The Assault on Blogs Backfires (or Buffalo Mainstream Press gets PWN3D)

On Sunday, Buffalo News editor-in-chief Margaret Sullivan wrote:

And, on a deeper level, how much should we be concerned that we are playing a part in perpetuating dirty politics? After all, the common fare of blogs — which often have their own axes to grind and their own less-than-admirable motivations for publishing — often does not meet the standards of a responsible news outlet.

The Buffalo News’ motivation for publishing is to make money through advertisement. The axes that its editorial board grinds are quite evident on any given day on the Op-Ed page. Why is she lumping all blogs in with whatever she had in mind when she wrote that paragraph?

Then, within mere hours, the Buffalo News and the rest of the local supposed mainstream, serious press all got pwn3d by some bullshit press release posted to a completely unreliable site that will post any nonsense as a press release. The responsible media did not double-check the sourcing of the Nicole Kidman story until after her publicist basically said it was “highly suspect”.

Seriously, all of the very important mainstream press that has used Illuzzi/Hoyt to denigrate the motivation and information found on blogs just got their comeuppance. Fail.

As Atrios would say – Time for a blogger ethics panel!

What grosser than Buckham’s utter failure to do any investigation at all was punking Kathleen Gaffney. What an asshole.

The Hoyt scandal was a MSM problem too. Exactly one blog posted the information before it appeared in other news sources. It was the NY Post that even went so low as to list the former employee’s name. It wasn’t until it appeared within the MSM that the blogs commented on it.

Remember a while back when someone signed a letter to the editor with the outrageous monikker “Volmit Scheiss” … I only studied Spanish but even I knew Scheiss was a no no. The the responsible and high minded gasbags at The News had to apologize. Anybody else feeling the wand of the deja vu fairy ? Maggie needs to look in the mirror and remember how she got her sweet gig, good old fashioned nepotism. High standards my arse.
