UPDATE: From the Buffalo News in 1998, Alice Kryzan spoke on the 20th anniversary of the Love Canal fiasco. (We just this year remembered its 30th anniversary):
Alice Kryzan, an attorney who represented Hooker and Occidental, said Hooker’s waste-disposal policies in 1978 “were entirely legal and well-ahead of the industry standards of the times.”
And, she said, scientific studies have yet to prove a link between chemical exposure of people living in the area and health effects.
In the case of toxic torts, causation of injury is notoriously difficult to prove, but if you’ve got an entire neighborhood that’s located on top of a toxic site contracting some form of cancer or auto-immune disease, you need to rely on that circumstantial evidence. And although she’s a lifelong Democrat, just eight years ago, she thought Tom Reynolds was doing a bang-up job to the tune of $250.
Oh, and the real victim of Love Canal was Hooker/Occidental. Not the families who lived there and contributed to the “hysteria”.
You know, just so we’re clear.

splett…i see people on television now who are there for no other reason than that they consulted on the laughable dukakis/gore/kerry campaigns. donna brazille, susan estrich etc. likewise, pat buchanan, george stephanopolis, joe scarborough, chris matthews and many others only have the jobs they have because of the political work they’ve done.
that kind of stuff is always a plus on a professional’s resume. god i hate amateurs.
some guy named rob asked me about political work i’ve done and i told him. i did it for money, it’s what i do for a living, in much the same way you bus tables at denny’s.
if ridge was so awful for enlisting as front-line infantryman during vietnam, what’s that make powers, who also enlisted, but only if he could remain “in the rear with the gear,” as they say?
it’s funny that no one’s remarked on how the democratic leadership of western new york is spending the week in denver, thus leaving clueless golden boys klike powers dangling on their own here.
@ Mike Hudson – Maurice Hinchey (D) who represented the district from 1992-2002
Just an FYI to those of you paying attention to Kryzan for the first time — I suggest you read her website before making comments that are off-base. In reality, Kryzan is the only candidate in the race with a comprehensive energy and environment plan, a comprehensive plan to get us out of Iraq, and who has pledged to support campaign finance reform. If you take a moment to look at her positions, you can see she’s the only real progressive and the only one talking issues. She’s out there on FISA, on healthcare, on green jobs. It’s fine if you don’t like Kryzan because she isn’t backed by the establishment or because you think we need to run a former Republican to win this district. But, I think we should rise above the misleading claims about Kryzan, and start talking facts.
All of these smears against Kryzan are a joke. She has the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters and the attorneys who defended the residents of Love Canal. She has the backing of local environmentalists. She’s been a Democrat for 60 years, and these are the only negatives people can find. Powers and Davis have been Democrats for five years between them, and they already have a bunch of scandals each.
thanks humanist, you get the gold star. of course i knew the answer, but couldn’t resist pointing up wizzes’ overriding igorance of politics.
Kryzan isn’t endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters. She was endorsed by the New York League of Conservation Voters. Just to be accurate.
**”She’s been a Democrat for 60 years …”***
Is that supposed to be a positive ? Just sayin’….
Note to Kryzan supporters here for the first time:
This blog is filled with people who [disgusting graphic description deleted] Jon Powers every single day of their lives.
Your attempts to appeal to them are pointless, because they are NEVER coming off their point. This isn’t really a place frequented by undecideds…
Kryzan can’t win in this district. Period. Her dandidacy is over as far as I’m concerned. She honestly seems like an intelligent woman, but she can’t win here and that’s that.
hey wizzes, you’re political insights are astonishing!
Thanks Hudson. Your brilliant analysis in the Reporter is also hard to top. Citing fake polls and “strategists” must make it a bit easier though.
“… the huge button on Davis is a good touch. They should have had money falling out of his pockets and Powers carrying a soccer ball or something…”
Now THAT would be really funny.
I’m sure Alice and company are taking notes…
@ Mike Hudson:
“it’s funny that no one’s remarked on how the democratic leadership of western new york is spending the week in denver, thus leaving clueless golden boys klike powers dangling on their own here.”
uh….I don’t think Powers is sitting in his rocking chair on his porch, yelling at the kids to get off his lawn, like Grumpy Gramps Davis is doing:
The Buffalo News: Powers Plans to Visit All 7 Counties in District
August 26, 2008
Congressional candidate Jon Powers says he will visit the seven counties in the 26th District in the next seven days.
Powers, the endorsed Democrat heading into September’s three-way Democratic primary, said he will visit with farmers, teachers, senior citizens and students. His tour will end on Labor Day as he marches in some holiday parades. Powers has been endorsed by the Democratic committees in all seven counties….

