Rebutting the WSJ on Bills Fans

Dave Staba sends along his latest Artvoice piece, which is a response to a typically ignorant and offhanded comment about Buffalo and Buffalonians in the national media – in this instance the Wall Street Journal. A “journamalist” came to Orchard Park, saw some people behaving like idiots, and therefore concluded that the Bills were…

a team that has struggled to control some of the worst-behaving fans in all of sports,

Staba, using the same anecdotal methodology as the Wall Street Journal’s reporter, walked around the Ralph and concludes,

• The Bills have some of the most Dutch-sounding fans in all of sports;

• those same fans have an unhealthy obsession with Will Ferrell (Hans was wearing a T-shirt promoting the actor-comedian’s 2004 tour de force Anchorman);

• they favor very big hats.

    look, i don’t care that people are ignorant about all the great stuff about buffalo. i’m about to head to dc and will enjoy time with friends but come on. traffic? over-crowding? out of control prices/mortgages? 60-80+ hour work weeks? the overly competitiveness with the joneses? the extra car for the nanny or au pair? SPARE ME. the joke’s on them. i have a nice house that’s not a million dollars just to get an extra bedroom and a yard the kids can run in. i have 4 minute commute. family is here and we are able to be close.

    oh, and this guy has to be a douchebag anyhow – he works at the wsj.

  3. I just worked at the last game as a volunteer. All the fans were very nice and polite even when the lights went out. We got lots of tips for our school.

    @wsj…”a team that has struggled to control some of the worst-behaving fans in all of sports…”

    That guy obviously has never been to a sporting event…any sporting event…in Philadelphia. They may not match the arrest records for Bills’ home games, but I suspect it’s because the police there just don’t bother.

    The WSJ reporter obviously has never attended a Raiders game in Oakland. Wearing the opposing team’s colors.

    I went to one Raiders game there and I liken it to San Quentin with a halftime show.

    See, in Philadelphia, we are still proud of this reputation, even if it’s only half earned. Yes, some are eagerly awaiting Game 3 of the World Series to see if any Tampa Bay fans 1) show or 2) wear their team jersey.

    I’ve been to a Sabres game, wearing a Flyers jersey, and while I did get booed, by the next section, the Buffaloians around me just felt sorry for me and my misguided loyalty.

    I’m from Buffalo and I agree Buffalo Bills fans are Total IDIOTS that need to GET A LIFE and GROW UP!!! I can’t wait for them to move to Toronto so we can get rid of ALL the Buffalo Bills CRAP forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
