   I agree with you on the timing of the text, Alan. They tried to be a bit too cute, the pick got leaked, and they paid the price.

   I disagree with you on the pick, though. I’ve been down on Biden since he was exposed as a plagiarist in ‘88. Not only did he lift another politician’s speech, but it was revealed that he was found guilty of plagiarism in school. These charges didn’t resurface in his recent presidential bid because nobody took him seriously. Now that he’s on the ticket, watch out! I can see the Republicans trying to link his plagiarism to the speeches Obama lifted earlier this year from Deval Patrick and I believe someone else.

   I thought Bill Richardson or Evan Bayh would have been better picks. Although I will concede that the Democrats have no locked up Delaware’s 3 electoral votes.

   That may be the case, Mike, but the plagiarism (see “academic dishonesty”) occured while he was a law student at Syracuse. The folks in the Dukakis campaign must have thought it was significant, as they’re the ones who leaked it to the media. I’m not sure whether they knew about the gum chewing incident at the time.

    I was sure it would come at Prime Time Friday night. You know, so the News would break in during some totally popular TV show like, er, I don’t know. Whatever people who watch TV watch on a Friday night. Like today’s Love Boat or Three’s Company.

    Biden is worth the pick for his Rudy G. comment during an early debate. I’m still laughing about that one. (Maybe if I watched TV, I’d be laughing about something else, but I’m not.)

    Biden was the best pick Obama could have made. Biden is one of the few national Democrats who is “serious.” I’ll put Bill Richradson in the caragory as well, but not Clinton, Edwards, or, more importantly, Obama.

    Biden has thought about issues, researched and studied, and then come to logical, defensible, positions. I may not agree with 80% of them, but I respect then, for being consistent and well thought out.

    Obama is the antithesis of seriousness. He is either for ephemeral “change” and “we are the one’s we’ve been waiting for,” whatever that means, or he is for poorly thought out, often pandering, policy positions (widnfall taxes on oil companies, dropping secret ballots at union organizational votes).

    Obama needs Biden – politically, excellent choice.

    I still hope they lose, but Biden makes it palatable if the inevitable comes.

    As soon as I saw you said the text message was near 3am, I thought of an explanation that fits perfectly:

    It looks to me like a deliberate dig at Hillary and her “3am” ads during the primaries. I’m not necessarily saying Obama or Michelle ordered the specific hour of the text message. But maybe a staff member with lingering hostility toward Hillary chose the time.

    Has anyone yet offered a better interpretation? I should mail this to Rush and Drudge and see what they think. It’s a trivial thing for sure, but no more so than the “number of houses” so-called gaffe.

    Joe saw himself joining the ranks of John Edwards, Joe Lieberman, Lloyd Bentsen,Ms Ferraro and Fritz Mondale, and thought it would be a nice group to add his name to. And it will be.
