Jon Powers is and will always be a friend, and I am disappointed that his run for Congress was unsuccessful. I am also disappointed that a bright, brave, and caring young man’s character was improperly, falsely, and viciously attacked. I only wish that he could have responded to the smears more swiftly and strongly.
I still firmly believe that Jon represented a great chance for average, middle-class Western New Yorkers from this district to regain their voice in Congress.
Jon sent out the following today, and I chatted with him at great length about his campaign, his new job, and the political scene as it stands a month out. It was about 14 months ago that I first met him and began actively supporting his candidacy. I will continue to support him and his future works.
By changing his domicile to the DC area and ending his campaign, the Working Families Party line is Alice Kryzan’s for the taking. I wish her the best of luck in defeating the unemployed Chris Lee.

Friends,
I hope this email finds you well. We have talked a great deal over this last year about how incredibly important this election is to the future of our country. New leadership in Washington will be responsible for navigating us through these challenging economic times, implementing an energy policy that will break our nation’s addiction to foreign oil, and bring our troops home safely, securely, and soon.
As you know, my family and I have been highly invested in this year’s election and believe that each of us has a responsibility to serve this nation in a fashion that can help play a role in the change we need. Each of us is responsible for being part of the solution that will help get our nation back on our feet.
Erin and I know that we still have a role to play in this year’s election. We have decided to take a job opportunity in Washington, DC that will allow us to make an impact on a national level.
I will be working with the Eleison Group to develop Veteran Advisory Councils for Congressional campaigns across the country. This will allow me to help candidates not only understand the issues around the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but put together policies to ensure we are taking care of those who served us. The Veteran Advisory Council provides me an opportunity to engage veterans in Western New York and across the nation to make sure they are working with their local campaigns to provide the critical first hand knowledge that someone who has been in combat brings to the conversation.
We have decided to stop our campaign and I am no longer running for Congress.
We want to thank each of you for your hard work and dedication. Please continue to serve in your community and find a way to get involved in this year’s elections.
This campaign was never about an individual, it was about this community. If you believe that together we have the power to change Washington, then please continue to work toward the dramatic change our country needs.
Sincerely,
Jon

clarence, I’m no expert either but what I read the other day made it sound like the issue is whether his declaration that he won’t be living in NYS when Election Day arrives is sufficient grounds to remove him from the ballot ahead of time. Maybe courts will decide. Considering the district isn’t liberal, I can’t imagine the WFP line gets many votes anyway so it probably won’t matter either way.
We’ll disagree about the sad thing. The shrinking-stagnating is like the freezing winters in that it sucks but there’s nothing anyone can realistically do about it, so might as well just accept it as part of life.
Splett – Maybe you can buy a new country for yourself on E-Bay? Clearly you have no use for this one. Best of luck finding ANY happiness in life.
Wow Splett you are certainly insane. According to Bush, you hate American soldier’s so much…. you must be a terrorist!
what Sally said.
@ Mike–You’re so right—
In Lebanon we refereed pillow fights between Fatah, the Druse Militia,
and any other nut-case that picked up a gun. Evacuating the PLO from Lebanon—that was just a parade–that’s why the cameras were 10 miles away on a hilltop so they wouldn’t be where the bullets were flying.
You know so much about me—better study up, ya fucking tool.
Alice sucked in the debate last night. She was as dry as a stale piece of toast. Lee does not know what the fuck he is talking about. All he can do is spit out cheesy GOP talking points. What great candidates we have on our hands!
splett – why can’t you just do good deeds to do them? why do you have to be running for something to do them?
you can’t name three good things you’ve done so you insult the American Armed Forces?
No offense, working as a dj doesn’t = charity work, it =’s hobby. Unless to listen to you “spin” gang members surrender their weapons.
You take someone who does good in this community and nation, and attack their motives, when in fact you don’t do anything yourself. Truly pathetic.
side bar – if we do count your dj work (where is it so I can come hear you “spin” dj jazzy jeff?) you’re still 1 short, and that’s with giving you your paid job as the first charity work.
What a bunch of whiners!!
As a Davis backer turned Kryzan supporter, I say shame on you, “Powers Platoon.”
Get real, Democrats.
This obsessive, sycophantic drooling and crying is just pathetic.
@everyone bearing some adjustment to wiztard’s name here and, in fact, everyone other than splett, hank and carlotta, and especially including pundit — you people played a big role in powers’ defeat.
your contempt for military service, except for powers’ military service, showed you to be anti-american scumbags of the first order. your dismissal of allegations against powers, relating both to his dubious “war kids relief” phony charity and the drunken police incident in cleveland lulled his campaign into thinking they didn’t have to respond.
your scurrilous attacks against jack davis — hey pundit, have those “bribery” charges been filed yet? — were sophmoric to the point of insult to any thinking voter and the effete and supercillious tone employed throughout offended so many people that an easy victory was turned into agonizing defeat.
no wonder he left the area. his “friends” did him far more harm than any of his enemies.
this same loser group is now engaging in the same loser tactics on behalf of barack hussein obama.
and i’m certain john mccain is thrilled.
