Sabres at Flyers Tonight

Honest to God, I wrote a 1,500-word piece before it got eaten this morning. So, you get the short version.

- Big game tonight, blah, blah, blah. Sick of typing it; you’re probably sick of reading it.

- Hecht and Ryan are out.

- Maybe Peters should play. Can’t believe I typed that.

- What the Hell did Bucky mean by this? For anyone who spent school snow days shoveling off basketball courts and frozen ponds, not six hours playing PlayStation: Does it mean we can’t read it if we’re under a certain age? Or does it mean because he once played street hockey he can speak with some authority on sporting matters? Seriously, I’m confused.

- 7:00 start from Wachovia center on Versus. Bad news, no RJ. Good news, no Harry Neale.

  2. WE NEED JOCHEN BACK!

    Versus?! Shit.
    Bad news, no RJ.
Bad news, no Neale (love the guy).
Bad news, camera waaay too zoomed-in.
Bad news, horrible, worthless camera angle during the shootout, if needed.
Bad news, VS people constantly talking about Briere and last July.
Horrible, eye-gouging news, Joe Fucking Beninati.

  3. Wolf says:

The last time I watched Vs was the last game against Philly, and for 2 hours it was a total effing Flyers love fest to the point where I’ve determined that the Vs network must be based in Philly. I swear at one point I actually saw Danny Briere’s “bodily fluid” on the chin of one of the commentators. It pisses me off that we have to be subjected to that again. Thank God it’s bowling night so I’ll miss the first two periods of the broadcast.

  4. Matt S. says:

    But…..it’s poetic justice!!

If I hear the words “poetic justice” tonight, I will step in front of traffic.

This Packers fan is already on suicide watch due to Favre retiring…I don’t need the Sabres to lose too.

  5. Zach says:

Isnt that what the radio is for. Turn off the sound on the TV, turn up the sound on the radio and enjoy. So what if you hear the goal before it goes in.

  6. Zach says:

Paille out for Peters? This should be fun to watch.

  7. RareUpstateBananaSlug says:

I know Kalinin has looked like shit, and Straw needs to be sent down or something – but Peters and Sekera?
Maybe we’re just hoping to draw a lot of penalties and gut Philly on the PP?

Also – to clear something up:
Poetic justice is a literary device in which virtue is ultimately rewarded or vice punished, often in modern literature by an ironic twist of fate intimately related to the character’s own conduct. (thanks wikipedia!)

How is Umberger scoring a goal ironic – isn’t that what he’s paid to do? I know it’s his first in like 8 games since the hit – but give it a freaking rest!
Where was virtue rewarded/vice punished? Did Miller bang umberger’s sister or something?

  8. Wolf says:

Zach, I’d do that, but I live out of state. I guess I could stream WGR, but if it doesn’t syunch up to the TV broadcast, it’s just gonna piss me off. Maybe I could synch it using the DVR, but that’s gonna be a pain in the ass for the one period I’m actually going to get to watch. Maybe I’ll try that next time though, cause anything’s better than those ass clowns on Vs.

  9. Mark M. says:

I’m kind of surprised that Ruff chose to scratch Kalinin. He’s looked bad lately, but I may have tried to reunite him with Pratt as opposed to benching him. Those two looked pretty solid playing side-by-side.

Off topic, did anyone see Campbell’s goal against Montreal last night? Wow!

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8207825625676847919&q=brian+campbell%2C+goal&total=14&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

  10. twoeightnine says:

Versus is owned by Comcast. Comcast is based in Philadelphia.

How old is Bucky by the way? I swear I expected him to be 75 but his picture makes him look much younger.

  11. boots says:

Why all the hate on Harry Neile? He’s not THAT bad.

  12. twoeightnine says:

I’m just surprised that Campbell used the spin-o-rama in front of Montreal’s goalie instead of San Jose’s.

  13. Kevin2 says:

That is the first time I seen that work against a defenseman (assuming that was a defenseman back), normally he just jukes around forwards with that crap. One day, that move will end his career.

I almost shat myself the time Harry Neale dropped the “Jackass in the rain” line.

Let’s hope we roll 3 lines tonight. I hope Ruff plans on using Peters for fights not shifts. Especially on away ice.

    When is Hecht back?

  14. Wolf says:

289… thanks for confirming that Vs is, in fact, based in Philly. My conspiracy theory has been validated!

  15. Heather B. says:

“Why all the hate on Harry Neile? He’s not THAT bad.”

Because he still confuses Pominville and Gaustad. Because he blamed Tallinder for a misplay when he wasn’t even on the ice and does that with other players fairly frequently. Because he calls everyone “TEAM NAME player.” Because he’s slightly senile. Because he’s not Jim Lorentz.

  16. Brendan says:

Heather B. – “Because he’s not Jim Lorentz.”

    By far his worst fault.

  17. RareUpstateBananaSlug says:

I like when Roby is in there with RJ rather than Neale, its like having a slightly more bitter Don Cherry

  18. Luke says:

Heather – For me it’s simply because Harry is boring.

