Deep Thoughts

Indifference
I don’t really give two shits whom Obama or McCain picks as a running mate.

Consider the Source(s)
I believe that the leaking of a barrage of alleged e-mails between Sam Hoyt and his former paramour(s) to embarrass Hoyt a few weeks before the election undoubtedly originates from City Hall.

When You’re a Jet, You’re a Jet all the Way
Hoyt’s “Sharks” to Brown’s “Jets” are hitting back, but for now it’s far below the radar. There are rumors being floated that if true would be, in many people’s opinion, far more scandalous than the revelation that Hoyt cheated on his wife.

Party of One
As I indicated yesterday, the State BOE now reports that Jack Davis has filed 890 pages and 6 volumes of petitions to get himself listed in November on the “Save Jobs and Farms” party ballot. I hope that each page was worth every penny.

Labels
Illuzzi is getting hammered right now on WBEN. I suspect that the fact that the News and TV media have referred to him as a “blogger” bothers him more than anything.

Best post you’ve written all year. Factual and funny.

And even Fox News agrees with you in that the word “VEEPSTAKES” is the worst fucking word in the lexicon. Who GIVES a shit? Nobody I know.

  2. Brian says:

I actually care about the “Veepstakes”.
The odds of Obama being assasinated is high, as well as John McCain dieing of old age (or his Alzheimer’s getting worse). I would say that there is a 25% chance that either of these two would not finish there first term.

  3. mike says:

I agree with brian, hank just ordered a mail order Carcano rifle just in case his man loses.

  4. Jennifer says:

Alan. I love this post as well. Enough said. Perfect beginning and end.

  5. mike hudson says:

i’d forgotten to mention that jon powers’ conviction on a charge of disorderly conduct is exactly the same charge sen. larry craig was convicted of following the famous restroom incident at o’hare airport in chicago. both men pleaded no contest. other than the fact that craig was the subject of much condemnation & ridicule here, while powers has been staunchly defended as the victim of some sort of political attack machine, the cases are identical, from a legal standpoint.

    and where are those 990s?

  6. Davis loves bribes says:

Hudson – is the campaign under legal obligation to disclose them to you?

if they are filed then what more do you want?

  7. Dan Meyer says:

I loved that post. Had a feeling of some type of “random thoughts” post if you ask me.

Illuzzi is probably taping ‘BEN right now.

And I’m sure Joe’s “sources” are also listening.

I didn’t realize Bauerle’s fill-in host would acknowledge the story as a topic of conversation on the 930-AM airwaves. Interesting. I didn’t even have the radio on until I read Alan’s post a couple of minutes ago.

Keep up the great work Alan.

Mike Hudson… any update from you on the legal situation you are being forced to deal with?

  8. Jack Davis says:

Where are my bribe receipts from Orsini and his wife?

  9. Hudson, seriously, you are the shittiest, least accurate so-called “journalist” that ever stomped up and down like a toddler.

    1. Larry Craig was arrested at an airport in Minneapolis, which is in Minnesota. Minnesota, if you didn’t know, is not the same as Ohio, which is the state in which Powers received an appearance ticket (not taken into custody). Unless Minnesota has adopted Ohio’s statutes, Powers was not ticketed for the “exact same charge”.

    2. If you’re such a bang-up “journalist”, you could probably call Powers’ campaign with your own fingers and ask them where the 990s are, no?

  10. Red says:

I think Larry Craig’s problem was that his arrest stemmed from something he had specifically preached against his whole political career. That’s the ridicule. I know that it’s not polite to call a cop a “motherfucker”, but I don’t see Powers campaigining on a platform of “Swearing is immoral.”

I tend to agree that the VP nomination is important, but not “24/7 coverage” important. I don’t agree, Brian, that the chances of Obama getting assasinated are high. There’s always some group of lunatics that think any particular president should be killed; I don’t think the group that would think Obama should be killed is any larger or more likely to succeed than any other. McCain, well, his health and age may be an issue; but whatever else you may think of him, I’ll bet the guy that handled 5.5 years as a guest of the North Vietnamese should be able to handle himself against a lot of health concerns. Not to mention that the Senate health care plan should keep him up to snuff…

  11. John says:

“I’ll bet the guy that handled 5.5 years as a guest of the North Vietnamese should be able to handle himself against a lot of health concerns.”

Yeah, but this time, who’s he going to betray in order to get better medical care for himself?

I’d rather have a president who doesn’t have a record of breaking under pressure.

  12. The Humanist says:

@Mike Hudson – I must have missed that part of the story where Jon Powers signalled to the cop that he’d like to suck his cock.

