Trade Deadline Mega Live Blog

Well this is going to be a lot of fun. Any posts about trade news and other things will go below this one. Feel free to join us, we should have a lot of people chatting with us today. Thanks to all the other sites that are helping us out today, it’s going to be a lot of fun going through the chaos with you guys.

We also have a number of Twitter feeds automatically updating in there so we get the very latest from accredited news sources. No Eklund anywhere in sight here today. Here are a few resources you may want use throughout the day:

NHL Numbers: A great place for a look at other team’s salary cap and individual player cap hits.

Hockey Reference: An easy-to-use site for player and team stats.

Behind the Net: Great advanced statistics site, if you want to really get involved today.

NHL Standings: Pretty straightforward, really.

Globe on Hockey: Wherever James Mirtle calls home, you should as well. Here are two things you’ll want to keep checking, 1) a prediction of buyers and sellers and 2) a look at the 90+ Points or Bust chart.

The Trade Deadline Mega Live Blog Cometh

by Ryan

Last year the NHL trade deadline was one of the most sucessful days in the brief history of the Roost. We didn’t get any links from anyone, but a lot of people showed up for the liveblog that we put on and it was fun to follow all the chaos in real time.

We wanted to do the same this year, but a few things have complicated that. The first one that comes to mind is Twitter, which is a chaotic mess of information and opinions that is absurd yet absolutely necessary for breaking news. It just so happens that breaking news is pretty much what Deadline Day is all about, so Twitter needs to be a part of what we do.

The other problem, which really isn’t much of a problem at all, is the fact that there are a lot of sites out there to read and follow breaking news on. We aren’t the only Sabres blog out there and we are far from the best, so we wanted to find a way to bring everyone together in one place and share information (and requisite snark).

So we did.

The Goose’s Roost and another dozen or so sites out there in the Buffalo Blogosphere are coming together to live blog together: a Mega Live Blog for Deadline Day and you’re invited. Starting at 10am Wednesday morning and going until the final trade is announced well after 4pm, we’ll be here talking about Darcy Regier and the rest of the league.

We’re really hoping you stop by for a bit and chat, we think it will be a lot of fun. If you’d like to host the Cover it Live chat on your site, or even if you want to help us out a bit throughout the day shoot us an email.

Get ready guys, tomorrow is going to be very, very interesting.

Live From Buffalo

This photo isn’t from last night, but I can’t find any good images of Hecht’s shootout winner against Martin Brodeur. In fact, this may serve as proof that it probably didn’t happen. We may have to break this down like the Zapruder film just to make sure Hecht actually made Marty Brodeur look that bad, or if he did it to himself.

Either way, we’ll have something more concrete about last night’s game later on, but since we’re a few games into our BfloBlog/TGR live blogs I wanted to see what you guys thought of them. The turnout has been pretty solid, and so for those who have shown up… what do you think?

Also, if you haven’t participated in one or have no idea what I’m talking about, well, why not? Join us on Friday and brush up on your Cover it Live skills. We’ve been having fun running the chats, and we hope you have had fun as well.

Don Luce Open Thread: Sabres at Senators

My apologies if I end up being too brief, but I am having internet problems today for some reason…

To me, the Sabres are mishandling their roster right now.  Word from John Vogl is that Stafford is out tonight, and with their roster maxed out the Sabres are unable to recall anyone from Portland unless they make a move.  Apparently they won’t be making any moves, meaning that either Andrej Sekera or Steve Montador will be in the lineup at forward tonight.

Carrying eight defensemen on the active roster while keeping just 12 forwards will do that to you.  Yet Nathan Paetsch isn’t the one they are moving to forward tonight, so can someone explain to me why he is still on the roster?  Makes no sense to me…

As for No. 20, Don Luce was always one of my favorites.  He frequently centered a line that had Craig Ramsay at right wing, making a great defensive pairing when shorthanded or at even-strength.

Plus, he had a great ‘fro.

Luce is currently Director of Hockey Development for the Flyers, which was almost enough for me to skip over him and make it the Kai Suikkanen open thread, but I decided to give him a pass since he was the one that got canned by the Sabres.
