has to say this afternoon on the House Organ, which, of course, everyone will salt to their particular tastes. In the end, if Golisano is trying to sell the team, can you blame him?
Ta,
In my opinion, Kelley is right on in his analysis of those who make public statements (not just Quinn et al). It’s all in the phrasing.
Some clarification — WNY Hockey Magazine has been around for a while. Owned and published by Steve Manson. The paper was recently acquired by Showcase Sports Marketing, the company which did the Aud memorabilia auction last month. Manson stays on as Publisher. Jim Kelley joins the paper as Managing Editor.
Clear?
