Neither snow nor cold, nor last minute holiday hustle kept the Resistance Revelers from their appointed rounds. The Revelers, whose ranks were filled by local activist groups and labor organizations, brought their #GOPTaxScam message to holiday shoppers along Transit Road. They initially carried Burma Shave-style sequenced signs.
The organizers were delighted with the turnout of around 100. “We were concerned that the weather would deter people, but their outrage at Collins’ support for the tax bill was a strong motivator”, said organizer Kathy Pace.
The #GOPTaxScam fever was real. Participants, who were stationed on both sides of Transit from Main Street to Gigi’s Fitness Supplies, braved cold, snow, and muscle fatigue to hold up their signs as drivers honked in appreciation.
The signs questioned Representative Chris Collins’ aggressive support for legislation which will benefit the rich and ultimately raise taxes for the middle class. The Bill will drain New York resources into States that don’t provide basic services to their citizens. Unlike Collins, the majority of New York Republican House Members voted against the bill because they are concerned about it’s impact on their districts.
The Resistance Revelers capped off their event with some alt-holiday caroling that spoofed the Congressman and his close ally, President Donald Trump. Their infectious spirit brought smiles to passers-by, who saw that the activists were much like their friends and neighbors.
The event was organized by Citizens Against Collins, StandUp WNY, Sister District for WNY (a NYPAN Chapter), Western New York Council on Occupational Safety and Health (WNYCOSH), We The People, the Working Families Party, Western New York Peace Center, Stronger Together WNY, ActBuffalo, Young Black Citizens of WNY, Liberty Union Progressives, 1199 and CWA. Governor Andrew Cuomo had nothing to do with it. 😉
