Bulls Post Miracle Victory

It all came down to one play for the UB Bulls. Trailing 28-24 with five seconds left on the clock, the Bulls faced a do-or-die attempt from Temple’s 35-yard line. Quarterback Drew Willy rolled to his right and fired a high-arching ball to the end zone, right into the waiting hands of Naaman Roosevelt, touching off a celebration inside UB’s stadium that has not been seen in my memory.

All seemed lost for the Bulls just 45 seconds prior to that, as Temple had scored the go-ahead touchdown to take a 28-24 lead. But the Owls proceeded to boot the ball out of bounds on the proceeding kickoff, giving UB hope at it’s own 40-yard-line.

UB trailed the game 21-14 going into the half, and they had to be feeling deflated after they had rallied to tie the game at 14 each with less than one minute to go in the half. Temple then fumbled on the ensuing kick return, and UB had the ball at Temple’s 40 with 50 seconds left. But Willy fumbled on the next play, allowing Temple to drive for the score with six seconds left in the half.

After halftime, UB came out determined, scoring 10 unanswered points while controlling the line of scrimmage. Yet they failed to pull away as Willy was intercepted at Temple’s two, and turned the ball over on downs at their 35.

In what amounts to a huge win for the Bulls program, Drew Willy was once again the standout player for Buffalo, going 29-42 for 348 yards and 3TD’s.

Some thoughts:

- I thought it was over multiple times today, the first of which was when Temple scored right before the half after UBhad a shot to head into the locker room with momentum and possibly the lead. After Willy fumbled, Temple marched down the field in scary fashion for a quick six. A “loser” team folds it up right there. UB did not.

- Save for his one pick, Willy played a damn-near perfect game. Coupled with his opening game, there will be pro scouts nosing around for the entire season.

- Nice to see a decent crowd on hand. The lower bowl was filled between the twenties, and the upper deck had bodies around midfield. End zones were empty, but given the fact that the field is ringed by a track it’s not surprising, as you’re far from the field in the end zone.

- I’m not the most ardent follower of UB, but TE Jessie Rack came out of nowhere to me. Probably five or six catches for around 100 yards.

Best part of the final TD? Roosevelt had three defenders all over him. If that doesn’t describe Temple football nothing does.

Just saw it on College Football Overdrive on ESPN News (they said “Maybe the best game of the day”). Nice on-field interview with Turner Gill surrounded by cheering fans. Yeah, it’s Temple, but games like this are still damn good for the program.

I see Starks had only 20 yards on 8 carries. Please don’t tell me he got hurt.

In years past this headline would have been reserved for their one victory a year. Its fun to see, next week at Mizzou notwithstanding.

dont knock temple, they are at the same place in the football world as UB. this was an important win. past history means nothing in the present.

was at the game…what a blast.

i may be wrong but i dont think starks was hurt… but he was ineffective, and with thermolus and henry on the roster, it makes no sense to stick with starks if he’s not going 100 percent. he spent some time on the pine vs. UTEP, too. i respect gill, he doesnt play games.

also i am impressed with the way UB uses the tight end – 4 different TEs caught passes today. excellent use of the depth of talent on offense…now if D shores up…we’re looking at a bowl game.

and i know this is the crack talking, but maybe UB can give mizzou a scare. missouri has one of the candy-assest schedules in the country. if the bulls can score a couple TDs on defense or special teams…maybe its a game.

I finally got to watch once WNGS got their act together. Helluva game. 10 players had a catch for UB. Looking forward to next week

One down, one to go. Hopefully the Bills won’t have to go to the last play to win tomorrow. Great for the Bulls and a program that is earning respect. Hopefully the in-laws enjoyed the game too.

The play was on the 8:00 AM Sportscenter 4 times. That’s more exposure in an hour than UB has had for their entire program’s history.

Vote Early and often for the winning touchdown pass to be espn’s game changing performance of the week.

The play was #2 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays from the Weekend, after Zambrano’s no-hitter.

i just heard on ESPN radio that missouri has scored 12 TDs and 1 FG in its last 13 possessions…yikes.