  13. Jack Davis says:

Jack Davis for Vice-President. Maybe I’ll run on the save the jobs and farms party… even though farmers hate me.

  16. mike hudson says:

so basically what your saying is that larry craig’s disorderly condict charge was worse than jon powers’ disorderly conduct charge because it involved homosexual behavior?

    i get it now.

  17. mike hudson says:

dan meyer…thanks for asking, i sent the following letter, certified, registered, whatever to the board of elections asshole who subpoenaed me:

    8/18/08

    Dear Mr. McCann,

In connection with the state Board of Elections subpoena delivered to our offices on or about Aug. 13, 2008 by Mr. Owens, we can’t help you.

None of the items enumerated in the subpoena exist, primarily because the Niagara Falls Reporter, its officers and staff have never had any dealings of any kind with Jack Davis. Not in 2005, 2006, 2007 or calendar year 2008, to date, as you put it.

He has never bought an ad or a book from us, has never visited or called the office on the telephone. He’s never been a source on a story, on or off the record. No one here has ever spoken to him, nor can anyone remember ever having spoken to anyone involved in any of his various campaigns.

Whoever put you on to us gave you a bum steer.

That said, as a resident, voter and business owner in New York State, I found your outrageous attempt to inject the Board of Elections into my affairs wholly inappropriate. Furthermore, I found your officious manner of speaking on the telephone highly offensive.

I have registered written complaints about your actions with state Sen. George Maziarz, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Buffalo and the Federal Elections Commission. I have also dedicated this week’s front page to your Stalinesque “enforcement” techniques.

    Sincerely,

    Mike Hudson, Editor /owner

  18. Looks like you complied with the subpoena. I thought you were going to fight it.

  19. Jack Davis says:

hudson really knows how to make friends. way to be a professional journalist… “bum steer” is a great command of the english language.

i’m also suprised that you seemed to have never met anyone involved with any or the available political campaigns in NY-26. Yet you hold opinions of them like you’re best friends?

Interesting. So when people call you a jackass, fraud, phoney, loser, drunk, etc… and you get mad and yell back that they don’t know you or have ever met you… does that make all you say a hypocrasy?

  20. Mike Hudson Is Drunk says:

    Hudson –

    Craig illegally solicited sex.

Why do you hate gays so much Hudson? Put down the bottle and come out of the closet

  21. mike hudson says:

didn’t seem to make much sense. did manage to find out that the subpoena was prompted by a boe compaint from dan rivera, niagara county democratic chairman and ardent jon powers supporter, which should put to rest gossip about it being a gop plot to undermine jon boy in the primaries. rivera filed the complaint at the same time he filed the one with the niagara county district attorney’s office.

just like any grown man or woman, i oftentimes do things for money. sometimes, however, i do things because i think they are the right thing to do. i decided all by my lonesome, with no prodding or payment from anybody, that jon powers is a phony. i don’t like jack davis either, by the way and for the record.

  22. Red says:

Hudson, I’m not saying Larry Craig’s charge was better or worse, more deserved or less deserved, or what the hell ever. What I am saying is that you’re bound to get ridiculed a lot more when you’re charged with doing something that you’ve been preaching against as a major part of your political platform.

Actually, in both cases I think the charges were absolutely ridiculous. In both cases it doesn’t seem that the accused did anything that should be considered criminal.

Craig allegedly signalled that he’d like to engage in some sexual activity; he didn’t actually engage in it or offer or attempt to pay for it, did he? Why would it matter whether the activity was homosexual or not?

Jon Powers allegedly communicated his distaste for a cop in a rude manner. Did not physically approach or assault the cop, and actually denies yelling anything.

Neither instance seems worth an arrest, honestly.

  23. mike hudson says:

red…i wasn’t really commenting on the charges themselves — i generally think that if you don’t physically hurt anyone or steal money/property the laws ought to pretty much leave you alone — but rather on the reaction to the charges in certain quarters.

craig was nailed to the cross here and in other forums while powers seems to be portrayed as an innocent victim of circumstance. that of course is reflective of the (highly) partisan nature of these little blogee things but is bothersome nonetheless.

alan’s argument that disorderly conduct is different depending on where you do it is inane to the point of ridiculousness but does rather prove the point.

  24. Bucky Gleason's Dog says:

    Hey Hudson,

    What gives?

    http://www.brucebattaglia.com/

  25. mike hudson says:

    also, aside from the grammatical problems associated with the clause, “bum steer is a great command of the english language,” i would direct the functional illiterate to a dictionary, where he/she/it might find;

BUM STEER: An instance of false or misleading information or directions especially when purposely so. (Merriam-Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary)

BUM STEER: erroneous; ill-advised; misleading: “That tip on the stock market was a bum steer.” (Random House Unabridged Dictionary)

the phrase is apparently australian in origin, and gained currency in this country following world war 1.

