   Do the residents of Erie County feel better off with a hand-picked candidate who will work with the County Executive? Or, the current comptroller with a history of animosity toward the CE? That is the question to be answered Tuesday.

   I enjoy the give and take of partisan government and have grown to admire politicians who with experience learn to accommodate and compromise their way to serve their constituents. As Mencken observed it is the best show in town.

   Earlier this year I noted that like most businessman, CE Chris Collins grew frustrated with the democratic process and sought to develop a monopoly to guarantee results and ensure his agenda was met. To a student of government it is fascinating to watch how often “The Prince,” written 500 years ago is replicated in reality.

   I noted the CE recruit and evidently helped finance opponents to enemy legislators, even appoint one to a neutral position for which she was eminently unqualified, the Kadet campaign and his TV ads appeared to complete the spectacle.

   Now the truth should be known- most accountants are not as exciting as Indiana Jones. But in the Kadet TV ads we have a rather wooden candidate reduced to a two dimensional cardboard cut-out posed in front of books and file cabinets with some quotes apparently drawn mostly from a guidebook on how accountants are supposed to sound.

   But my hope is that if elected, and all the financial investment, Kadet becomes a true elected official and refuses to join seamless government.

   Alfreda Slominski always criticized Ed Rutkowski and Dennis Gorski. Always. From audits to reviews to specific incidents, she was always commenting and criticizing the County Executive of the day. And she is pointed to as the penultimate example of how a comptroller should behave. I will take an independent comptroller who criticizes over a compliant comptroller, like Nancy Naples, who supported Joel Giambra and remained silent while the County’s finances crumbled in 2004-2005. I note for the record that Naples and her husband are major Kadet fundraisers and supporters.

   When have you losers ever said caaaa-ching around the pennysaver office – when a pepsi can blew in the door? What is the headline this week, another caper about how the shut-ins didn’t get their free weekly? Riveting stuff there Perry White.
