Jon Powers, NY-26 Congressional Candidate has announced the endorsement of General Wesley K. Clark.
Fittingly, the Iraq war veteran’s announcement that Clark is supporting his candidacy came just days after Veterans Day.
“General Clark is someone I have admired for a long time both professionally and personally,” Powers said. “It gives me great pride to know he sees in our campaign the same values of service, accountability, and leadership by example that he himself has demonstrated in his service to our country.”
Clark, a 34 year veteran of the armed forces, retired from the military as one of the nation’s most highly decorated military officers since General Dwight D. Eisenhower, and is world-renowned as an expert in foreign policy and national security matters. His many awards and honors include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, The State Department Distinguished Service Award; five time recipient of the US Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal; two time recipient of the US Army Distinguished Service Medal, The Silver Star, two time recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and Honorary Knighthoods from the British and Dutch governments.
“Jon is an example of the best kind of leader that our Armed Services produce,” General Clark said. “The men he served in Iraq with can testify to his brand of leadership by example, and I am proud to throw my support behind his run to represent the people of Western New York in Congress.”
In particular, General Clark singled out Powers for his commitment to:
“This Congress has the fewest number of veterans of any Congress in recent history,” General Clark said. “If there were more veterans of principled leadership and good conscience like Jon in Washington, I have no doubt this nation will have turned a corner to a brighter future. I encourage all veterans to stand with Jon, just as Jon will stand with them when he gets to Washington.”

Alan I know you think the much maligned Ashley Wilkes is God’s gift to Generalship, but I wouldn’t necessarily wear that endorsement like a beauty pageant sash.
I’m much more interested in where Jon Powers stands on the issues facing the district than I am in some washed out generals opinion of him. I’m also interested in what parts of the military industrial establishment sends him donations.
Besides, it isn’t like Tom Reynolds sought out endorsments from Generals and was denied–(NOT A REYNOLDS FAN)
Let’s see some Q-A on local issues of political import by Mr. Powers.
Generals are a dime a dozen. With the Exception of Adm. Hyman Rickover (who once delivered me a well earned ass chewing), and Gen Alfred Gray, my division Commander and later Commandant of the Marine Corps, I’ve never met a flag officer whose opinion would sway me one way or the other. Neither Rickover (RIP) or Al Gray would venture into the political arena to endorse a candidate.
So, until I start seeing some straight tallk from Jon Powers about what he sees as priorities and what he plans to do about them,
WHO GIVES A SHIT WHAT WES CLARK THINKS!!!
Patience, Hank. Patience. It’s not 2008 yet.
This is just another example of how out of touch Dem pols are, even a newcomer candidate.
What is?
Thinking that the endorsement of Wes Clark means something or matters in any way.
Whereas Republican pols who continue to follow Mr. 28% are tuned in to the zeitgeist. Pfft.
I guess we’ll see in 12 months who’s more out of touch. Including in NY-26.
We just saw it in the past few weeks. We don’t have to wait another 12 months, but if that’s what it will take to convince you, then okay. You’ll see it again.
Oh, and for those of you who are not that patient, look at polling data on job performance for the Democratic Congress and the Democratic Governor, especially how people in their own party feel about them. For those of you too lazy to look, the Congress’ approval rating is even lower than W’s and we all know how you guys feel about him.
Yes, approval ratings for a group are almost always lower than those for a specific individual.
Like I said, we’ll see in 12 months who’s out of touch.
That’s lame. Congress has often been judged more favorably than an unpopular president. But we’ll see.
And explain to me how a candidate that couldn’t hold his own in the Democratic primary will assist a Democratic candidate in a heavily Republican District. He can’t get a majority of support in his own party, but he’s going to help someone who needs all of that party plus a fair share of the other party?
That’s a brilliant strategy. We’ll see in 12 months how that goes. And I’m so glad the Dems in this area are not willing to learn anything from November 2007. Just keep on ignoring the voters and what they say and come up with all sorts of justifications and excuses for lost elections and low poll numbers.
November 2008 is going to be great if things keep on this track.
Yeah, good times ahead for Republicans. Their brand has never been stronger! LOL.
Because he’s a former 4-Star General and SACEUR who has actually gone to war and has more knowledge about war and security than Dick Cheney and George Bush could ever think to learn, and national security seems to be a pretty big issue. Even with Republicans, believe it or not.
What a waste of time. A cookie cutter press release. Clark could have inserted Gomer Pyle instead of Powers in the release and it would have meant just as much to this race. Clark may know how to fight a war, but he doesn’t know snot, nor cares, about Powers, Reynolds or NY-26. He is merely trying to stroke his own narcissicistic ego that most generals have.
I have to agree with Hank. Until Jon Powers or anyone else, including that old codger Davis, figure out that just being “not-Reynolds” won’t get them elected, this release is just a waste of paper.
You should have a “Contribute to Jon Powers” link-thingy here, like Atrios and Kos do for selected candidates.
Hank,
You are lucky to have known Al Gray, he was tremendously important in bringing maneuver warfare to the Marines. Interesting note for everyone else, Al Grey was made commendant of the marines under then Navy Secretary and now Senator Jim Webb.
Most people here are missing the point of endorsement, its not about winning votes, its about credibility, among Democratic activists locally, donors both nationally and locally, and the press locally. Its also a nice press clipping, but it will change few minds.
BH Liddell Hart
I’ve had couple of conversations with the General. He’s also honorary National Commandant of the Marine Corps League, a Detachment of which I am Commandant of in NC.
Bottom line in this thread is this:
I wouldn’t care if Jon Powers was endorsed by “Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy”.
Democrats, including a few commenters on this thread, told us Eliot Spitzer was the Answer to NYS’ Problems.
Wanna believe them again? They OBVIOUSLY knew so much last time…….They were SO RIGHT.
Back to tatonka’s idea–Don’t matter if he’s an ignorant philandering hack with a drinking problem…JUST SO HE’S A DEMOCRAT.
Anyone know where Powers stands on the issuses?
