Bisons to Associate with NY Mets?

That’s what the Daily News and Buffalo News say:

It looks like Buster Bison is getting set to greet Mr. Met in Dunn Tire Park.

Deals can’t be officially negotiated until Thursday but all signs are pointing toward the New York Mets becoming Buffalo’s new parent in 2009.

The Mets are leaving New Orleans and the New York Daily News is reporting they expect to sign a deal with the Bisons later this week that will be announced in a news conference here next Monday. Sources confirm to The Buffalo News the Mets are the Bisons’ top choice although the team denied that Monday.

PLEASE make this happen. I am a huge Mets fan. This would be great

  2. mike says:

I hope the Buffalo card isn’t just being played to up the fee’s from the Syracuse ball club. The Mets have a history of building teams from drafting, unlike the yankees who will just steal away player from other teams with big carrots.

  3. Tom says:

I hope that this is not true about the Mets. We are used to winning after being with Cleveland for 14 years. I’ve heard the Mets triple A farm team is aweful. Last big win for the Mets AAA team was 1986?

  4. mike says:

The Mets AAA team lost the PCL championship finals last year and The Tides have won the Governors’ Cup, the championship of the International League, 5 times, and played in the championship series 9 times.

    1971 – Lost to Rochester
    1972 – Defeated Louisville
    1975 – Defeated Syracuse
    1982 – Defeated Rochester
    1983 – Defeated Richmond
    1985 – Defeated Columbus
    1987 – Lost to Columbus
    1988 – Lost to Rochester
    1995 – Lost to Ottawa
And now for your beloved Buffalo Bisons: The Bisons have won the Governors’ Cup, the championship of the IL, 6 times, including the inaugural Cup, and played in the championship series 10 times.

    1933 – Defeated Rochester
    1936 – Defeated Baltimore
    1938 – Lost to Newark
    1947 – Lost to Syracuse
    1949 – Lost to Montréal
    1957 – Defeated Miami
    1961 – Defeated Rochester
    1998 – Defeated Durham
    2002 – Lost to Durham
    2004 – Defeated Richmond

So I guess tom is McCain correct, but at least in my life time the Mets have had the better AAA record.

  5. Jon Splett says:

    Wow.

The Mets must be pushing hard for this because all the talk I heard all season was Toronto was going to be the team. I still think they make more sense from a marketing point of view, I know I’d drive up north to see former Bisons play but I sure as hell won’t drive to NYC for that, but I guess the attraction of having some games on SNY is probably a big selling point.

  6. Ashley says:

The Mets are not considered to have better talent in the minor leagues given the need to win every year, they are not likely to keep that young talent around.

  7. Randy says:

Maybe Buffalo is playing this up to up the fees from Toronto. Let’s face it; I think everyone knows the Jays don’t want to be in New Orleans. But their Triple A record for the past 31 years with Syracuse isn’t that good. I’m sure Bison’s management would need some kind of commitment from Toronto to get a couple of good free agents. Let Syracuse have the Mets…Let’s go Jays!

  8. mike says:

The mets minor league is loaded with talent and we would not need to have some 40 year old DH on the roster. Can’t we all agree that the DH rule is a farce? Its like adding 4 strikes, baseball line up is 9 people not 10. If you want to go that route you might as well have 9 hitter and 9 fielders like football. Forgetabout Toronto, those fans don’t even support the major league team and you think they will drive to buffalo? Well maybe you are right, the beer is cheaper.

  9. Jon Splett says:

No, we cannot agree the DH rule is a farce Grandpa.

There’s a reason the marque franchises play in the American League. It’s a more entertaining game to watch. Accept the fact that the double switch is boring already. If we can agree on anything, it’s that pinch hitting utility infielders are not fun to watch.

And it’s not just about bring Toronto fans here, it’s about being able to follow a guy here then take the hour and a half drive up north to watch him make a big league debut. Or the chance at weaseling a few Jays games at Dunn Tire Park every year when Ted Rogers poaches the Bills from us.

What do they Mets bring us? More obnoxious Long Island frat boys from UB at Bisons games? The Mets have next to no presence here and I can’t see that changing even with the affiliation. At least with the Blue Jays, there’s some sense of regionalism associated with it.

  10. mike says:

I have two grand children you young whipper snapper, we have lots of long islanders here at NU too. But I guess I am old enough to remember that pitchers were the most talented hitters on the team before the DH. We would never had Babe Ruth if they had the DH back then and watching over the hill hitters extend their careers is very ugly.

  11. sayvanderlay says:

I’ve been hoping for this for months. For my own selfish reasons — I’ve been a huge Mets fan all my life.
The other reason being – the relationship between Buffalonians and Torontonians is going to be shaky as Toronto becomes more enamored with the Bills. It’s bad enough we have to see the Leafs fans a few times a year. Let’s just leave it at that1

  12. Tuco says:

It will be a shame to lose Cleveland as the parent organization. The Indians-Bisons partnership has been great for both parties. However I understand why the Indians are moving their Triple-A franchise to Columbus. I know there are a lot more Indians fans down I-71 than Buffalo, which is a Yankees and Mets town (for the most part).

The Mets and Jays are both wins for Buffalo, and I’m sure Buffalo is very attractive to both teams. I know early on Washington was also floated as a possibility, and that would have been awful.

  13. hank says:

So Mike–You work at Niagara U? That would certainly say a few wheel-barrow loads about you.

  14. mike says:

Yes hank, niagara kids are very wastefull and i find lots bottles around the campus.

  15. David Sprague says:

So it’s the Mets!! I was hoping for Toronto all along, but this sounds excellent!! I really like the fact that Buffalo is the top choice of the different MLBB teams.
