Powers’ Law

If you’re a political candidate, and you get a call from the Buffalo News’ Bob McCarthy, and he informs you that he’s going to run a story the next day that accuses you of horrible moral turpitude (e.g., you stole money from Iraqi orphans or you’re a racist), you absolutely cannot issue a limp rebuttal and pretend like it will all just blow over.

You have to address the allegation head on, strongly, to take control of the narrative as soon as possible, otherwise your silence/tepid response will be interpreted as a concession of the accusation’s truth.

Not that it was necessarily going to change the outcome, but Michele Iannello broke this law with the WFP/racism charges of last week.  Yes, it may have hurt her chances last night, but more importantly it probably put an end to her career in politics, full stop.

On the other hand, little dumb stuff like, e.g.,  property taxes paid late is ok to ignore until it blows over.

alan, you’ll have every right to say i stuck up for him once and call me a dumbass for it, but bob mccarthy is the biggest piece of shit i’ve known in the wny journalism racket. politicians need to remember that this guy is not their friend, that regardless how friendly he comes across he’s about to do a number on them and make their mothers cry. this, in fact, is what bob mccarthy does for a living, and he discraces the job description of “reporter” by claiming to be one. he is vicious, vile, filthy bile dredged from the depths of love canal and spewed across the front page of the buffalo news, making everyone who reads the thing dirty by simply picking it up. he is human garbage.

Bob McCarthy is a lazy person who gets tips from people, and he decides what’s politically newsworthy and writes about it. A computer program could be set up to do the same thing automatically. So, when a politico wants to smear an enemy, he can call up McCarthy, who will follow through on it, and invariably writes up a facile “he said-she said” type story where the objective truth is mysteriously overlooked.

The funny thing for me is that when Jon Powers was the target of his political enemies, you lapped it up, viciously attacked Powers, and praised McCarthy to the Gods. But when the shoe was on the other foot, well, one just needs to look at the comment directly above pauldub’s.

When someone gets blindsided by a Bob McCarthy call that is based on an enemy’s half-truths and innuendo, the best practice would be to tell McCarthy that it’s a bunch of fucking lies and if he dares to print a word of it, his access to other candidates or politicians will be obliterated, and respond strongly – not wimpishly.

There’s a damn good reason why certain politicians don’t return my emails. And I don’t give a shit – if they don’t want me to get their side of the story, then fuck their side of the story.

Yeah, but she still should have stepped up. Pretty Simple.

  3. Byron says:

Yes, I remember well Hudson’s weeks-long adolescent tantrum that Powers “stole money from Iraqi war orphans” !!!!! – a vicious lie.

  4. mike hudson says:

alan, the thing about mccarthy is that these sorts of hatchet jobs are his specialty. he does little, if anything, else. twenty inches on the front page sunday about a possible misdemeanor infraction that may or may not have happened two years ago? please.

and byron, powers was an asshole, like mccarthy.

  5. Byron says:

I could point out what a lying hypocrite you are, but why bother? Everyone can see for themselves.

  6. mike hudson says:

and no one can say anything about you, byron, as you lack the stones to sign your real name.

  7. Byron says:

Wow that was totally unexpected! “You’re a fucking moron” or a book plug will be next I’m sure.

  8. Byron says:

As to the post itself, I agree – when a low-life like McCarthy or Hudson slimes you, you should fight back. I remember Powers actually came on this site and crushed Russy like a cockroach; it’s a shame he didn’t do the same to Hudson and his “you stole from orphans” bullshit.

  9. Byron says:

Per Hudson, Jon Powers is a fraud, creep, charlatan and thief, but Steve Pigeon is one of the finest people he’s ever met. Kind of sums up his worldview, doesn’t it?

  10. mike hudson says:

i’ve never said anything nice about steve pigeon, though i do think bob mccarthy, mike beebe, len lenihan and that dipshit sasha could be sued under the civil rico statute for conspiracy to defame and deprive him of his ability to make an honest living.

  11. Byron says:

Nice try, but you said, right on this site, that Steve Pigeon was one of the finest men you knew.

  12. mike hudson says:

well, he’s certainly a better man than you, byron. there’s something about a guy who doesn’t hide behind some pussy pseudonym, maybe. or the fact that he never stole money from iraqi orphans. or went to my hometown of cleveland ohio and called brave police officers ugly names before pleading “no contest” on the criminal charge leveled against. yes byron, the more i think about it, if i didn’t say it before i’ll say it now: steve pigeon is one of the finest men i ever knew.

  13. Byron says:

I figured you’d reverse course and double down on Pigeon and Powers. Thanks!