LOL.
Was that hudson handing out Hands off Cuba papers ?
InTheLoop – No. What’s pathetic is the candidate you work for and get a paycheck from. She’s fucking lazy and she sucks. Why the fuck isn’t she out campaigning? Honest to God. The “boys take it somewhere else” cutsie ad isnt going to work in the general so you people better light a fire under Alice’s ass and get moving. At this point the best your campaign can do is avoid a complete embarassment and turn it into a solid defeat.
Drunk Hudson – I don’t have contempt for anyone in the military, so I guess your argument is debunked. Thanks. Go mix another Manhattan and shut the fuck up.
Hudson is in the garage with betty ford drinking anti freeze
Yep. At this point Hudson could drink gasoline. His liver is so rock solid and worn out that it can handle anything.
I wouldn’t attack Hudson for his drinking, but I would attack him for the fact that Davis never endorsed Hillary as far as I can recall, and if anyone was anti-military it was Splett more than pundit.
Pigeon’s checks must still be clearing, because only a scumbag like Pigeon & his boy Hudson would bother to keep on insulting an ex-candidate.
in the loop – A Davis supporter? really? wow so you started off an idiot and just kept on that train… how’s it working for you?
and hudson: “”"your contempt for military service, except for powers’ military service, showed you to be anti-american scumbags of the first order.”"”"
How has anyone who supported Powers had contempt for military service? Splett’s the one here bashing all the military.
Are you drunk again?
Sometimes sarcasm is lost on people.
Let me spell this out. I don’t do charity work and I don’t plan on starting. If that makes me a bad person, I’m a bad person. I just don’t have the time or the energy for it.
This is apparently a horrible pox on my character that removes my right to criticize a guy who got paid handsomely to do charity work for kids in a warzone. Explain to me how Jon Powers collecting a paycheck to do charity is noble and selfless.
And Hudson’s right. You’ll all jerk off about how much you love the troops when a veteran says what you want them to say. But how many of you are espousing how great John McCain is because he fought in a bullshit war we shouldn’t have been in? You can get all Sean Hannity about my patriotism all you want, but lets be real here. If serving your country in the military is of this paramount importance to you, you’d all be voting for McCain.
I also find it amusing everyone thinks I’m a miserable America hater. Just because I think my country’s priorities are ass backwards doesn’t mean I don’t still love it at the end of the day. I criticize it because I love it. Being a citizen is much like following a sports team. When times are bad, you’re suppose to hate the front office until it changes. If you keep supporting it out of blind loyalty to the team, the product on the field will continue to suck.
Who ever attacked McCain for serving? I haven’t seen those comments on this site before? McCain served honorably and should be commended for his actions. No one is saying being a soldier makes you qualified, but it does garner respect and admiration. Do I respect and admire McCain for his service? Yes. Do I like his ideas for the future of America? No. But I’m not going to call him a “murdering douchebag” in the process.
and Splett you’ve been proved wrong about Powers War Kids numerous times. He only collected $ 15,000 over a 2 year period for working on the project – which included him having to travel back to Iraq as a civilian (something that is not cheap).
I’d love to know where & when you “spin” so I can come hurl these insults in person.
and to reiterate your owns words – yes, yes you are a bad person.
Yep. 15,000 from war kids.
Then another 60,000 from the organization that founded war kids.
That would be 75,000 for his charity work with vets and kids.
Noble dude.
God, Splett, you are just a sad ass, mean idiot. Been hanging at Hudson’s house too much.
So, by your argument, anybody who works for a not for profit should do it out of the kindness of their hearts? Because the CEO’s of Make-A-Wish, American Cancer Society, MDA, JDRF etc., might beg to differ as they collect their paychecks that are often significantly higher than Powers was. Secondly, because they get paid for these noble and difficult jobs, they shouldn’t be able to use the experiences that they garner as qualifications for future jobs?
And finally, why is it even an issue that he made whatever he made as the VP for Policy at VVA?
Again, I maintain that if you write your stories in the “small community paper” with the same desire for truth that you do in condemning Powers, I imagine you’ll be working 3 jobs and only have one day off to watch the Bills…for a very long time. Maybe Hudson can get you a job at the Reporter. They aren’t encumbered by things like truth or facts over there.
Yea, you can’t get over the fact some dude you went to high school with lost an election and I’m the idiot….