  26. Hudson, it’s the search function. Learn to use it.

First of all, we have what’s called a federal system, and there are as many variants of the “disorderly conduct” law as there are states. Thus, if Larry Craig was convicted of disorderly conduct due to a guilty plea in Minnesota, it is not the same thing as a no contest plea to a disorderly conduct charge in Ohio, any more than it is the same as a guilty plea to a disorderly conduct charge in Alaska. I thought factual accuracy was the hallmark of good journalism.

Second of all, I posted exactly two things ever about Larry Craig – one excoriating him for being a homophobe who is evidently closeted, but has the power as a legislator to make life difficult for regular homosexual people in this country. The second poked fun at him using a vernacular phrase that was reminiscent of what he was accused of having done in Minnesota.

I happen to think it’s a big deal when an apparent closeted homosexual advocates for and votes for laws that deny homosexuals what I think are basic human rights. I do not happen to think it’s a big deal when a college kid gets popped for cursing out a cop outside a football game.

  27. mike hudson says:

a college kid? wasn’t the congressional candidate powers popped less than four years ago? yes, i’m sure of it. let’s see, i have the citation right in front of me. it was in october of 2004, it was!

as for the journalism, buster, i do that when i get paid. here i’m more than content to just piss you off.

  29. Full Page Ad Parlato says:

    @ Hudson,

Using your own words, completely in context with the original sources linked, hardly constitutes character assassination. Perhaps you were referring to the character suicide you commit every time your pickled synapses fart out thoughts that you no longer have the capacity to filter out or reflect on. Your writings and behavior bare out that you are entirely without the capacity of personal reflection, perhaps because a punk cares only about himself. No matter how inappropriate, destructive or gross a punk is, the blame always rests with the rest of the world – and it is entirely worthy of your endless, self-important scorn.

You are laughingly and frenetically inconsistent in your analysis of events and people. You are utterly incapable of recognizing, or more likely, unable to admit to truth. This is borne out in an endless supply of interviews and articles, from you or about you, found on the web. You constantly manufacture your truth and blurt out whatever words are needed to screw your personality into whatever you feel is called for at any given moment.

Nothing, it seems, is capable of helping you to wake up, man up, mature up, and rethink this putrid teenage punk rock angst you carry. What was ugly in a teenager is totally indefensible in a man of 50+ years. Your own personal fallibilities, misdeeds and self-destructive behaviors are so monumentally beyond the scope of what most people could possibly imagine falling into that it is beyond sad that you can’t offer people with much less stain on their souls some understanding and empathy.

Your non-stop, bile filled outrage with its complete lack of concern for anyone that hasn’t slobbered up to your perceived self importance or purchased a “please don’t print bad things about me” full page ads in your paper prove that monetary gain for you comes at all costs and integrity and honesty are nowhere to be seen.

As for anonymity: You have proven to be a person whom gets sick glee and just relishes his character assassination role, in your abuse of the power of the press. You are openly prone to violent tendencies and outbursts. You are propped up by enablers that give you the opportunity to spew forth your singularly unique, vindictive positions. If you had stayed in the military for more than 6 months, instead of crying about people hollering at you, perhaps you would have found a good greater and much healthier than merely satisfying your own ferocious hungers.

  30. mike hudson says:

and i’m pretty sure that calling an on-duty cop a motherfucker is against the law in all 50 states, douchebag.

  31. The Weatherman Formerly Known as Don Paul says:

My oh my…. we are having some fun today!

    Details at 11.

  32. mike hudson says:

the ferocious hungers? that would be a great name for a band!

    give it a rest sigmund.

  33. The Humanist says:

@Hudson – calling a cop a motherfucker (which is in dispute if Powers was the guilty party) is not against the law in any state, in and of itself. The cop may very likely decide to apply a “disorderly conduct” charge, as was done to Jon Powers, but there is not a single law anywhere in this country forbading citizens from swearing at cops.

Now, on the other hand, signalling to an undercover cop that you want to fuck in an airport men’s room, possibly in view of children, is against the law…it’s called “engaging in lewd conduct” which is what Craig was initially charged with.

Only a fool or a tool would think these two incidents are the same.

  34. mike hudson says:

how is it in dispute when powers paid the $90 in fines and costs resulting from the charge?

  35. mike hudson says:

the charge craig plead to was disorderly conduct.

and if you’d like, i’ll take you around to a few states, including new york, and introduce you to some cops you can motherfuck and we’ll see what happens.

