You’d better watch out. You’d better not cry. You’d better not pout, I’m telling you why.
Golisano has invited him to a Sabre’s game, and there’s lots of discussion whether this is smart or dumb for Golisano to do.
My take:
1. As far as securing the Republican nomination for governor through an early endorsement or a primary, it’s a kiss of death for Golisano. The more conservative folks in the NYS GOP won’t take too kindly to Golisano chumming it up with the guy they pretty much treat like the anti-Christ. Not to mention his wife is our Senator, and she’s pretty reviled by the GOP faithful. Weld, Manning, Daniels, etc. would be running ads of Golisano sitting next to Clinton. That’ll get the grassroots good and pissed.
2. Once Golisano fails to become the Republican nominee, he’s free, I suppose, to run as an independent again, or on the IP line. If so, the Clinton visit will be long-forgotten, and not have any real benefit. But if he’s relegated to a minor party line come September, he’s got a very slim chance of winning.
So, my thought is that Golisano is kicking himself out of the race.
The Republicans are in complete disarray. Ed Cox dropped out in favor of Pirro for Senate, and now she’s gone. Could Cox come back? And who the hell is John Spencer, anyway? (Another guy who’s going to lose to Hillary). In the gubernatorial race, there’s practically a full-scale revolt, with people like Manning calling for an open primary with no official endorsed candidate, and State chairman Minarik pushing incessantly for a united front behind Bill Weld.
Weld’s a good guy, but he’s not exactly been lighting a fire under the Republican grassroots.
The more these guys act like the Keystone Kops, the more likely it is that Spitzer wins handily.