Splett- you’ve outdone yourself! You sound like a bonafide communist. How many tabs of ecstacy are you popping while you “spin” your happy hardcore? Obviously you must be sharing some with Mike Hudson. Talk about a couple of douchebags. You’re just bitter and frankly I think you may be jealous of Jon Powers credentials and good looks.
Haha – yes. Splett are you saying the people who work for the American Heart Association, the one’s that organize business to participate in the Heart Start hart walk (like the one recently in Buffalo that raice over 1/2 a million dollars for a one day event) are terribly people?
Because there average salary is $ 55 – $ 75 K per year. Powers made that in 2 years.
You must be evil, because you help the community as a h.s. sports writer and still make a paycheck, right?
Splatt – A. I didn’t go to high school with him. Never worked with him. Not related to him. Didn’t know him until January 08. Again, don’t let facts get in the way of your writing.
B. I am completely over it and on to the next thing. I just don’t like liars like you and Hudson beating up on anyone.
c. Yes, you are an idiot. A mean, angry, small minded, jealous idiot. The good news is, you are not alone. Hudson is one too. Maybe you guys could unionize.
The WNY-IWU (Western New York Idiot Writers Union).
Hudson can be vice president and Splett president.
wizards cousin,
started off as an idiot and kept on that train?
seeing as your beloved candidate lost and abandoned you, how would you say things have worked out for you???
InTheLoop – don’t you have an Alice canvass going on right now? She pays you so I would suggest doing your work. Then again, we are talking about the Kryzan campaign. That team got lucky in the primary and now they are clueless as to how much work it actually takes to be taken seriously.
Intheloop – I feel pretty good. My candidate is making a difference in every campaign across the country.
Your woman Kryzan is on the phones raising money, taking pac money, and not visiting the disctrict like she should be.
How will it feel with Kryzan is crushed by lee in the general and she realizes she completely fucked the Democratic party out of what could have been a winable seat?
Or how does it feel knowing you weren’t smart enough to tell Kryzan about the Rennaisance Square project in Rochester is before the debate?
Clueless as to how much work it actually takes to be taken seriously? I think 42% of Democrats speaks for itself, loser.
I’d ask you little Powers Platooners to stop crying, but like I said, I’m sure it’s hard to get over your cult of personality fanaticism. In fact, if you were real Democrats (not converts like Powers), we wouldn’t be having this conversation because you would be 100% behind Alice.
On that note, who are The Wizards supporting in November?
Bedenko, you fat fuck, are you censoring me?
Hey, intheloop – apparently not.
And I invite you to email me at buffalopundit[at]gmail.com so that we can arrange a time for you to say that to my face. Thanks so much.
I am a convert, like Powers. Grew up in a Clarence, Republican household and realized it wasn’t the way. Went and changed over to Democrat. Does that make me less of a Democrat? I’ll be voting for Alice, but even if all of the 3600+ voters that pulled the lever for Powers come out for Alice, it isn’t going to make a big difference in the general. If she doesn’t get out of the office soon and start generating some excitement she is going to get rolled over. And I firmly believe if Jack Davis wasn’t in the race then, Powers would be running around the district getting votes, not pointing out in the debate that he couldn’t do that because he was stuck in the office raising money all the time. Powers managed alot more district time while raising alot more money.
Alice will get my vote and nothing else. She sucks.
Intheloop –
37 % of of the Dem’s voted for Powers… that’s not to far off from Alice’s 41 %. You think Alice can win the line without those 37 % pulling the lever for her? Why should I support Alice again?
Your comments are only going to make me pull the lever for someone else. How do you think Alice would feel about that? Calling me a loser and BP a “fat fuck” really don’t go along with Kryzan’s “i’m not negative” slogan. Thanks for proving Alice and her entire political camp are a bunch of lying idiots.
As of now Powers is still on the WFP line. I saw on the blogs (here and Albany Project) that his request went in to take him off of the ballot, but haven’t heard if it’s official yet. If he’s still on there, I’m voting for him.
I’ve been a registered Democrat since I was 18, not a convert, but I still don’t feel that Alice represents my interests in Washington.
Also, I feel because of her strong “I’m a Democrat and Republicans suck” attitude she won’t be able to come to any bi-partisan solution, leaving America right where it was – two parties being too stubborn to give anything to the other side. America gets screwed in that scenario.
I don’t know if Lee will do that either, but I know Alice won’t. Lee’s at least trying to win over voters like me… what has Alice done?
Why haven’t I heard or seen Alice in my neighborhood? Powers was there 2 – 3 times during the primary race… and he raised a truck load of money.
If Alice spends all this time raising money, how do I know she won’t do that when she’s in office so she can garuntee a second term?
So go ahead…insult me again Kryzan employee, and let’s see how many votes that will get you.