got mentioned by a buffalo news writer in his blog today. said i had a “poison pen.” do they mention you, wiztard?
kryzan will still likely finish third in the race, but by a larger margin than expected due to the ugly campaign being waged by powers and his mean spirited supporters. i still think it doesn’t matter though, as lee will undoubtedly prevail in november.
“got mentioned by a buffalo news writer in his blog today” wow hudson this is sad, talk about lower expections. I guess you shot your wad with Vince.(still waiting for FBI) Or did Johnny Chef pay you off too?
Hardwick, you said Alice has not had time to meet the voters. Why not? She’s freaking retired and loaded, so it is not like she has to raise money and it isn’t like she had to work during the campaign. Truth be told, she is just lazy and not willing to do the work or invest her money in her efforts.
“Truth be told, she is just lazy and not willing to do the work or invest her money in her efforts.”
You have personally met with her or know someone who knows her well enough to make that statement?
Just wondering…
Seriously – The headline on her website yesterday was “Kryzan visits Niagara and Monroe Counties” as if it was some big deal.
Kryzan is the kind of liberal everybody is annoyed by – instead of talking to people, she just tells people what they need because she knows better.
Hudson- Much like you, My bills get paid by writing for a print publication, so please spare me the ‘amateurs just don’t understand’ line. If the work done by guys like Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan is the journalism your striving for, it tells me all I need to know about your motives in the business.
That’s not the point I was making however. I really have no problem with the work you do at the Reporter and I think you getting that suboena was a whole lot of bullshit.
What I was calling out was your association with Tom Ridge, a guy that easily makes my list of top 20 fuckwads in American politics. It ain’t punk rock buddy, no matter how you wanna spin it into being about your journalism career.
Oh and what does that make Powers? Just as big an opportunist douche as Ridge. I’m not a Powers supporter. I actually agree with the majority of the criticisms you make of him despite the fact any good points you ever make get buried under piles of ridiculous personal attacks you make against the anonymous commenters you deem insignificant-no-nothings yet still always take the bait and engage.
splett…do you honestly think that, at the age of 52, i give a shit about “punk rock”? i wrote a book about my experiences in a band many years ago because i knew it would sell, i could make some money and perhaps make a couple points about living as a creative person in a corporate society. punk rock has not existed since 1980, so get the fuck over it.
punks hated hippies, who now call themselves progressives. haven’t you ever seen the photos of the sex pistols, destroy all monsters or the dead boys clad in nazi regalia?
the ramones did “today your love, tomorrow the world,” originally titled “i’m a nazi baby”.
“first rule is / A love of germany.”
punks smoked, drank did hard drugs and got in knife fights with puerto ricans. they didn’t give a shit who was in congress. they hated jimmy carter.
and what publication do you make your living writing for? unless it’s the nation or mother jones, which it’s not because i’d have heard of you, i’m certain it — and therefore you — do not adhere to the strict standards you would set for me.
@ Meyer – Facts are facts and here are the ones surrounding my statements above.
Lazy and not willing to do the work – She is retired, campaigning full time, and has not received one single solitary endorsement until her friends at the Conservation Voters coaxed the NY affiliate to hop on board…in August. So, yeah, I would say the complete inability to secure even 1 single endorsement of ANY kind – No Dem Party nods, no union nods, no civil rights nods, for Christ’s sake – not even a lawyers group?????? NOTHING! So acknowledging that she is not stupid (b/c clearly she is not), she is either incredibly arrogant or incredibly lazy. She either wasn’t working hard or people, in general, just don’t like her.
Not willing to invest her money in her efforts – It is clear to anyone who has even glanced at an FEC report that Kryzan is completely incompetent when it comes to raising money, but Doug Turner reported that she is also worth millions. If she wasn’t just a dilettante doing this to say she did it once as she is making the rounds of the blueblood cocktail party circuit, maybe she would put her money where her mouth is and not run a campaign on fumes.
Or people realize she can’t win the general! Which is true.
Actually, she is right. Hooker did go above and beyond in their waste disposal procedures, and they were a victim. The people who lived there were victims as well. The real villain was the Niagara Falls school board. Hooker tried to keep the land away from any potential development. The NF school board sought the land to increase the burgeoning school population of the baby boomers. Despite Hooker’s warnings against development and refusal to sell, the school board unrelentingly threatened to seize the property via eminent domain.
With the only recourse being to turn over the and to the board, Hooker did extensive studies to determine what could be feasibly developed on the land. It was determined that one school and a playground were the extent of development. Hooker then sold the land for $1 and had those development restrictions put into the title.
Seeing that more money could be made if the whole of the land was developed, the school board had those restrictions removed from the title and sold the land to a private developer. Thus, the Love Canal neighborhoods were born. Even though the restrictions were violated, this was not what led to the ensuring environmental disaster.
