Hevesi’s in free-fall.

Siena College’s poll of likely voters this morning predicts that the state comptroller race is now too close to call. Hevesi maintains a 39-35 lead, down from 52-25 last month.

In other news, Hevesi just paid another $90,000 back to the state for his wife’s driver – that’s in addition to the $83,000 he already paid.

Seriously, if you have the kind of scratch that enables you to pony up almost 100 large at the drop of a hat, couldn’t you just hire a private driver/bodyguard for your wife? Why on Earth would Hevesi ruin his political career like this?
