It is no secret that WNY has suffered from economic repression, an eroding tax base and high rates of unemployment since the downturn of the steel and automobile industries. At a time when jobs that pay living wages can be difficult to find, a new study, Community Organizing As Job Creator: An Investment That Works For All, found that community organizing resulted in the creation of more than 600,000 quality jobs and over $60 billion toward training and employment nation-wide between 2008 and 2011, benefiting families historically left out of economic development opportunities available in their own communities.
Like many other “rustbelt” locales, Western New York needs a sustainable and equitable plan to rekindle the fire of prosperity that characterized our region in its glory days. Recognizing this, Niagara Organizing Alliance for Hope (NOAH) and VOICE-Buffalo, both members of the Gamaliel Foundation’s international network of faith-based community organizing efforts, will kick off their three-year “Fire of Faith: Rekindling Our Congregations, Rekindling Our Economy, Rekindling our Democracy” campaign at their upcoming Annual Public meetings to be held in Niagara Falls and Buffalo on Sunday, October 28th at 3pm. This campaign seeks to move 1 million people nation-wide into living-wage jobs by 2015.
We welcome you to join with hundreds of your fellow community members to bring the “Fire of Faith” here to Western New York and rekindle the prosperity of our bountiful region. Contact NOAH at 716-285-3590 or VOICE-Buffalo at 716-842-6571 for more information or to RSVP for these events.
