The hiring of Pedro Espada’s son as assistant to the regional manager the state senat’s deputy director for intergovernmental relations – a $120,000 job – has prompted an ethics investigation because of anti-nepotism rules.
Remember that Espada and Monserrate are strongly supported by Tom Golisano’s Responsible New York, proving that it clearly isn’t.

Let’s also not forget the role (ahem) played by former Erie County Fiscal Stability Authority Chairman Anthony Baynes and his son A.J. in the Senate “coup.” They proudly stood with Pigeon, Espada and Golisano and claimed credit for their role in that mess and even boasted about it in interviews (and photos) on Joe Illuzzi’s pay-to-play site and with local media. Now, those same individuals are running Tim Howard’s campaign and serving as major donors to Philip Kadet’s campaign. It gives one pause for thought.
I watched those antics and strategies of Colisano and Espada with growing horror in January. I have studied the growing self destructive democratic process in this state for over fifty years and in now in 2009 a billionaire with his skilled lackey and especially corrupt confederates the final harm was done.
I really thought the pits were reached in the past ten years with Bruno, Silver and Pataki demonstrating cynical disregard for the Public Interest by being totally un-apologetic about annual selection of legislation they favored. But in January we had even this tattered remnant of a democratic government set aside for money and personal power.
To me the worse part of that sad episode was the fact that 58 other Senators duly elected to represent particular New York Citizens and sworn to uphold allegiance to the state and nation fearfully sat on their hands through the entire escapade. Even now that spineless bunch who never missed a paycheck have not done one single thing to correct what was done and punish wrong doing at any level.
In fact one of the most cynical of the bunch Espada continues to to manipulate things for his personal empire building while the rest sit on their hands and moan softly…very softly.
