Poison & Def Leppard

I stumbled on Jeff Miers’ review of last night’s show at Darien Lake, and laughed at this bit:

Sadly, Poison also performed. Calling the band’s set atrocious would be going easy on them. The band rode the wave of glammed-out pop-metal acts that seemed to be lurking behind every corner in the latter ’80s, and managed to earn a rabid audience based on its pale reworkings of classic rock and metal tunes.

Many of these were in evidence on Friday, from the moment the band aped Aerosmith with opener “Look What the Cat Dragged In,” through the Cheap Trick “She’s Tight” to “Talk Dirty To Me.” Reality TV star and frontman Brett Michaels strutted about the stage to the audible appreciation of the female portion of the audience, and grabbed an acoustic guitar to lead the band through the country-leaning ballad, “Something to Believe In.”

It was all truly awful, from the live sound, to the cheesy refried Kiss effects. Happily, Def Leppard wasted little time taking the stage after Poison’s merciful cessation.

Negative reviews of things are always so much more entertaining than the positive ones.

    Yeah…I bet Jeff Miers didn’t get laid last night the way Brett Michaels could have….lol. When it comes to a choice of writing a prissy review or getting a Hummer from a groupie in the Hummer, it’s sort of a no-brainer who comes out on top….. There is the real humor in “reviews”……

    Wow; after almost 30 years of writing about music, I see that the same stupid cliches are still around, including about reviewers not getting laid and being jealous and so on.

    When people talk to me about things I wrote that they still remember, about 90 percent of them are negatives reviews. Why something is bad to me or any reviewer is vital and must be communicated.

    If you think that Jeff had getting laid or blown in his mind as he wrote the reviewer, your are clueless, and I have no idea what hair length has to do with anything.

    Never said his hair length had anything to do with his reviews or anything else. I was just voicing my opinion that a 50 (or thereabouts) year old man doesn’t need to look like a rocker simply because he writes about them. Why so defensive ?

    @Brian You would be my General of Generalization. Nice work. Unlike the Liberals like Ted Kennedy and Barnie Frank, our assholes at least have the decency to commit political apoptosis.

    @Pundit Your ‘award winning blog’ posts are your biggest examples of ‘positive review posting’ despite . It’s such a great example of ‘do as I say, not as I do’ in action. A cute harmless one too…but great nonetheless.

    Wow. From a bad concert revue by Jeff Miers – a nice fellow and walking music encyclopaedia (just like Kevin J , above). To Barney Frank, Ted Kennedy and, I’m assuming, how a liberal’s ideology blinds them to the awesomesauce that is Poison. Eh?

    It couldn’t just be that Poison sucked and was blown off the stage by Def Leppard?

    The best part of these reviews from Jeff is when he then writes a column on the hate-mail that’s been landing in his inbox since Saturday morning.

    i think the worst part is that they didn’t refund tickets when cheap trick (far and away the best band on the show) cancelled.

    I didn’t realize I was that defensive, Haterade, I just don’t see what hair length has to do with anything. FWIW, shortly before my 8-year sentence left me years ago, she made the remark, “you’re just an old rocker, and that’s all you’ll ever be.” I took it as a compliment.

    And just what does a rocker look like? Jeff and I look nothing alike.

    Poison sucked because THEY ALWAYS DID—Just another grind out power love songs in mascara and rouge and moussed up hair band to a bunch of late 80’s teen girls. Any 18 year old girl in 89 would be embarrased of them at age 38.

    Def Leppard could blow Poison off the stage 20 years ago—no reason why they wouldn’t do it now.

    Saw Cheap Trick last year in Charlotte, and they were as good as they were when they played a USO show I saw in Okinawa in 1983. Y’all missed out on a good performance since they weren’t there. They played last year with Journey and Heart—an outstanding show.
