The NHL is an intriguing league for many reasons, one of which is particularly amusing – salaries. Some years ago, there was a loophole in the NHL system which allowed players to be paid more than they would normally receive. This loophole is now closed, but players still get paid a lot of money.

Naturally, when you are running on ice at 25 mph, you will certainly demand a big salary. But do you know exactly how much NHL players get paid? Well, we have done our research on bookmakers, and we now present you with today’s highest paid NHL players.

 

Jonathan Toews

 

Currently, Canadian professional ice hockey player Jonathan Bryan Toews is one of the highest paid NHL players. The center serves as captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. Interestingly, Jonathan tributed back in 2007.

Today, Chicago Blackhawks’ captain earns $13.8 million a year – the same amount as Patrick Kane. Incidentally, in July 2014, both players signed $84 million contracts that last eight years. Both deals introduced the highest annual salary in the NHL.

 

Patrick Kane

 

Born November 19, 1988, Patrick Timothy Kane II is a professional ice hockey player who shares the first place for the highest paid NHL players with Jonathan Toews. The American plays as a right winder for the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL. The Blackhawks chose Kane with the first overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. What is more, the professional ice hockey player acted as a US representative at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.

Patrick Kane currently earns $13.8 million a year, just like his colleague Jonathan. Furthermore, he and his colleague have signed similar contracts with Chicago Blackhawks back in 2014.

 

Sidney Crosby

 

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, born August 7, 1987, is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Sid the Kid was selected by the Penguins during the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. What is more, he is thought to be one of the best hockey players of all time.

Sid the Kid plays as a center and is one of the last NHL players to take advantage of the loophole we mentioned earlier – he managed to sign a $104.4 million 12-year contract. When the contract expires, Sidney will be 38 years old. At present, the Kid’s annual salary amounts to $10 million.

 

Anže Kopitar

 

Anže Kopitar is a professional ice hockey player from Slovenia. Born August 24, 1987, the player made his tribute back in 2006. At present, Kopitar currently as center of the Los Angeles Kings, part of the NHL. By the way, Kopitar is the first Slovenian to play in the NHL.

In 2016, Anže Kopitar signed a 8 year $80 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings. This season, Kopitar will earn a base salary of $12 million.

 

Alexander Ovechkin

 

Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin is a 33-year-old Russian professional ice hockey player. Ovi plays as a left wing and he is the captain of the Washington Capitals of the NHL. To many, The Great Eight is among the best modern NHL players.

From 2001 until 2005, Ovechkin played for HC Dynamo Moscow, part of the Russian Superleague. Curiously, his 13-year $124 million contract is still the richest in NHL history. Nowadays, Ovi earns $10 million a year.

 

Shea Weber

 

Alternative captain for the Montreal Canadiens Shea Michael Weber is considered one of NHL’s most successful players. Weber plays as a defenceman and is an NHL All-Star and even a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Weber signed a massive 14-year $110 million contract with the Predators back in 2012, but last year he was later traded to Montreal in exchange for Subban, who comes next in our list.

 

P.K. Subban

 

Pernell-Karl Sylvester is a Canadian professional ice hockey player, who currently plays for the Nashville Predators of the NHL. Subban plays as a defenceman and has won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenceman. What is more, the same year he and Kris Letang became the leading scorers among all NHL defenceman. On top of all, Subban has participated in 2 All-Star games over the past 8 seasons.

Subban was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. 7 years later, he signed an eight-year $72 million contract with the Canadiens. At present, the professional ice hockey player earns an annual salary amounting to $9 million.

Subban was traded to the Nashville Predators, but he is still a sought player, despite having moved to the smaller market. His sponsors include Gatorade, Listerine, Samsung, as well as Bridgestone.
