The rights of a civil union should be equal to marriage, but the whole controversy is that the people suing won't stop there, they are demanding that it be called marriage. I guess civil unions might satisfy you, but the people bringing this to court are demanding that it be treated as the same thing by everyone. I can't see into the future, but would bet if this does go through that there will be a boom in discrimination lawsuits, not against the government.

EMS said

I don’t have to show you jack shit because the issue at hand is the federal government discriminating against a minority group of consenting adults based solely on sexual orientation.

This is completely different than being born a different race, it's a behavior, but you treat the civil rights movement and gay marriage as the same thing. You "don't have to show me anything" because you can't. You're simply wrong, orientation is not the same as race.

@Hank:

I'd love to see one verifiable link that shows ONE same-sex couple demanding that a church marry them. Probably in the same article with the Easter Bunny, hippies spitting on soldiers returning from Vietnam and

I'd love to hear about your daily travails Hank with all those "homosexuals" getting in your face all day. Where the hell do you live - Queer Village? Dykesville? Thunder Gay?

Methinks you're projecting a wee bit....odds are good no LGBT has ever "gotten in your face". I'm sure no gay man has gotten within 20 feet of you, unless he had some fetish for 300-pound, piece of shit racist homophobes.

No one is forcing churches to ordain same-sex couples as they do heterosexual unions.

Better look again. Homosexual couples are suing for the right to use church property for their ceremonies. To the congregations they see it as an aberration and an abomination.

Nothing stops many homosexuals from getting in your face, getting ugly and forcing you to accept them. I don't care if they accept me for what I am, what the hell is THEIR problem.

Timothy:

No one is forcing churches to ordain same-sex couples as they do heterosexual unions...the crux of the matter is ending discrimination against same-sex couples - call it what you want (marriage, civil union, etc) but same-sex couples should have the same rights (spousal inheritance, hospital visitation, etc) as hetero couples currently enjoy.

Okay since you want to compare it to the civil rights movement, show me the scientific evidence that people are born gay in the clear way that they're born a certain race or sex.

Even if it were clearly genetic, what's the difference between calling someone Mr and Ms, why isn't that "separate but equal"? Who was talking about keeping things separate anyway? It's not separate, but different. Your analogy is false.

@Timothy

does the phrase "separate but equal" ring a bell?

I don't care about the Bible, but what they are doing here is trying to change the law so it says that a man and a man "marrying" or a woman and a woman "marrying" is THE SAME THING as a man and a woman marrying, and that's ABSURD. What's wrong with civil unions?

gay marriage? we're going to gay marriage here based on the behavior of some fucked up congressman from the mississippi? what a stupid thing. i think gays should be forced to be married like the rest of us, and up in massachusetts, everyone should have to gay marry.

but requiring us to spell the two hardest to spell states on this, the day before the fourth of july?

unamerican i say!

I believe strongly that a child adopted by a homosexual couple (HOMOSEXUALS HAVE PERVERTED THE WORD "GAY") has a much better chance of a normal childhood and a happy, productive adult life than being in the liberal-administrated Foster Care system.

The void between parents who care for each other and love enough to want to choose a child to raise, and people who perform 24 hour daycare for a check from the state is massive.

And that fact doesn't change my belief that a religious union between homosexuals is repugnant to my religious background, education and outlook.

I've seen the effects of divorce on children. I've seen the results of children who are raised in a home with no love in it because the parents are staying together "for the good of the kids". Neither situation is worth a fuck.

Liberals: IN LIFE THERE ARE SITUATIONS WHERE THERE IS NO GOOD SOLUTION.THE GOD OF GOVERNMENT YOU WORSHIP DOESN'T CHANGE THAT.

I feel strongly people don't try hard enough to fix the problems that bring their marriage to the precipice of divorce.

Alan--don't bring political affiliation into matters of the heart and relationships---that dog just don't hunt. Ask Hillary Clinton about it.
