Taking their shots

The media has gone pretty gaga about Vice President Cheney’s unfortunate shooting accident.

While I understand that anything having to do with a person of such international stature is newsworthy, I am really having a hard time understanding the  whoopla over this unfortunate incident.

There are so many talking heads out there blabbing-on about how the lack of immediate full disclosure concerning the shooting is somehow indicative of the Bush Administration’s overall lying and evasive attitude.

I, however, think it’s something much more basic than that.

Let’s take the whole incident to a personal level.  If friends invited me to go shooting at their private estate I’d probably go, even if I didn’t have the proper licensing.  My reason being what difference could it possibly make when hunting on private land?

And I would hazard to guess that many hunters and fishers have done the same when presented with such an opportunity

Then if I did, by some terrible twist of fate, shoot the host, I don’t think I’d be telling anyone about it.  Nor, if I were a public figure, would I be overly anxious to call a press conference about the whole mess.

No doubt, in the current media atmosphere that envelops our world, the VP should have put out some sort of official statement on Saturday.

However, I really don’t think that by trying to quietly squeak by this incredibly embarrassing and now life threatening accident Cheney is proving his disregard for the American demand for immediate information on all issues at all times.

I think the guy is just trying to survive a really idiotic moment in his life.

I heard Jim Rhome (Rome?) say that Cheney belonged to different NRA–Not Really Aiming.

Perhaps a few cocktails were involved? A beer for lunch–but lunch was at 5 pm and around the time of the incident. It should come as no great surprise that Cheney and staff would try their best to cover this up–they have done so with bigger isssue–Halliburton, anyone???
