Pundit, I was present and accounted for at these events, and I can attest that this is the worst travesty of governmental power run rampant I've ever personally witnessed. The Republican majority in our county legislature essentially takes its marching orders from a Karl Rove wanabe named Steve Minarik. You may remember that he's the one that the statewide Republican party tapped to take it to electoral victory in 2006, but the two-bit tactics and threats he uses here didn't play the same way in the Albany big leagues. So after the New York Repubicans took a sound drubbing, they shipped him back to us and it's been back to the old hardball bossism. It's especially shameless considering that the Republican majority in our county legislature, after local defeats last year, is now down to one vote - and the local Dems came within a few hundred votes of taking a seat that would have given them the majority for the first time in 15 years. Perhaps this close margin is making the polarization even worse. Nothing to keep your troops in line like an us-vs.-them fight to the death - perhaps a bit of that on both sides of this.

But Pundit, you've gotta check out the coverage of this on My Fair City's newest new media venture: The Smugtown Beacon (SmugtownBeacon.com), just launched by two political comrades-in-arms. The detailed, firsthand accounts you'll see there are priceless, and will leave you shaking your head in dismay. I bet you'll find the Beacon a fitting addition to the RaChaCha section of your blogroll.
