The Amazing Race comes to Western New York. Whodathunkit? Apparently, this is nearing the end of the 8th season, which features families of 4 racing. Evidently, they didn’t stray from this hemisphere, which is a crying shame and somewhat defeats the purpose of the show.
The beauty of the Amazing Race, to me, is not so much the interpersonal relationships that are de rigeur reality TV fodder, but the opportunity to see average Americans deal with language barriers and culture shock. I love seeing places I’ve never heard of and examining it through the racers’ eyes. I also like the idea of seeing familiar places, but unfamiliar parts of them. The back streets versus the tourist traps.
I wish more Americans traveled abroad, because that sort of exposure to different people and cultures broadens one’s mind and perspective.
