Nathan Gerbe scored in the fourth round of the shootout as the Buffalo Sabres snapped a franchise-record 12-game road losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
Ilya Kovalchuk scored in the first round of the shootout for the Devils and captain Jason Pominville kept the Sabres alive in the third. Following an Adam Henrique miss, Gerbe’s wrist shot sailed over Martin Brodeur’s right pad for the winner.
Buffalo’s Jordan Leopold scored his eighth of the season while Ryan Miller stopped 27 shots. Patrik Elias tallied in regulation for New Jersey, which has dropped three in a row.
Leopold opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game. The Sabres broke out on a 3-on-2 when Leopold laid it off to Gerbe, who fired a shot that ricocheted off the boards behind the net. Leopold was there to retrieve the puck and score from the doorstep.
