From WGR:
The Sabres have signed forward Jason Pominville to a 5-year extension. The 26-year old was entering the final year of his contract, but will now be with the team long-term. WGR 550 has learned that Pominville will earn over $5 million per season. The new deal kicks in after the 2008-09 season.
I like the deal, though I’d be hesitant to offer that kind of money to any more forwards. He’s shaping up to be a point-per-game player, and keeping a guy like that locked up during his prime years is always a good move.
Discuss.
So he’s here for 6 more years. Let’s hope he’s vastly underpaid by the end of this contract…
Nice! I’m happy with that deal.
Good deal, lock in the future. There is always a chance that the deal looks bad if the guy underachieves, but the alternative is the annual fire-sale of sabres talent like we’ve had the last couple years. Miller is in place, with a decent back-up, we’ve upgraded the defense, so maybe things are looking up for this season.
I take back all those evil thoughts I had against Darcy.
I hope he does NOT get crabs… (now)
Going out on a limb here, but if Rivet plays well, the forwards stay hot, and Miller improves just a little, I’m thinking home ice in round 1 of the playoffs. Call me crazy…
There seems to be not too much excitement around the Sabres this year (yet). Everything I have read says they should compete for a playoff spot. I say bullshit. We should be a top team in the east competing for the privelage of a beatdown by Detroit in the finals. I see a vastly improved team this year.
Goalie – shored up the backup, Miller entering his prime will be better.
Defense – Hank & Lydman as good or better than last year. New guy & Spacek as good as Spacek and an overrated CAmpbell. Second year Sekera and Teppo much much better than Kalinin/Pratt/ first year Sekera of last year. Less or no Paetcsh is a plus. Plus a solid Weber to step in for the impending injury.
Forward – A healthy Max and Timmy will be huge. People are so down on Max, but I see him racking up the points this year and getting his shit together with Ruff. No one is even talking about Timmy who is our top forward when healthy and will upgrade our PP and PK big time (I love me some goose, but on the PP and PK, he scares me). A full year of late season Vanek and Roy is 50 goals and 100 points. Poms, Hecht round out a high scoring top 6. Paille could be a stud. Goose is a given. Kotlaik in a contract year. That is an ubeleivable top 9. Gerbe could contribute. Clarke, Stafford, Mair is a fourht line that beats any in the league. Peters always looks good in the Press box. Plus he can bodyguard poms and Roy from all the chicks that will be attacking them at the bars. No Ryan, less Kaleta is an upgrade.
Specail teams on both sides should improve.
We can’t be any worse at shootouts which cost us lots of points last year.
We have room under the cap to add a key piece at the deadline. When I say key, I don’t mean the crap we pulled the last two years in Zoolander and the one game wonder baby bear. I mean a true sacrifice the future for a rent-a-future hall of famer.
The big plus is that the overwhelming majority of our key players are moving into their prime years and will be better than last year (Vanek, Roy, Poms, Miller, Sekera, Paille, Stafford) or are in their prime and will be as good as last year (Tallinder, Lydman, Goose, Hecht) and few are deteriorating (Spacek, Teppo, Mair).
Plus we still play Toronto a crapload of times which is a lot of points in the bag.
Less than a month. Lets catch the fever, no?
Few coaches in the league do as well building a team over the long term as Ruff. With the Rochester core secured at a fairly decent price, the team can still afford the occasional free agent acquisition. That means he’ll have a four-year window of opportunity to win a cup with this team.
You gotta like their chances. Young, not so soft any longer, experienced, still fast enough to skate with the best teams, and one of the best coaches in the league.
Kevin2:
I know it hasn’t translated into blog posts, but I’m counting down the days till the season starts. The extra long offseason (no playoffs plus training camp starts a week later than usual) is KILLING me. I just figured I’d bore everyone if I wrote a post saying that every other day.
can’t wait for the season to start !! LET’S GO BUFFALO !!!!
