Rumors are rampant that Hillary Clinton is under consideration for a cabinet position – possibly Secretary of State. If selected, the scuttlebutt continues, a certain South Buffalo Congressman may very well be promoted to the United States Senate.

It seems improbable to me that the NY Democratic party would favor someone from WNY for the Senate, given the amount of “juice” historically exerted by downstate solons. That said, one could hardly avoid doing better than Clinton has done with respect to the 200,000 upstate jobs she promised in 2000; she would not be missed in these parts.
Hope you’re right.
Higgins was asked if he would accept the seat if Hillary were appointed, when he was speaking at Canisius Monday night…he seemed fairly stuck on serving his House term…however, it wouldn’t be the first time someone from the NY Congressional delegation has been wishy-washy on their ambition…
Good riddance to that carpet-bagger! She has done absolutely NOTHING for the people of Western New York.
Trading one ass for another is not progress.
Well, if it’s not State I hope it’s Att Gen. or some other cabinet post.
It’d be nice to get a new senator for NY.
Why is the “Change” candidate surrounding himself with so very many Clintonistas?
Quoth John Henke:
Why is the “Change” candidate surrounding himself with so very many Clintonistas?
So as not to make the very same mistakes that Clinton made in his first term? Navigating the halls of power and asserting the power of the Presidency is a learned trait. A task which Podesta and Emanuel are quite adept.
The wack job racists would be sent into a real tizzy if we have a black man, a Jewish man, and a woman as the three most powerful people in the world.
Out of curiosity, I looked it up. US Senators from upstate NY since 1900:
Charles Goodell – R, Jamestown (1968-71, appointed by Rockefeller to fill term of Robert Kennedy);
Irving Ives – R, Norwich (1947-59);
James Mead – D, Buffalo (1938-47);
James Wadsworth – R, Geneseo (1915-27).
That covers the century. We’re due–almost as much as the Chicago Cubs.
Traditionally, the party appartus would look to the Mayor of NYC or a powerful downstate congressman or state legislature leader. The options downstate for this position are slim, Higgins stands out as the leader based on his youth, bipartisan record and community support upstate.
Unless they look to Andrew Cuomo or Tom Suozzi (both with governor aspirations), there aren’t many other options.
I would prefer Hillary to John Kerry.
Which “mistakes?”
even if they appoint from upstate, it’d be hard to win a primary for reelection.
When Hillary was going to be President the buzz was Byron Brown or David Paterson. It is Paterson’s call to make; particularly if they appoint a White person to fill Obama’s seat then Brown, the second most important African American in the state, may have a strong shot at this.
A broader point: If we wanted a cabinet full of Clintonistas, wouldn’t we have nominated Hillary? Is Barak just supposed to be a black, male Hillary? No. I think the movement that propelled him to the nomination was largely people–like you–who didn’t want Clinton redux. But now all the sudden you defend Clinton redux? It makes no sense.
Clinton’s “mistake” was moving the center righward. Obama is poised to do the same damn thing. If we are serious about change in this country, electing Obama was a necessary, but very fucking far from sufficient, condition.
“Unless they look to Andrew Cuomo or Tom Suozzi (both with governor aspirations), there aren’t many other options.”
Why not Slaughter? She’s from upstate and has a pretty good record on things.
Why not Slaughter? She’s 80 and promoting her would leave a HUGE leadership void in the House.
I think Hillary would be better as Secetary of Health and Human Services or Housing and Urban Development but I imagine that either is too low profile for her. But having brian Higgins appointed to serve her term in the Senate would be very good for our region.
