So it’s all but confirmed. Jack Davis is going to run in a primary against Jon Powers and Alice Kryzan. According to Robert Harding at Albany Project:
Jack Davis spoke to the Genesee County Democratic Committee tonight. According to a few of my Genesee County sources, he spoke like someone who was in the race. At one point, he questioned why the Genesee County Democrats would endorse NY-26 Democratic candidate Jon Powers. Apparently, he labeled such an endorsement as premature because he deserves a chance.
Davis mentioned a few things that were interesting, to say the least.
(1) He said at one point that he could go to Washington and take on Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Charlie Rangel and others in the House Democratic leadership.
(2) Davis claimed that Monroe County Democratic chair Assemblyman Joe Morelle, Niagara County Democratic chair Daniel Rivera and Erie County Democratic chair Len Lenihan will all side with him, not Powers.
So? Frankly, I’m fundamentally against party committees taking sides in a primary. I think the voters should have a chance to make an informed choice, without one side having an official “stamp of approval” over another. But such is life.
(3) Attacked Powers on a few different issues, namely his “life experiences” and the claim that he hasn’t held any other job besides his service to our country as an Army captain.
And as a teacher in the Clarence schools. I know that must not represent an important “life experience” to xenophobic one-issue candidates like Jack Davis, but I think it’s pretty significant. Being a well-respected Army officer seeing active combat, and then creating a charity to help war kids in Iraq on one’s own initiative is ample “life experience”.
Davis also blamed former staffers for his lack of campaigning in 2006, which is not true. I spoke with a Davis staffer in 2006 who is not on staff with Jon Powers and that staffer told me that Jack refuses to listen to any of his staff. They would tell him to do something and he would ignore it.
I’ve heard the same thing time and time again.
But in the end, Davis informally declared his candidacy tonight. He keeps saying he won’t say anything for sure until March (I’m assuming he wants to have a special ceremony for the event) but tonight he certainly sent the signal that he is running for the Democratic nod in New York’s 26th congressional district.
If ever he was going to win, 2006 was it. That was his year. He was handed a golden ticket to congress, and he blew it like Mike TV – at the last minute.

Again, as I posted in the last thread, if Powers can raise $1M by March 31st, then those who do these things will talk Davis out of running. If not, Davis is the better candidate, because Powers will never be able to keep up with Reynolds, who already has $1M. $350,000 – Powers cash to date is enough to buy you a staffer, 1 mail piece, and 10 days on TV.
Davis has committed to $2M. If the money is equal, Powers is the better candidate. If Powers can only raise $350,000 per year, he’s gonna get outspent 5:1 and get crushed by TR.
We need to remember 3 things:
1) this seat is going to disappear in 2012
2) taking the State Senate will ensure that we can draw lines that will give us a Democratic Congressional seat here
…Therefore…
3) the 61st Senate District is much more important toward ensuring a long term Democratic Majority than the 26th Congressional is.
While realizing that there are only so many miles he can walk, so many hands he can shake, Powers has something Davis does not.
When Powers walks away from a voter, no matter what their age, no matter what their party affiliation, they nod their heads and say “I’m going to vote for him.”
Jon Powers. Classic Buffalo political story. Kid with no real brains, who held no real job ever, but who possesses only a smile and a handshake, gets stupid Western New Yorkers to vote for him. Say hello to another political hack in the making. This is why WNY is horrible.
Carl – I take exception to your comments.
“Kid with no real brains who held no real job ever”
Have you met Jon or researched his life experience? Since when is defending your country during wartime in a volatile part of the world NOT a job? How about contacting families of soldiers that died under your watch…is that worthy of being considered a job? How about starting a non for profit company to help children with enormous needs. Certainly starting a company constitutes a job.
“possesses only a smile and a handshake” – I am not going to go where a retort easily could, but you should see his slide-tackle and his can jam skills. If you don’t know what I am talking about, perhaps you are out of touch.
“Say hello to another political hack in the making. This is why WNY is horrible.” – What exactly is it that makes WNY horrible? Are you predicting that Jon will win and that is why WNY is horrible? Or is the fact that someone WITHOUT political experience is running for office that makes WNY horrible?
If you are going to contribute to the conversation, at least say something constructive.
Hurrah for Carl, that discription is spot on.
Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican you should be incensed that a candidate such as Jon Powers can’t get the support of the Erie County Democratic Committee just because someone with “his own money” might want to run again (for the third time)!!! If Western New York is going to rebound and build a sustainable future, we MUST encourage people like Jon Powers who represents our future not the past. If we keep discouraging young professionals from taking leadership positions we’re going to wake up some day and realize that we are a region that had an impressive past but not much of a future.
I take it Powers is running on more than one issue?
That alone would make him better than Davis
I don’t know, so far everything I’ve heard about him centers on Iraq.
jack davis didn’t win last time because the “progressive” wing of his own party sat out the election, cynically deciding that another two years of representation by a loathsome, war mongering, sex scandal covering up, republican haircut would be better than having a democrat they didn’t like personally.
that said, i’ll still support jon powers even if watching his campaign go down in flames would break my heart if i still had one.
niagara county dem chairman dan rivera, by the way, is an “official” in name only. he has overseen years of disaster in the county legislature, to the point where only three of its members are actually dems while a few others run under that flag but actually take their orders and funding from gop chair henry wojtaszek. he was unable to find anyone to run against mike violatne for district attorney, and even his own committeepeople are supporting republican ernie palmer in the upcoming special election for niagara county sheriff.
the party here doesn’t have two nickles to rub together and rivera will be lucky to finish out his term.
and yeah, committees endorsing in primaries sucks.
Go Powers Go!
Talk about experience, what is Tom Reynolds experience? He is a career representative.
Tom is bought and sold by K street lobbyists and on board with whole GW program.
Chris Collins will endorse Powers, right? Because Collins is against career polticans.
Hey Carl : Those “stupid wny’s” you talk about have voted Reynolds into power for 10 years… where the f*ck are we now? worse off than when we started.
To those who think Powers never held a “real job” are you saying those WNY’ers who work in resturants, retail stores, working for the towns (ie: jon’s job in the town of clarence), creating and running a non-for profit charity, working in the military, and getting a college education to become a teacher not a job?
if so they go stand in front of the teacher’s unions, or the legion hall, or the town workers and tell them they don’t hold real jobs.
i know people who have had jobs for 3o years but still don’t have the leadership qualities of a chipmunk.