  19. Gilbert P says:

Versus, hmmm… Maybe Mike “Doc” Emerick will finally lower himself to call a Sabres game? Nah! Ever notice how Emerick *never* does a Sabres game on VS, unless it’s a 3d round playoff game? Why do they always stick us with the second team announcers? Anyway, I expect the seocnd teamers again since they did the Caps/Bruins last night and it’s a short flight/drive from DC to Philly. Emerick can’t be bothered with a small market peon like us.

  20. Joelinvt says:

“Sometimes, it’s like being a jackass in a hailstorm– you just have to stand there and take it.”
With gems like that, how can you not love Harry Neale!? True, he’s starting to become a little bit of a crazy old coot with age, but that just makes him more endearing in my opinion.

  21. Heather B. says:

Harry does say one thing a game that totally cracks me up. But otherwise I don’t enjoy him. Brendan, you’re right that not being Jim is his worst fault. Which is unfair but there ya go. It’s how I feel.

Gilbert, Doc works for the Devils as well so I’m sure there’s probably some kind of scheduling thing going on. Or he hates us.

  22. Brendan says:

Having Harry Neale made me realize just how good with had it with Rick and Jim. I hope Rick realizes that his retirement is going to triple – or more – the suicide rate.

  23. PA Pete says:

    Kev,

I’m with Heather, Dave in Rocha, etc.
    Why the Harry Hate?
He’s awesome. We’re lucky to have him.

Try listening to NESN, Fox Sports Pittsburgh or anyone on any of the Comcast outlets. They’re all horrible.

As for versus, their HD picture is as good as anyone’s.

  24. trevor says:

So Peters is in over MacArthur?? Get your shit together (C)indy!

Maybe he needs to be scratched.

  25. vtTom says:

harry neale’s comment on mick mcgoo’s (sp?) helmet being so big it must have been made at the Ford plant was a gem…

Yes, he is Uncle Forgetful somewhat like Van Miller near the end of his Bills days but he’s got a little more bite & wit.

  26. JMills says:

I just hate it when Neale doesn’t finish his sentences, which is almost every one of them. Definitely is like Van Miller in his last year or two broadcasting the Bills.

  27. Mark M. says:

To be honest, I am sometimes surprised with Ray’s wit. He caught me off guard last game with RJ and Neale were talking about two guys writing a book. They made a comment to Roy, and Roy says “Yeah, well knowing those two they needed help writing it too”. I LOL’d.

  28. Keller says:

I think we need Lindy to work a little harder. He was outclassed the past two games. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he’s holding the team back a bit.

He better be large and in charge tonight.

  29. Keller says:

Mark—those guys were Joey Kocur and Bob Probert.

  30. twoeightnine says:

I loved Ray’s comment on the book. That was the first time I literally laughed out loud during a broadcast in awhile.

  31. Keller says:

Next thing you know Shawn (maybe Sean) McMorrow will be writing a book.

  32. Big Bri says:

Hey guess what? On June 30th Versus moves to their new digs in… you guessed it.. Philly.

They will occupy a bunch of floors in the Comcast Tower which will be the tallest building in the city.

You have to give them credit though for having a nicer studio than MSG. Intermissions aren’t so bad… of course I say that because I freelance for them.

And the audio usually synchs up with the video.

  33. Frank says:

Haha no love for Harry Neale = no surprise. This site is so pro Sabres. You need to be a homer fan or announcer to get any love around here.

  34. vtTom says:

They will occupy a bunch of floors in the Comcast Tower which will be the tallest building in the city.

Wasn’t there a law at one time – “no bldg taller than the Wm. Penn statue”?

My wife lived in Philly in the 70’s-80’s (bitch always brings up the stanley cup parade she went to) I could have sworn she told me about the billy penn thing.

  35. Heather B. says:

“You need to be a homer fan or announcer to get any love around here.”

If “home announcer” equals being able to recognize all the players on the team by number or playing style then yes, I totally prefer that.

  36. keller says:

this is the best pre-game tread ever…VTtom just put the exclamation point on it.

  37. keller says:

I liked Harry Neale until he wore his Leaf jersey in the press box during the last Toronto game.

  38. Frank says:

Heather B preferred the good old days when less than 5% of the players named during a Sabres telecast were from the opposing team. Rick and Jim were terrible.

  39. PA Pete says:

    @ VtTom

The top of Billy Penn’s hat was the unofficial high mark for Philly architecture.

But, dude, that went away nearly 20 years ago. There are many, many buildings that look down on Billy Penn’s hat, which by the way is on top of City Hall.

  40. Becky says:

Wait a minute here…It is perfectly rational for Buffalo fans to prefer to listen to announcers for their team show a slight preference for their team.

National announcers should be neutral, but rarely seem to be to the opposing team.

  41. Big Bri says:

So does that mean that twenty years ago everyone had to look up to Billy Penn’s butt?

  42. Kevin says:

Imagine, a Sabres blog that is pro-Sabres. Who would have thunk it?