Two factors were the catalysts for what came next. The first was the unusually high amount of ground water from precipitation. This in and of itself would not have caused the environmental disaster as most of it would have run off into the river without any chemicals reaching the surface. The problem arose from the second factor, being the Robert Moses pkwy. With it’s construction the pkwy acted as a dam for any chemicals that would have run off into the river. That coupled with the high precipitation caused the ground water to rise, bringing the chemicals to the surface. The rest is history.
Ben, the “real” story at this point does not matter. Alice defended the polluters and that’s all anyone knows about her. Now she is polluting our television screens with terrible, pointless commercials.
Plus, that doesnt answer the real question: Why for the love of God did she call the victims of Love Canal “hysterical”?
Alice? Alice? WTF is Alice?: do you have any idea what you’re talking about? Kryzan is the hardest working candidate in the campaign. She has raised the most money in the district, and all through her own hard work.
Powers, meanwhile, is the establishment candidate. He hasn’t had to work for anything, other than cozying up to New York City fundraisers and Washington pols. Maybe that’s why he’s already out of touch with the district at 30. He’s talking about a teacher shortage in the 26th? has he ever even been here? and the rest of his policies are straight DC talking points, which is probably where he got them. He hasn’t even had to work for endorsements, since the establishment leaned on local dem parties and unions to support him even though locals knew he wasn’t a good candidate.
his idea of grassroots work is to have his handlers take him around the district so he can give the same canned speech that says nothing. then he has you all blog about how he’s in touch with the people. if he’s so grassroots, how come all his money is from special interests, PACs, and NYC powerbrokers?
It’s fine to support the establishment pol if you like the way things have been going for the last 10 years (and supporting another Bush Republican is a good way to keep things the same). But don’t try to pretend like this is some sort of grassroots campaign while you trash the only real progressive grassroots candidate in the whole race.
JoeP – Get real.
1) You can’t be a grassroots candidate when you have no supporters.
2) Alice would take PAC Money if she could get it, but she can’t. Why can’t she? Because she’s a terrible candidate to run in this district.
3)According to Powers’ filing, the vast majority of Powers PAC money is Labor money. Alice is anti-union? Good to know.
4) Alice is lazy and/or just does not know what she’s doing. When the headline on your website is that the candidate visited a county within the district, you have a hell of a lot of work to do.
5) Alice seems to have quite a bit of NYC money in her filing.
6) Alice defended the Love Canal polluters and called the victims hysterical.
Thanks!
hey wiztard…did you see any of the interviews lois gibbs gave earlier this month? and you wonder why mr. kryzan called them hysterical? i need some of whatever you’re on, brother.
Calling parents hysterical when their babies are coming out with 3 arms is a bit offensive.
You wouldn’t understand, Hudson. You don’t have to worry. With the amount of booze in your system, no germ or toxin stands a chance, so Ms. Kryzan won’t be calling you hysterical anytime soon.
no babies have been born in niagara falls with three arms, you moron. ms. kryzan is simply one of three candidates in the race more qualified than the fourth, your beloved jon boy. primary day fast approaches. i cannot wait!
No babies with three arms — just two time losers like hudson. No wonder parents are hysterical.
Sadly hudsons to fat to type into the fec filings and see that Powers has the highest number of actual supporters in district.
Kryzan got a bunch of UB professors to dump money in because he hubby, and Lee has more supporters in the state of Florida that he does in district… and Davis just hates those mexicans.
If retired family members from florida could vote – lee would win
If big cartoon dollar sacks full of cash could vote – davis would win
If huge eyebrows could vote – kryzan would win
Sadly, only people registered in WNY will vote – so Powers will win.
Hudson – if Powers wins the primary will you run the headline “Mike Hudson is an Idiot” on September 10th?
and for the anticipated no – what are you a chicken? you feel Powers will win?
All i want from Hudson is for him to issue a correction when the next NF Reporter comes out.

Love Canal section of Niagara Falls, N.Y., that formerly contained a canal that was used as chemical disposal site. In the 1940s and 50s the empty canal was used by a chemical and plastics company to dump nearly 20,000 tons (c.18,000 metric tons) of toxic waste; the waste was sealed in metal drums in a manner that has since been declared illegal. The canal was then filled in and the land given to the expanding city of Niagara Falls by the chemical company. Housing and an elementary school were built on the site. By the late 1970s several hazardous chemicals had leaked through their drums and risen to the surface. Investigations confirmed the existence of toxins in the soil and determined that they were responsible for the area’s unusually high rates of birth defects , miscarriages, cancer , illness, and chromosome damage. Families were evacuated from the area in 1978, and in 1980 the Love Canal area was declared a national emergency.
