Mike Ramsey Open Thread: Islanders at Sabres

Was there ever a doubt?

If you were a young boy during the 1979-80 hockey season, the one thing you wanted on your team was more guys who had played for the US Olympic team.  Team USA’s victory was probably the biggest sporting event of my young life at that point, and I worshipped every one of those guys.  So when the Sabres added Ramsey to their roster after the Olympics it was like getting a brand-new favorite Sabre dropped in your lap.  Admittedly, he didn’t stay my favorite on a team with guys like Perreault, Luce, Ramsay, McKegney, Martin, Robert, Schoenfeld, Gare and Dudley.  But hey, you always like the new kid for a while, right?

All Ramsey did was go on to be (in my opinion) the greatest defenseman in Sabres history.  Yes, I will entertain arguments for Phil Housley, and certainly if he had played the majority of his career in Buffalo as Ramsey did he would hold that honor, hands down.  But Ramsey was what Buffalo is all about; show up, do your job, don’t make any mistakes, go home, and do it again tomorrow.

Third all-time in games played, Ramsey was the measure of consistency on the blueline, was rarely caught out of position, and tutored more rookie defensemen than I can count.

Besides, back in their younger days the all-mustache team of Mike Ramsey and Lindy Ruff were two of Buffalo’s most eligible bachelors who just happened to be roommates.  I can just see them hanging at the Scotch-n-Sirloin picking off the ladies two-by-two.  Probably very much like two very successful swinging Czechoslovakian brothers did back in their day…

Tim Horton Memorial Open Thread: Coyotes at Sabres

Could it have been anyone else?  Well, technically, it could have been Jim Watson – the only other Sabre in history to wear No. 2.  But you all knew it would be Tim Horton.

Honestly, niether player who wore No. 2 had any real influence over me when I was a kid.  Watson, who scored the first goal in Sabres history, played from 1970-1972.  Horton also played just two seasons in Buffalo; the full year in 1972-73, and part of the 1973-74 season, during which he died in a car accident in February.

You can read about his life and career here, but what always impressed me was that he was named the team MVP after the ‘72-73 season at the age of 43.

My Dad was a big Tim Horton fan, and unfortunately for me he compared every Sabres defenseman to him.  That means I grew up thinking that every Sabres defenseman, with the possible exception of Jim Schoenfeld, sucked.

And yes, Horton started the chain of coffee shops in Hamilton, Ontario in 1964.

Week Four Open Thread: Bills at Dolphins

I really need to get my act together and coordinate these things with Goose’s Roost and the rest of WNYMedia.

As far as I know, this is the only WNYMedia open thread for the game…sorry if I am duplicating someone else’s efforts.
