Here’s how New York’s WCBS described today’s carnival sideshow called “Albany”:
As incredible as it may seem, pictures obtained by CBS 2 HD are of the Democratic senators who locked themselves inside their chamber so they could be “first in” for Gov. David Paterson’s special session. The pictures, shot through the window of a Senate door, seem to show that it was all about taking possession of the podium.
Yonkers Sen. Andrea Stewart Cousins is seen standing there to prevent the Republicans from taking over. The move came shortly after Democrats said talks of establishing a bi-partisan operating agreement fell through because a Republican coalition insisted the Senate president be Bronx Sen. Pedro Espada.
“We do not concede that Pedro Espada is the Senate president. We have offered to put aside the issues of whether the president of the Senate is Sen. [Malcolm] Smith or Sen. Espada,” said Sen. Eric Schneiderman, D-Manhattan.
What happened next was equally incredible. With the Democrats in their seats, the Republicans marched in and tried to take the podium. They were rebuffed, so they held a session form the well of the chamber and passed dozens of bills by acclamation.
The odd thing was when Republican senators start the session with the pledge of allegiance. The Democrats didn’t stand to participate and when one tried to stand, he was pulled down.
After the Republicans gaveled out, the Democrats gaveled in their special session. The problem was Sen. Smith said they couldn’t proceed because they didn’t have the governor’s bills.
The system’s broken. Start fixing it by removing these petulant cretins from Albany. They’re not Democrats or Republicans. They’re the Doodyhead and Poopypants parties fighting over who gets the better cot during naptime. Send them all home, pull all of their pay, abolish their chamber and positions, and don’t forget to rescind all of their pensions.

I’m just waiting for Governor Paterson to completely blow his top…
As I recall amending the state constitution is a two year long process, and would include the legislature voting to hold a constitutional convention. I’ll look it up another time, but as things stand right now these characters can’t even vote on the pork barrel items that they believe justify their current existence. Voting on something as major as structural reform seems pretty unlikely.
About the only path I can think of that might make it happen would be a movement to replace all of the present incumbents with members who are pledged to vote for a constitutional convention. It’s a lead-pipe cinch Darth Volker wouldn’t vote that way, and he’s Daniel Webster compared to some of these guys– a complete top to bottom purge is what’s needed.
The state senate really is a vestigial organ. The original idea was that there’d be a state senator for each county, but that turned out to be unconstitutional so they reformed it to make representation proportional to population. Since that’s already how the Assembly works, the formation principal of the body is irrelevant. The senate is supposed to have a role in appointments (which is why it can be called into special session without the Assembly), but it seems to me that the Assembly could handle that chore. G-d knows the Assembly doesn’t work any harder than it has to, and only looks good relative to the senate.
while i can apprecaite the sentiment of getting rid of these worthless bums, doing so would only make it easier for more bullshit law to get passed, the state would become a permanent puppet of the democratic party, even more so than it already is…
practically speaking, it would be a net negative…sheldon silver would be more powerful than the governor, any governor
Well Described Alan.
Any member of a governmental body that doesn’t have enough respect for the flag of our Nation to stand up and recite the Pledge of Allegiance—No matter WHAT bee is in their bonnet, needs to be taken out behind the Assembly building and given a swift kick in the ass. And maybe a few more shots for good measure.
As for the Picture of Perez —-He’s just being a liberal. Get in an argument with one and before it’s over, they’ll call you a faggot—even if they champion homosexual rights, or in this case, even if they’re homosexual themselves.
The Pledge of Allegiance is either a prayer– and therefore unconstitutional– or a crypto-loyalty oath, and also unconstitutional. It has no place in government.
And if the failure to recite a bit of doggerel is all that upsets you about this farce, your priorities are so misplaced it’s tragic.