  36. The Humanist says:

@Hudson – what did he plead “no contest” to? Disorderly conduct….that could be one of a 100 things, like “hindering or preventing the movement of persons on a public street”. Powers says he didn’t swear at the cop and he can produce witnesses to that effect.

  37. Russell says:

Humanist, if a cop can slap a disorderly conduct charge on someone that calls him that or anything resembling that, doesn’t that make it against the law? Maybe not de jure, but de facto.

The cop did use the swearing as an example of the disorderly conduct. Although Jonny wrote he didn’t say that on the citation, he did plead no contest to it. It doesn’t matter how many witnesses he can produce today. The courts have already ruled on it.

  38. It’s quite hostile here.

Davis indicated back in early July that he’d be seeking a third line. And he led on that he may resurrect the “Save Jobs” party to be that line. I think this is an indication that Davis thinks he’s in trouble in the Democratic Primary.

  39. lulu says:

Hudson, you (and Russell) are doing Jon such a great service by so ignorantly slamming him so often on this site and making such ridiculous comparisons all the while keeping his name in the spotlight for all who read this site.

Thank you for consistently reminding us that Jon Powers is a young and energetic national hero with a life long service history running for Congress right here in our own community! Your constant attempts to blast him at every turn are proving to be very good for his campaign! Simply brilliant! Thank you and go Jon Powers!

  40. Deep Thoughts From Andrew Sullivan says:

“In all the discussion of John McCain’s recently recovered memory of a religious epiphany in Vietnam, one thing has been missing. The torture that was deployed against McCain emerges in all the various accounts. It involved sleep deprivation, the withholding of medical treatment, stress positions, long-time standing, and beating. Sound familiar?

According to the Bush administration’s definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured.

Cheney denies that McCain was tortured; as does Bush. So do John Yoo and David Addington and George Tenet. In the one indisputably authentic version of the story of a Vietnamese guard showing compassion, McCain talks of the agony of long-time standing. A quarter century later, Don Rumsfeld was putting his signature to memos lengthening the agony of “long-time standing” that victims of Bush’s torture regime would have to endure. These torture techniques are, according to the president of the United States, merely “enhanced interrogation.”

No war crimes were committed against McCain. And the techniques used are, according to the president, tools to extract accurate information. And so the false confessions that McCain was forced to make were, according to the logic of the Bush administration, as accurate as the “intelligence” we have procured from “interrogating” terror suspects. Feel safer?”

    Here.

  41. peter scott says:

is calling an on-duty cop a motherfucker really against the law?

    pretty disrespectful…but, against the law?

I’m asking in all seriousness…no snarky snark here

  42. Russell says:

lulu–See, I knew you were a big fan of mine. I’m glad you’re finally admitting it. Like I said before, though, if that’s the way you want to spin it, fine, but good luck with that. I really don’t think anyone on here is undecided in this race. I doubt enough people in the 26th district read this to even make a difference in the election. If anyone is getting that Jonny’s a national hero with a lifelong history of service from anything that’s been posted on here, not just by me or Hudson, then they have a problem. I do admire your attempt at stroking my ego by saying I can influence the results of a Congressional election, but I do have to dismiss your overzealous adoration.

  43. Rate PG-13 says:

    Very hostile indeed.

    Kinda scary.

It’s not even September 1st and people are spitting bullets.

    I want my mommy………

  44. Russell says:

Peter, it was included in what the arresting officer wrote in the citation. According to the officer, and it seems the courts and Ohio law bare this out, yes, apparently it can be classified as disorderly conduct in Ohio.

  45. mike hudson says:

lulu….they call it the 26th district perhaps in reference to the 26 readers of this site, but hopefully i reach a lot more people through my newspaper (22,000 copies a week) and web site (1.7 million satisfied customers) than i do here. in any event, thanks!

POWERS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES TELEVISION AD CAMPAIGN

Ad Emphasizes Powers’ Message of Change for Washington and Western New York

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – Jon Powers, Iraq War Veteran and the endorsed Democratic candidate in New York’s 26th congressional district, today launched his television ad campaign with the spot “Introducing Jon Powers.”

“We are excited to be up on the air,” said Powers. “Our campaign has always been about bringing the voices of Western New Yorkers back to Congress and that’s exactly what this ad is about.”

The ad emphasizes Powers’ commitment to creating a new generation of jobs in Western New York, protecting social security and bringing change to Washington.

The 30-second ad will begin airing in the Buffalo market today.

  48. mike hudson says:

that was the powers’ campaign’s offical press release, and is attributed to victoria dillon. note the lack of capital letters in social security.
