Jason Pominvile and Nathan Gerbe scored in a shootout and Ryan Miller made 27 saves as the Buffalo Sabres snapped a 12-game losing streak on the road with a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.
Pominville ripped a shot over the glove of Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur on the Sabres’ third and possibly final shootout attempt to tie things at 1-all.
Miller, who had given up a goal to Ilya Kovalchuk on the Devils’ first shootout try, made a pad save on rookie Adam Henrique on New Jersey’s fourth attempt and Gerbe gave Buffalo its first road win since Dec. 3 by beating Brodeur.
Defenseman Jordan Leopold scored a fluke first-period goal for Buffalo.
Patrik Elias tied it in the second period with a power-play goal.
All of Buffalo’s losses during the 12-game road skid were in regulation.
Kovalchuk scored on a snap shot on the first shootout attempt, but Miller stopped Zach Parise and Elias to give Pominville a chance to extend it.
The Devils had the first three shots in the overtime and each one was a quality scoring chance. Miller stopped Kovalchuk on a 2-on-1 just 25 seconds into the five-minute session and Henrique 15 seconds later. He also stopped Parise sweeping in from the right side with 90 seconds to go.
There weren’t a lot of shots in the third period but both goaltenders had to make some tough saves.
Brodeur stopped a point shot by Leopold and a rebound in front by Ville Leino in the final 30 seconds.
Henrique, who was stopped in close by Miller with 14:14 left in regulation, had a shot hit off the goalpost with 3:40 to go. Miller also got a piece of a shot in close by Jacob Josefson with 8:28 to go, with Leopold pulling it under him after it got through and inched toward the net.
Brodeur’s best saves came on consecutive point shots by defensemen Tyler Myers and Andrej Sekera with 12 minutes left in the third period.
Buffalo took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Gerbe ripped a shot from the top of the left circle that missed the net. The puck hit the glass behind the net and landed in the right edge of the crease for an easy tap-in by Leopold. It was his eighth of the season and his first in 10 games.
New Jersey tied the score midway through the second period on the second of two straight penalties against Derek Roy. Elias sent the puck to the right point for a one-timer by Kurtis Foster. Parise retrieved the rebound about 10 feet in front of the net and backhanded a pass to Elias in the right circle. Miller got his glove on the shot but it slid into the corner. It was Elias’ 18th goal and team-high seventh with the extra skater.
Buffalo was limited to three shots in the second period and nine in the first 40 minutes.
Miller kept them tied going to the third period making a pad save on recently acquired Alexei Ponikarovsky after the left wing was set up in front with 1:40 left in the period. Lindy Ruff immediately called a time out.
